Chapter 7 - Writing's On The Wall

The rest of the week had been quiet, and boring.

The next day after the hostage takeover, Jazz, Strongarm, and Kiki were all brought in one by one into the interrogation room, explaining their side of the story on what went down that early Monday afternoon. They each explained their point of view on how the plan went down, what the criminal looked like, and were asked to describe the tattoo seen on the man's arm.

When Kiki's interview was over, she had tried to ask Prowl what the insignia mean't, as well as the term, "Decepticons", recalling the criminal screaming it before his suicide.

Prowl simply replied with, "It's classified," and left the room.

Kiki thought it was a strange answer, but after some thought, she assumed that she must not be in a higher rank to be told this "classified" information.

As the rest of the week dragged on into Friday afternoon, other than patrolling with Strongarm and handing out the occasionally parking ticket, nothing else majorly serious has happened since Kiki's first day.

When Mila heard what happened, she was terrified for her new friend. She and Kiki chatted on the phone until 2:00am Tuesday night. After that she slowly calmed down when she learned Kiki was unharmed. She especially got back into her teasing self when Kiki told her that Bumblebee had saved her life again.

And speaking off...

Bumblebee had taken Doctor Knockout's advice and had taken the rest of the week off to let his shoulder wound heal.

Kiki had to admit, she really did miss the guy. After all, he saved her life! Twice! Despite their limited interactions, she had hoped the two of them were at least getting along. The two of them seemed to work well together at the time, under pressure anyways.

She wanted to try and somehow reach out to him, find out if he was okay. She thought about asking Jazz or Strongarm for his number, but she didn't to come off as being creepy or needy.

Strongarm dropped Kiki back at her place after their shift was over. The ginger haired girl entered her home after waving goodbye at her partner as Strongarm drove down the road. Kiki tossed her backpack to the side, walking into the fridge and pulling out a water bottle before plopping herself on the couch.

While the week was boring and slow, it was still exhausting, especially in the California heat.

As she took a sip of her drink, her phone started vibrating in her pocket. She pulled it out as the ringtone echoed across the room. The caller ID read "Unknown" on the black screen. Being curious, Kiki tapped the green button and brought the phone up to her right ear.

"Hello?"

"Kiki?" spoke a masculine voice, "It's be, Bumblebee."

Kiki's eyes widened with surprise as she spit tick the water out of her mouth, the liquid splatting all over the coffee table as she coughed. "Bumblebee?!"

"Yes?" He replied with uncertainty. "Did I call at a bad time?"

"Huh? Uh, no, no, everything is, uh--" Kiki scrambled to her feet, reaching over as she grabbed a paper towel from the counter and frantically cleaned the coffee table before collapsing to her knees, breathing in before speaking again. "Fine! Everything's fine!"

He chuckled quietly, sensing the slight panic in her voice. "Sorry if I startled you."

"No, it's fine, really!" She assured him. "I just, wasn't really expecting your call..."

"Right, well, Mila got in touch with me yesterday to check in on me," He explained. "And as we talked, she mentioned that you were worried about me."

Kiki's body froze. She could feel her throat squeezing tighter and tighter as she tried to speak. "She... said that? I mean, she didn't lie or anything, she was telling the truth!"

Bumblebee chuckled again, a little louder this time. "Kiki, calm down. Take a deep breath," Kiki did as ordered, "Now let it out," She exhaled, slouching back against the love seat chair in her living room. "Better?"

"A lot," she breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks. Is that three I owe you now?"

"It could be," He teased in reply. Kiki could literally hear the grin on his face!

Kiki picked herself up, moving back to sit on the chair behind her as she pulled her knees up to her chest. "So, how are you? Is your shoulder doing okay?"

"I'm doing a lot better actually," he answered. "The wound has really started to come down now, I took the bandages off finally this morning."

"That's good! I'm glad to hear you're feeling better," Kiki replied with a soft smile.

"Thank you Kiki, and I appreciate the fact that you were actually worried about me," he stated. "You're a good friend."

Kiki's eyes sparkled with delight as she swore her heart skipped a beat after hearing those words. "You... consider me your friend?"

"Of course," he replied. "The two of us seem to be getting along well, yes?"

"I, suppose so, yes," Kiki agreed. "I just wasn't sure, considering we've only really known each other for like, 2 days, and our conversations don't really last that long."

"Hmm, then perhaps it's time we change that." Bumblebee pondered.

