Chapter 1 - Welcome
The sound of the alarm clock awoke Kiki from her slumber. The sound rang in her ears so loudly, it was like being woken up with police sirens right next to your ears. She slowly opened her eyes as she reached her hand out, tapping on the surface of her night stand as she struggled to find the clock.
Phone, nope. Tissue box, nope. Ouch! House keys.
She finally found the clock, forming her hand into a fist as she slammed on the snooze button, powering it off. Now that she had some peace and quiet, she rubbed her eyes, slowly sitting up in her bed. Even though she wore a tank top and shorts as pajamas, she always lost her battle with the warm California heat.
Which reminded her;
"Note to self, get the air conditioner fixed."
She pushed the bed sheets off of her body as she scotched over, her feet dangling from the side of the bed as she looked out the window. Her green eyes met a beautiful sun rise. She would always miss the sun rise back in Jasper, Nevada, but there was just something about this one that just seemed so pleasing to her.
Once she was done admiring the view, she finally glanced over to her clock again to check the time.
"7:00 am"
Her lips formed into a frown as she cursed, collapsing back onto her bed. Not the best time to wake up. Especially on a Sunday. But whether she liked it or not, she had to start early today and hustle. Chores needed to be done, and plenty of it.
With a huff, she pushed herself out of bed, stepping out of her tiny bedroom and turned to the right, entering the bathroom. She stripped herself down and took a quick shower to help wake herself up. When she was finished, she wrapped a towel around herself, drying off her body. Steam filled the room and it covered the entire bathroom mirror with mist. When she rubbed it off and saw her wet hair and saggy eyes, she yelped, stumbling back.
She relaxed, realizing it was her before she took a stern look at her reflection in the mirror. "We have got some serious work to do my friend."
She exited the bathroom and went back inside her room. As she did so, she nearly tripped over a box, falling forward before she caught herself by plopping down on the bed again. She breathed a sigh of relief before she glared down at the box.
Kiki had just moved to Crown City last week. She was starting her job as a Cop in the Crown City Police Department. She decided to move a week early so she could get her bearings and find her way around the city. That way she wouldn't feel embarrassed or lost on her first day on the job. She didn't start until tomorrow, so she knew she had to get her work down by tonight.
Once her hair was dry, she changed into a t-shirt and a pair of skinny jeans. She tied her ginger orange hair back into a pony tail before picking up her phone and opening the Notes app, bringing up her today list.
"1. Do laundry
2. Call repairman
3. Install Playstation 4
4. Buy a fan if repairman can't come
5. Go to the gym
6. Finish unpacking boxes!!!"
"Oh geez," she muttered. "First, I gotta eat."
She walked down the hallway and entered the kitchen/living room space of her bungalow home. She got the place for practically a steal, and the best part was it was just down the street from the beach!
She set her phone down on the counter, bringing up her music app as Selena Gomez's "Hands To Myself" quietly played in the background as Kiki made a bowl of cereal. She listened to the song, bobbing her head to the beat as she ate her breakfast.
As she did so, she opened her Gmail account to find a new email waiting for her. It was a message from her parents. They were just checking in on her like they usually do, hoping she's settling in well in her new home, and that they wished her the best of luck tomorrow on her first day of work.
Kiki smiled at the email as she quickly typed up a reply.
Now that she had her energy, she stuffed her phone in her pocket, the music was still playing as she gathered up her dirty laundry and opened up a closet door to the left side of her bedroom. She popped open the machine as she poured her clothes in the washer, powering it on as she watched the water and clothes spin around in circles for a moment before pulling her phone out, pausing the music and calling the local repairman.
... and of course they weren't open on Sundays.
"Well, I guess I'm buying the fan."
With a huff, she made her way over to her living room and worked her way through the wires and such, installing her gaming system. Once everything was plugged in, she powered it on, testing it out as she pressed the power button on the TV. The screen came to life, and the main menu appeared.
It appeared one of her friends was online.
The user was "GoodCopBadCop666".
"No thank you," Kiki muttered as she scrolled over the name and pressed the delete option.
That username belonged to an old flame of Kiki, her first romantic interest in fact. She didn't really like to talk about it. At this moment, she was not interested in thinking about it. No matter how hard she tried, somehow, in someway, there was always something that reminded her that he was actually in her life.
******
"How... how could you?!"
"SHUT UP!"
The man raised his hand and smacked the girl right in her face, knocking her to the floor. She raised her hand to her cheek. She could literally feel the heat and the redness from the attack. With tears streaming down her checks, she looked up at the man, and choked. She held her breath when she saw him walk over to her bedroom door and locked it.
"You're not going anywhere..."
"Please... don't do this!"
******
She quickly shot the negative thoughts away, not wanting to even dare to think of those memories. She turned off her game system, opening up the note app as she began to check off her list.
Now all that was left for her to do was to buy a new fan, go to the gym, and finish unpacking her boxes.
However Kiki highly doubted that she would be able to do that after her work out. She hasn't been able to hit the gym since she moved to the big city, so she had some catching up to do. All she's really done was go out for a jog every day to scoop out the city. During those times, she noticed a public gym not too far from her home. She even popped in yesterday to check it out. The manager was even kind enough to give her a tour of the joint. They had everything there! A work out room, a yoga room, sparing room, they even had a basketball court, an indoor track, and a swimming pool! Best gym ever!
When she checked out the time, it was 9:00 am.
"I have plenty of time," She grinned.
