Chapter 13

Logan, Hank and Charles had been planning their plot to free Erik for a couple of hours, and were now on their way out of the mansion. The red car sitting in the driveway was starting to pull away, but when Iris turned to look at the three men she stopped driving. She pulled the car door open and walked over to them, staring at Charles with a bitter expression.

"I just want to say to you that your comments about the research that I've been dedicating my life to for the last ten years made me feel absolutely humiliated. I've been sitting here for almost three hours wanting to go back in there and prove to you that my research isn't pointless. I've been studying mutants and mutations so closely, and I need to know if they're real and what kinds of examples I can look at. I want to know that I'm not just doing pointless research that will lead to nothing, because-"

She was cut off as Logan held up his fists and three long, boned claws slowly revealed themselves from beneath his skin. Iris gasped, her whole face lighting up.

"It's real. Oh my god. My research is real. It's been worth it."

She suddenly threw her arms around Logan in a moment of pure joy. He didn't move and waited for her to pull away. Her cheeks flushed red and she apologised.

Logan glanced at Charles for a moment and then smiled, "I'm Logan, by the way. Nice to meet someone who's so interested in mutations."

She held her hand out, "Iris Miracle."

Logan hesitated slightly as he took her hand, "I can tell you're very interested in mutations, Iris. We're about to... run some errands, and it would be great if you could help us out."

"Logan-" Charles hissed, but he ignored him.

"It might be good for your research to spend some time with mutants and see what we really get up to."

"I would love to," Iris smiled, shooting a dark look at Charles, "So where are we going?"

*

Iris was confused.

She was sitting in the back of the car beside a young man who had introduced himself as Hank, along with the mutant with claws- Logan- and the one who had told her to leave- Charles.

She had no idea why she was there. Charles hadn't even apologised to her- in fact, all he'd been doing was staring at her when he'd clearly thought she wasn't looking. It was unnerving to say the least.

She also didn't understand what the four of them were going to be doing. She had just been so ecstatic at the knowledge that there really were mutants out there that she would have jumped in the car to go anywhere. What kind of 'errands' were they planning on doing where they would need her?

Iris leant to the side and tapped Hank on the shoulder, "What exactly are we doing?"

He turned to face her, "We're just looking for someone. We need a young boy called Peter Maximoff to help us with something."

Iris nodded, "Is a he a mutant too? You know, I thought they were so rare. I didn't think that I'd ever get to meet one."

Hank's expression turned to something unreadable for a moment before he smiled, "Well, I guess you're getting the full experience now."

They pulled up outside a house, and everyone began to pile out of the car. Logan and Hank were bickering about something already, so Iris stood behind them next to Charles.

"Sorry," Charles suddenly spoke quietly, "I didn't mean to mock your research. I used to research mutations myself about ten years ago- it's a very promising subject to look at."

Iris hesitated for a moment, tucking her dark hair behind her ear, "It's okay. I shouldn't have been so forceful, I suppose. It's just something that I'm very passionate about. For some reason I... I can't seem to leave the topic alone."

Charles started to say something, but the front door of the house opened and a young woman with a face full of make up appeared in front of them, "What's he done now?"

"We just need to talk to him, Mrs. Maximoff," Charles stepped forwards. The woman nodded with a sigh, opening the door further.

"Peter! The cops are here!" She shouted as everyone stepped through the door and thanked her quietly.

The woman gestured for the four of them to make their way down the stairs into the basement, and Iris followed the three men in silence.

The room was a mess, filled with boxes of sweets and food and a ping pong table in the middle. It looked like two people were playing ping pong, but as Iris narrowed her eyes she realised that it was one young man playing it, and managing to run fast enough to the other side to play with himself. Her mouth dropped open, and she heard Logan snort at her reaction. Her cheeks flushed and she glanced down at the floor.

"What do you guys want?" The young man asked really quickly as he ran towards the sofa, "I didn't do anything. I've been here all day."

"Relax, Peter," Logan shook his head, "We're not cops."

Peter shrugged, "Of course you're not cops. If you were cops, you wouldn't be driving a rental car."

Charles glanced at Logan in confusion, "How did you know we got a rental car?"

Peter shrugged again, "I checked your registration when you were walking through the door. I also had some time to kill so I went through your rental agreements. Saw you were from out of town... are you FBI?"

Iris raised her eyebrows- she was impressed with Peter's intelligence.

Peter moved again, whizzing past Charles as he plucked his wallet from Charles' pocket.

"Hey, what's this sketchy place?" He asked, turning over the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngster's card with mild interest.

Charles snatched the wallet from his hands, "That's an old card."

Hank laughed, "Well, he's fascinating." Iris nodded in agreement.

"He's a pain in the arse," Charles muttered bitterly, and Iris gave him a sideways glance. Why was Charles so miserable? He clearly had some secrets that he was keeping- what were they?

Hank turned to Logan, "Teleporter?"

Logan shook his head with a smile, "No, he's just fast. But when I knew him, he wasn't so young."

Peter interjected, "Young? You're just old."

Hank gulped, "So you're not afraid to show your powers?"

Iris wondered what Hank's power was, and why anyone would want to hide their powers. The mutants didn't seem to be dangerous- they weren't bad people. She knew that if she was a mutant she would show her powers without a problem.

Peter just smiled knowingly, "Powers? What powers? What are you talking about? Did you see something strange here? Nothing anybody would believe if you told them."

He sprinted over to the Pacman machine and began to play the game, "So who are you and what do you want?"

Charles sighed, "We need your help."

"With what?"

"Breaking into a highly secured facility and to get someone out," Charles glanced at Iris to see her expression. She raised an eyebrow delicately- she hadn't realised she was involving herself on an illegal errand.

"Prison break? That's illegal, you know," Peter grinned, as all Iris could do was stare at the stacks of stolen goods that he had tucked in the corner of the room.

"Only if you get caught," Hank muttered.

"So what's in it for me?" Peter asked casually.

"Charles shook his head, "You, you kleptomaniac get to break into the Pentagon."

Peter sudden stopped playing his game, spinning around to look at the others.

"How can I trust you?"

"Because we're just like you," Charles stated, turning to Logan, "Show him."

Logan raised his fist and showed to Peter the same thing that he had shown to Iris earlier on that day as three claws emerged from between his knuckles. Peter's face twisted in disgust.

"It's cool, but disgusting."

Iris burst out laughing, and Peter turned to look at her, "What do you do?"

She hesitated, "Um... I'm not a mutant I just... I'm a friend." She decided that telling him she was a research reporter may not go down too well, considering his already-existing paranoia.

"Shall we go?" Logan asked, "We've got a hell of a lot to do in a very short amount of time."
