Chapter 4 - Patrol

Kiki and Strongarm were now patrolling the streets of downtown Crown City. Now with her added arsenal of the bullet proof vest and utility belt, Kiki's uniform was finally complete.

She cracked her knuckles, a nervous habit she developed as a child. Just mere hours ago, she had completely embarrassed herself in front of Bumblebee. Hey may have not acted like it, but Kiki assumed that the man thought she must have come off as a complete and utter weirdo.

Patrolling with Strongarm has helped taken her mind off of the incident, for the most part anyway. It still rattled in the back of her mind. Other than giving out the occasional parking ticket, there wasn't much going on in the city today. But then again, what can you expect on your first day at work? Especially if you're working in the police department?

"Are you feeling alright, Kiki?"

The girl snapped out of her train of thought, looking over at Strongarm who stood beside her, holding a pair of hot dogs in her hands. The two of them were by the park, taking a quick lunch break before going back out in the field.

"You seem quiet."

"I'm okay, Strongarm," Kiki assured her partner. "I'm probably just hungry."

"Good thing I brought these then," Strongarm smiled, handing her a hot dog. "You're off to a great start so far."

Kiki gave the officer an odd look as she took a bite into her lunch. "Really?"

"Sure, it's not the greatest thing in the world," the white haired woman reasoned. "But it is important."

"What? Giving people tickets and towing their cars so other people can get the chance to park?" I teased. "Instead of everyone else hogging all the spots for themselves?"

"It's more interesting when you put it like that!" Strongarm chuckled, taking a bite out of her hot dog.

The two of them continued to eat their lunch in silence for a few seconds, looking around the scenery of the park for any suspicious looking activity, before Strongarm turned her head back towards Kiki.

"It's about Bumblebee, isn't it?"

Kiki froze mid-bite as her eyeballs glanced over to the side. "Hmm?"

"The reason why you're so quiet," she repeated. "It had something to do with Bumblebee?"

Kiki bit her hot dog, swallowing it before she cleared her throat, rubbing the back of her neck with her free hand. "How did you know?"

"It took me a while to put two and two together," Strongarm spoke. "but I had a feeling, that's all."

"Well... yeah." Kiki admitted, shuffling in her spot.

"Why is that?" Strongarm questioned. "If you don't mind me asking."

Kiki's face started to heat up a bit. Should she tell her? I mean, she's only known Strongarm for a few hours and she's already slowly starting to figure it out. I mean, she had only known Mila for about 5 minutes before she figured out her crush on the guy, so how was this any different?

But Kiki didn't want this to turn into one of those situations where everyone knew she had a crush on the guy, and Bumblebee would be the only one who didn't know, and the whole situation would just be, well, a little too awkward for her to handle.

Kiki sucked in her gut, taking a breath before speaking up. "The thing is... I guess the whole, Bumblebee standing up for me back at the station, kind of caught me off guard."

"How come?" Strongarm asked.

The two of them proceeded to walk and talk down a pathway through the park as they continued to eat their lunch.

"Back at my Academy, we were taught this thing where, 'You mess up, it's on you. Don't expect others to help you.' That sort of thing." Kiki explained.

It wasn't technically a lie. She did learn that during her training. The ginger haired girl just wan't comfortable talking about her feelings at the moment.

Strongarm hummed at the motto, her eyebrows narrowing, deep in thought. She finally rose her head, looking over at her partner. "I don't think you have to worry too much about that."

Kiki raised a brow at the woman, signalling her to continue.

"What I mean is, that may be the way you handle things back in Jasper. But here in Crown City, we do things differently. We look out for each other here. We're like a big family, the CCPD." She explained.

"That's... kind of sweet," Kiki commented. "The heart warming kind."

"Bumblebee is a good guy, Kiki," Strongarm replied. "He's the type of guy who always looks out for his friends, no matter what gets in his way."

"I don't even remember if I thanked him for standing up for me against Prowl," Kiki realized, rubbing her eye lids in frustration. "He must think I'm a stuck up weirdo..."

"I have a feeling he could tell that you were grateful. As for Prowl, he's fine. One of those tough love kinds of cops," Strongarm explained. "But back to Bumblebee; I think the two of you will get along fine."

"You really think so?" Kiki perked up, looking at Strongarm with surprise.

The officer nodded in reply with a small smile, "Yeah," She spoke, finishing her hot dog. "You really impressed him with your save yesterday. He couldn't stop talking about it for the rest of his shift."

"He... talked about me?" Kiki murmured, her eyes widening.

Kiki couldn't believe what she was hearing. Bumblebee? Talking about her? Impressed?!

Strongarm couldn't help but chuckle at the ginger haired girl. "Like I said, Bumblebee is warming up to you. Don't push him away that easily."

After taking in those words, Kiki looked back at Strongarm, smiling at her. "You know what? You're probably right. Thanks for the advice."

"Not a problem, recruit." Strongarm winked.