She went back into her room, unpacking some of her boxes as she got her gym stuff ready. She changed into her black and neon green loulou lemon workout uniform, which was a tank top and leggings. Kiki packed her gym bag, stuff a extra pair of clothes, a towel, her water bottle, and a extra pair of running shoes.
Once she was ready, she grabbed her phone, stuffed it in the side pocket of her bag, grabbed her keys and made her way out of the house.
The walk to the gym wasn't that long. 10 minutes, at least. It was a fairly large building, considering all that it had to offer.
She stepped through the front doors, and entered the main foyer. She wanted to work on her arm strength first, considering she's been jogging all week. She made her way up a large staircase and entered the main workout room. This place had treadmills, power bikes, punching bags, anything you could think of.
She spotted a near by bench stationed across from the punching bags that was empty. She made her way over, setting her bag down. As she was making sure she didn't forget anything, she heard a growl from her right. She looked up to see a young woman in her early twenties fidgeting around with her shoes. They appeared to be warn out.
"Seriously?" She muttered, taking them off and tossing them to the floor. "I can't use these!"
Seeming puzzled, Kiki took a step towards her. "Everything okay?"
"Hmm?" The woman glanced up at the woman, her eyes widened as she did a quick double take before fully taking in her question. "Oh! This, right, my dog ate my shoes... again."
"Oh, sorry to hear that."
"It's okay," She assured her. "You're not the one that's at fault."
An idea came to mind as she unzipped her bag, "If you'd like," She pulled out her spare pair, extending them to the woman. "You can borrow mine?"
The woman's eyes widened with shock as she rose her hands, shaking them. "Oh no, I couldn't possibly--!"
"Take them, I insist," Kiki smiled. "Besides, they're not my colour anyway."
Chuckling at the joke, the woman reached over, gently taking the shoes from Kiki's hands as she proceeded to put them on. "Well, gee, thanks, uh---?"
"Kiki," Kiki introduced herself. "My name is Kiki."
"Kiki? Never met someone with a name like that before," the woman raised a brow with curiosity as she sat up from the bench, extending her hand towards the ginger haired girl. "I'm Mila."
"Nice to meet you Mila," Kiki shock her hand in return, smiling.
Mila looked about Kiki's age, 23, if not a bit older. She had dark skin with curly black hair, wore a grey v-neck shirt with short shorts and short black knee leggings underneath.
"Are you new here? I don't think I've seen you around,"
"Yeah, well, technically I moved here like, a week ago, but I just found this place." Kiki explained.
"Oh! Well, welcome to Crown City!" Mila proclaimed. "You'll love it here, I guarantee it."
"Thanks," Kiki smiled. "Would it be awkward if I already made you my friend?"
"We may have just met, but considering you gave me free shoes," Mila shrugged with a laugh. "Why not?"
"Sweet!" Kiki cheered, fist pumping.
"So, what were you planning on doing first?" Mila asked Kiki, cracking her knuckles.
"I'm not--"
Kiki spoke, scanning the equipment around the room before she froze, spotting something. Or perhaps she should say, someone. She spotted a brown skinned male over by the punching bags just across from them, hammering away at his imaginary opponent.
She could have sworn she saw him before. That platinum hair, those blue eyes. Was he there when she toured the gym yesterday?
"Kiki?" The sound of Mila's voice snapped the girl back into reality as she shook her head, looking over at her newly made friend. "You okay? You spaced out for a second there."
"Yeah," Kiki nodded. "I'm fine. I just... who is that?" Kiki asked as she pointed her finger in the direction of the male.
The man looked to be in his late twenties, and he was insanely ripped. Perhaps Kiki was exaggerating, but his muscles looked bigger than her head! Okay, she was exaggerating, but they were pretty big. The man wore nothing but punching gloves and black sweat pants, leaving his chest bared and sweating.
"Him?" Mila followed her gaze, spotting the man. "Oh, him! That's Bee. Well, technically his name is Bumblebee, but most people call him Bee for short."
"Bumblebee? Strange name," Kiki raised a brow. "Is it symbolic or anything? You know, Sting like a bee?"
"Not to my knowledge no," Mila shook her head. "He comes in here everyday for his work out. A town favourite, real nice guy."
"You're friends with him?" The ginger haired girl asked her as they made their way over to the Body Trainer.
"We chat from time to time," She answered. "Like I said, he's a good guy. Why you ask?"
"Just wondering, is all." Kiki replied.
"You a cop or something?" Mila questioned.
"Actually, yes," Kiki smirked with a chuckle. "I start tomorrow."
"Dang, girl!" Mila exclaimed. "Going all detective on me!"
The two of them shared a good laugh about it as they continued their work out. After a few more minutes, Kiki took one last glance at the man named, Bumblebee. She watched him take off his gloves as he picked up his bag and made his way to the Men's locker room.
"Okay, my turn to play cop," Mila teased as she caught Kiki's attention. "Does the new girl like the dream boat?"
"What? I just saw the guy!" Kiki defended. "I haven't even talked to him, I'm pretty sure he doesn't even know I exist."
"Alright, alright, I'm just teasing," Mila assured the girl.
"Besides, I don't know if I'm ready for another relationship yet." Kiki frowned.
"Hmm, going through a tough break up?" Mila asked.
"Something along those lines, yeah." Kiki nodded.
Although this made Kiki wonder; Would starting a new relationship help stop thinking about her old one?