"What do you mean?" Kiki sat up from her chair, her heart beating just a bit faster this time.

"When me and Mila were talking, she also added that you told her that you wanted to do something for me when I got better, correct?" He recalled.

Kiki nodded her head. "Yes, I did say that."

What else had Mila said to him? Kiki wondered.

"Well, this is kind of last minute, but Commissioner Magnus is throwing this dinner party at the Grand Alpha Hotel tonight, and my original plus one had to cancel due to some... circumstances," Bumblebee explained. "Would you like to go with me?"

Silence filled the room. Kiki's heart was pounding so hard she swore it could jump right out of her chest and smack her right in the face. Was... was Bumblebee asking her out?!

Kiki's mouth gaped open, nearly dropping her phone as she let out a quiet squeak of joy, shaking her hands. She quickly scrambled to retrieve her phone, composing herself before bringing it back up to her ear.

Try to remain calm. It's mostly likely just asking you to go as a friend. Jazz mentioned earlier that he might be ready for another relationship just yet, so for now, play it safe.

"I'd love to go!" She beamed.

"Wow, uh, great!" Bumblebee spoke with a slight relief. "So the party starts at 8, but I need to be there early to meet some people, but I'll meet you down in the lobby to let you in."

"Oh, okay." Kiki replied with understanding.

"I'll see you at 8." he spoke.

"8 O'Clock!" She smiled. "Bye!"

*******

Bumblebee say on the sofa in the living room of his apartment. He hung up the phone, setting it down to the side as he got up from his seat.

"I made the call," he spoke. "Now are you really sure you don't want to go?"

"I'm very sure," his room-mate replied, the sound of his voice coming from the bathroom.

"There's no rule that says we can't just go as friends," Bumblebee added, turning his head to face the bathroom door.

"Bumblebee," the bathroom door opened, a red haired masculine figure stepped out wearing a white t-shirt with a black vest over top, and jeans. "It's fine. Society standards states it would be a little awkward if the two of us, a recently broken up pair, went together."

"Okay, fine, we'll do it your way." The platinum blonde replied with a slight tease.

"Did she say yes?" His room-mate asked.

"Yes, she did." Bumblebee answered, a small smile forming on his face.

"Good for you! She'll make a great date," he proclaimed, making his way into the kitchen.

"It's not a date, Knockout, we're just going as friends." Bumblebee defended.

"You say that now," Knockout laughed with a grin. "Hurry up and get going, I got your tux pressed this morning."

*******

When Bumblebee hung up the phone, Kiki did two things. First, she quickly added his name and number to her contact list. Secondly, she bolted into her room, changing out of her uniform into a light t-shirt and jeans before running back into her living room, slipping her boots on and ran out of the house.

She took off down the street, jogging up towards Mila's house as she knocked on her friends door. Kiki didn't even know if Mila was home or not. She didn't know her friend's work schedule! Luckily the dark curly haired woman opened her front door just as Kiki dropped to her knees, clasping her hands together.

"I need your help!" She begged. "Bumblebee asked me to go to the Commisioner's Dinner Party with him tonight, and I have nothing to wear!"

Mila gasped loudly as she helped her friend to her feet. "Girl, get in here! Now!"

Mila literally dragged her friend into her house, shutting the door behind her as she grabbed her arm and guided her through the living space of the housing unit.

"Where are we going?" Kiki asked with a hint of concern.

"You'll see." Mila smirked.

Mila led the ginger haired girl downstairs to the basement. She literally kicked the door open, flicking on the lights to reveal a design studio! Racks of clothes and dresses were on one side of the room while on the other was a computer desk and a drawing board station, littered with pencils, pens, rulers, everything!

"Is this your studio?" Kiki asked, completely speechless.

"I come down here to work on my designs while I'm off the clock," Mila explained, pulling out one of the racks. "Now, let's see, we need something that says formal dinner party."

After rummaging through the various options, Mila shouted a, "Ah, ha!" pulling out a gorgeous Red Wine Mika Dress.

Kiki gasped at the sight of it, grasping it gently as she felt the silk with her fingers. "Mila, this is beautiful! A-Are you sure it's okay for me to wear this?"

"Oh please darling, of course it's okay! This is one of many copies, it'll be fine." She assured her.

"Okay, then," A small smirk sprung up on Kiki's face as she scanned the room before looking over at her friend. "You wouldn't happen to have matching shoes, do you?"