The two of them laughed it off as Kiki finished her hot dog, tossing the wrapping paper into a near by garbage bin as the two of them continued out on their patrol. Just as they were about to leave the park, a sleek figure breezed by the pair on a skateboard.

"Whoa, watch it!" Kiki yelped.

"Yeah-hoo!" The skateboarder cheered, cruising down the path. From here it looked like he wore a red baseball cap with a matching sweater. He wore blue jeans with holes in the, and black converse sneakers.

"Not this punk again..." Strongarm muttered with a growl.

"You know him?" Kiki questioned, seeming confused.

"His name is Sideswipe, and despite Bumblebee's claims about him not being dangerous," she explained with a sigh. "He can cause quite the mess."

"Should we stop him, or---" Kiki strained her voice, motioning her hand in a circle waiting for clarification from her partner.

"He nearly hit us, but the only thing we can really give him is a warning," Strongarm answered. "But the minute he steps out of line, I'm going in after him."

Strongarm tensed as her eyes fixed on Sideswipe, watching him like a hawk. He didn't seem young, maybe two or three years younger than the cadet. Kiki had to admit, the look on her partners face was quite amusing. She could tell that the two of them have their history, what exactly it contained, she had no idea.

Kiki leaned against a bench, focusing her attention on the young punk as well. She had to admit, he did have some pretty decent moves.

She watched him as he jumped over a garbage bin, just tapping the edge as he came down and the entire bin tipped over, a pile of trash scattering all over the ground.

"That's it," Strongarm sprang. "He's going down!"

She got a running start as Kiki leaped over the bench, jogging to catch up to her partner.

"Sideswipe! Pull over!" Strongarm called.

Her cries caught the young male's attention as he glanced behind him. He pushed the heel of his back foot down, performing a quick wheelie as the board came to a halt, stopping in the middle of the path. He waited impatiently for the two young woman to catch up to him, tapping his fingers against the board.

"Is there a problem, Cadet Strongarm?" He asked with a tease.

"That's officer Strongarm to you." She corrected, crossing her arms.

"Why'd you stop me?" He asked.

Strongarm stepped to the side, displaying the crime he had committed with the garbage bin. "Destruction of property, and littering."

"But it's not my litter," he stated, raising a finger. "So you can't get me on that."

"Fine, but there is still the fine of destruction of property," She explained. "Do you have the money or not?"

"Um," he reached into his pockets, pulling them inside out. "Left it in my other pants?"

"Let me guess, you used it all on hair gel?" Strongarm questioned with a smirk.

"Hardly! I can get the good stuff for free from my brother's place," Sideswipe waved his hand in defense, and it was only then did he get a glance at Kiki. "Who's the nooby?"

"My new partner," Strongarm answered. "She's our newest recruit."

Sideswipe looked over at Kiki again, straightening his posture. "Got a name?"

"Now's not the time Sideswipe," Strongarm stepped in. "Are you going to pay the fine or--"

"Kiki," the ginger haired girl spoke up. "The name is Kiki."

Her voice seemed to catch the two of them by surprise.

"So tell me, Kiki," Sideswipe grinned as he stepped forward. "Are you sure it's legal for someone as cute as you to be working in the PD?"

Strongarm and Kiki froze in their places. Was Sideswipe... Flirting with her?!

Now she understood why Strongarm didn't take quite the liking to Sideswipe. Don't misunderstand, Kiki did find Sideswipe a little cute, but he wasn't Bumblebee cute.

Wait... Did she seriously just think that?

She shook away the thought, catching Sideswipe's eye. "Are you... Flirting with me?"

"Maybe," he answered, raising a brow at the girl.

"I'm not hearing a no, right Strongarm?" She asked, looking over at the cadet.

"Right..." Strongarm spoke slowly, looking confused.

"Sideswipe, can you do something for me?" She reached to him, and without warning, spun him around and pinned his arms to his back.

"What the heck?!" He yelped.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, Strongarm, but I believe Sideswipe was attempting to flirt with a cop in order to get out of paying a fine." Kiki spoke.

Strongarm's face lit up suddenly as she finally caught on to Kiki's plan. Her lips formed into a grin. "Why yes, I believe he was. Sideswipe, we have no choice but to bring you in."

"Aw, crap." He cursed, hanging his head. "Sunstreaker is going to kill me..."

Just as Strongarm was pulling out a pair of handcuffs, both her and Kiki's radios went off.

"All units we have a hostage situation at Headquarters! I repeat, hostage situation at Headquarters!"

Headquarters? Hostages? That's where the Commissioner's office was!

"That's just a few blocks from here!" Kiki realized, looking over at her partner.

With a look of deep regret, Strongarm growled under her breath as she put the handcuffs back on her belt. "Kiki, you can let him go. We have more important matters to deal with."

Kiki released the punk as he fell to his knees, massaging his arms as the two cops took off running.

"Stay out of trouble!" Kiki yelled as she and Strongarm ran for her police truck.

The two of them piled in as Strongarm started the engine, the sirens blaring as the truck took off down the street.

Today was really turning out to be an interesting first day.