"Don't be ridiculous," Mila spoke smugly before a wide smile escaped her lips as she bent down to the side, pulling out a pair of silver 3 inch heel shoes. "Of course I do! Oh you're going to look wonderful on your date!"

"Mila, it's not a date!" Kiki quickly defended.

"That's what you say now," Mila sang with a tease.

*******

The taxi pulled up to the hotel at 8 O'Clock sharp. This area of downtown was buzzing with life, especially with the party going on. The bell hop scampered over, opening the passenger door and assisting Kiki out of the vehicle.

"Welcome Miss," he greeted.

"Thank you," She smiled.

She payed the driver before making her way up the front steps and into the lobby of the hotel. The place looked magnificent! It looked like one of those hotels straight out of the spy movies she saw as a kid. Near the elevator's there was a security check point that the guests had to go through.

Kiki tensed a little. They wouldn't let her in without a ticket would they? Even if she was Bumblebee's plus one.

Kiki quickly checked herself over in a near by mirror. Mila was a miracle worker! Not only did she help pick out the dress and shoes, but she also did her hair too! There was more volume to it, and it was all puffy and fluffy. Kiki didn't want to go too overboard with the make-up so she applied a simple stroke of lip gloss and a dark shade of eye liner to match the dress.

Once she was satisfied, Kiki turned and began making her way to the security check point. With each passing step she took, she grew more and more nervous, her stomach tying in knots. When it was finally her turn, she breathed a sigh of relief when the elevator light dinged and the doors open, a very familiar man stepping out and smiling when he spotted her.

"Kiki!"

He wore the classic black tuxedo with a white dress shirt and and black tie. She had to admit, he looked pretty dang fine in that tux.

"It's okay, she's my plus one," he spoke up, patting the security guard on the shoulder. The guard let the girl pass as Bumblebee gently placed a hand on her back, guiding her by the group of people chattering and back into the elevator before it closed. "You made it."

"Yeah, thank you again for inviting me."

"It was my pleasure," Bumblebee replied with a smile. It quickly vanished as coughed, reaching his hand up as he used his index finger to pull on his tie. "I hate wearing this things sometimes."

"Not a tie fan?" Kiki asked him as he pushed a button on the elevator wall, the contraption beginning to move upward.

"When it comes to stuff like this, I usually dress in something slightly more, casual," he explained. "Magnus' orders."

It looked like he was really starting to struggle with this thing. Kiki reached up, lightly tapping him to catch his attention. "May I?"

He looked at the girl with surprise for a moment, but moved his hand away as he turned slightly to face her completely. Kiki got to work, gently loosening the strap of the tie before taking the tip in one hand and carefully pushing it back up to the cuffs of his neck.

She was so focused on the tie, she was complexity obviously to the man staring at her.

"You look... Beautiful tonight." He complimented.

Kiki's hand slowed her pace as she quickly processed the words spoken to her. A small blush formed on her cheeks, couldn't help but form a wide smile on her face as she ducked her head to the side. "Oh, well... Thank you."

He... told her she was beautiful. Kiki hadn't heard someone, let alone a man she liked, call her that for a long while now. It felt strange, yet so right at the same time.

What if Mila's right? What if this is more than just two friends attending a work party? What if this actually turns out to be a date? But then again, if it was, while Kiki would have been delighted, wouldn't Bumblebee have said something? After Jazz did mention that he told the lieutenant that she liked him, but she had no idea whether he took the news seriously or not.

Play it safe, she thought, don't mention anything.

After a moments pause, Kiki finished with the tie, taking a step back.

"How's that feel?" She asked him.

"Much better, thanks Kiki." He smiled in reply.

"Hey," she shrugged. "What are friends for, right?"

The elevator chimed and the doors opened. The pair exited the elevator and made their way down the hall, passing under an arch and entering the hotel's main ballroom.

The place was huge! There was a dance floor at the centre of the room, a stage filled with musicians at the very back, and donning tables were placing all around in a circle. There were dozens upon dozens of people inside already.

"Lieutenant Bumblebee," Commissioner Magnus approached the pair. "Thank you for attending."

"And miss out on the party of a lifetime?" Bumblebee replied.

"Humorous," he commented before turning his gaze towards Kiki. "Recruit, I didn't get the chance to thank you for saving my son, earlier this week."

"I just did what anyone else would have done, sir," The ginger haired girl replied, the two of them shaking hands.

Magnus made the tiniest of smiles as he nodded. "You two enjoy yourselves, I have other guests to see to."

"Have a good night Commisioner," Bumblebee waved farewell as the tall man walked away. Once he was gone, he glanced over at Kiki. "Wow. You actually made him smile."

"He doesn't smile?" Kiki rose a brow at the brown skinned man.

"Well if he does, he doesn't often," Bumblebee replied. "Come on, let's do some exploring."

Bumblebee showed Kiki around the room, introducing her to other guests attending the party before they helped themselves to the food that was being served at the buffet table. By the time they finished eating, it was around 10:30pm and they were conversing among themselves at a table near the dance floor at the centre of the room.

"Sorry this hasn't been the most exciting party in the world," Bumblebee apologized.

"No, no, it's not that bad," Kiki assured the man. "Look at the positives; There might not be that many people we know here, but the food is fantastic, and the music is pretty amazing..."

"Music..." Bumblebee spoke softly.

The current song that was playing died out, the guests who were on the dance floor applauding the musicians. As they did so, a woman dressed in a white dress made her way up on stage, stepping up to the microphone.

"This is the last song for the night, ladies and gentlemen. Please enjoy Sam Smith's Writing's On The Wall."

The song began to play as Bumblebee suddenly sat up from his chair. He stepped over towards Kiki, extending his hand towards her.

"May I have this dance?"

Kiki gasped, covering her mouth with her finger tips. He just asked her dance... with him! Kiki blushed again as she rubbed the back of her neck.

"Oh, I don't know, I haven't danced with a guy since---" She suddenly froze, her eyes widening.

"Since, what?" Bumblebee repeated with confusion.

******

Kiki's memory flashed to her Police Academy formal dance. She was dancing with a man, the once love of her life. The two of them were enjoying themselves. Until they got back to Kiki's place...

"SHUT UP!" The man shouted as he slapped Kiki in the face, knocking her to the ground.

******

Kiki furiously shrugged the thought out of her head. No, not now. Don't think about him right now. Maybe this could be a good thing. This could be the boost she need for her fresh start here in Crystal City. Of all of the guys that was asking her to dance, it was her crush!

"Kiki? Are you alright?" He asked with concern, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. Kiki could feel the mixture of leather and metal coming from it. "If you don't want to, we don't have to..."

Kiki shook her head, meeting Bumblebee's gaze. "I'm alright,"

"Are you sure?" He asked for confirmation.

She nodded in reply, giving the man a soft smile. "I think this dance is exactly what I need."

Bumblebee smiled back, removing his hand from her shoulder as he held it out towards her. She took it as the man helped her to her feet, and the pair made their way to the dance floor. The two got into position, the two holding hands on Kiki's left as she placed her right hand on his shoulder, and Bumblebee placed his left hand on Kiki's back.

"Fair warning, I'm a little rusty." Bumblebee cautioned.

"You and me both," Kiki assured with a quiet laugh.

The two smiled as they began to dance, the 2nd section of the first verse echoing across the room.

"I'm prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I'm gonna make it through the day
Then there's no more use in running
This is something I gotta face."

Kiki glanced down at her feet for a quick moment, hoping she was doing the correct steps before returning her gaze to her partner.

"Nervous?" He asked.

"A little," She answered truthfully.

"Don't look at your feet, take a deep breath, and focus on me, okay?" He suggested.

"Okay," She nodded with a small smile as they continued to dance.

"If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all..."

Kiki couldn't believe what she was doing. She was dancing with Bumblebee, her crush, and quite possibly the man of dreams! When she first saw him, Kiki knew he was attractive. But she felt like if she only liked him for his looks, that would feel completely wrong to her. But now that she was slowly but surely starting to get to know the man, Kiki pushed those regretting thoughts to the side. She had now come to the conclusion that Bumblebee was her dream guy.

During her thoughts however, she misplaced her footing and suddenly fell back with a yelp. She slammed her eyes shut, preparing for the impact. Only it never came. She slowly opened her eyes, meeting Bumblebee's gaze as their faces were inches apart from each other. Bumblebee had caught the girl in a tipping position.

"Sorry," She apologized. Kiki couldn't help but blush. "I guess I'm a bit of a klutz."

"It's alright," He assured her with a smile as his hand slowly and gently, snaked down her back to her waist for better support. "I've got you."

"Cause the writing's on the wall."
