Chapter 12

Logan shook his head in confusion as the dark-haired woman that had emerged from the mansion stormed past him.

"If you're here to see anyone at this school, don't bother. They clearly don't take to guests very well." She muttered bitterly, and Logan shrugged casually.

"I think I might just be able to turn that around."

He hoped that was true, but he didn't feel entirely confident as he approached the heavy oak wood doors of the mansion. The building that he had grown to know as the school currently looked like a derelict old house where no one lived. The situation surely had to be worse than he'd imagined... Charles had barely told him much information regarding his state in 1973, and he wondered what the hell it was going to be like.

He knocked on the door and shook his thoughts away quickly. A moment later, a young man with dark hair and glasses appeared in the crack between the frame and the door. He frowned in confusion at Logan, his eyes flickering for the briefest moments to the two cars still on the driveway before returning to Logan's face.

"Can I help you?" The young man asked, and Logan nodded, his own frown deepening.

"Uh... Yeah. What happened to the school?"

"The school's been shut for years." The young man paused, "Are you a parent?"

Logan snorted, caught off guard by the question, "I sure as hell hope not. Who are you?"

The man paused as if sizing up Logan, "Hank. Hank McCoy. I look after the house now."

Things were starting to fall into place, and Logan couldn't help but smile, "You're Beast? Look at you. I guess you're a late bloomer."

Hank appeared quite startled, and he started to push against the door, "I don't know what you're talking about. But I'm going to ask you to leave."

Logan pushed against the door to stop it from closing, desperate not to lose hope yet, "So where's the Professor?"

"There's no Professor here," Hank replied, pushing the door more aggressively and taking Logan by surprise.

"You're pretty strong for a scrawny kid. You sure there's not a little Beast in there?" He joked, and Hank shook his head quickly.

"No. He's not here."

"Come on Beast. Come on Beastie," Logan teased, and just as Hank tried to protest, Logan pushed through the door and stormed into the mansion.

"Hey!" Hank tried to stop him, "I said the school is closed. You need to leave."

"Not until I see the Professor," Logan retaliated, hoping everything would become a bit simpler soon.

Suddenly he felt a hand grab onto his shoulder as Hank pulled him back, "There's no Professor here- I told you that." He paused, "We've already had an unwanted visitor today, and we really wouldn't like another one."

"We?" Logan questioned loudly, "So there is someone else here!"

He hesitated, glancing at Hank's frustrated face before sighing, "Look kid, you and I are going to be good friends." He pulled his fist back and punched Hank in the face, causing him to reel back in pain.

"Professor!" Logan shouted, turning to glance over his shoulder just as the Beast that he recognised came hurtling towards him. He stepped sideways quickly, and a moment later heard an English accent from the stairs behind him.

"Hank! What's going on? I thought I told you not to answer the door again-" The young man who had emerged at the top of the stairs stopped short, frowning when he caught sight of Logan.

"Professor?" Logan asked, wondering what the hell had happened to the Charles that he'd known.

"Please don't call me that," Charles replied with a frown.

"Why? Do you know this guy?" He pointed at Beast, who now appeared to be hanging from the ceiling.

"He looks... slightly familiar," Charles slurred, "Get off the bloody chandelier Hank."

"You can walk..." Logan murmured in confusion.

"You're a perceptive one," Charles snorted in response, sitting down on the bottom step.

"I thought Erik-" Logan started to say, but Charles cut him off sharply.

"Which makes it slightly perplexing that you missed our sign on the way in. This is private property, my friend. I'm going to have to ask him... to ask you to leave."

Logan was finding this incredibly frustrating- the Charles he knew was easy to speak to and understanding, "Well, I'm afraid I can't do that. Because... uh... I was sent here for you."

"Well whoever it was that sent you that I'm busy," Charles bit back, and Logan groaned inwardly.

"That's going to be a little tricky... Because the person who sent me... was you."

Charles' brow furrowed, "What?"

Logan knew he had nothing to lose. "About 50 years from now. I know. Stay with me."

"Like, in the future 50 years from now?" Charles questioned, running his hand through his tangled hair.

"Yeah," Logan nodded, allowing it to sink in.

"I sent you from the future?"

"Yeah."

Charles' face darkened, "Piss off."

"If you had your powers, you'd know I was telling the truth," Logan told him roughly.

"How do you know I don't have my p...? Who are you?" Charles whispered, "Are you CIA? You've been watching me?"

Logan tried to protest, "I know you, Charles. We've been friends for years. I know your powers came when you were nine. I know you thought you were going crazy when it started... all the voices in your head. And it wasn't until you were twelve... that you realised all the voices were in everyone else's head. Do you want me to go on?"

Charles' blue eyes had gone misty, "I never told anyone that."

Logan nodded quickly, "Not yet, no. But you will."

"Alright," Charles responded, "You've piqued my interest. What do you want?"

Logan sighed in relief, "We have to stop Raven. I need your help. We need your help."

At his words, Charles seemed to recoil. "I think I'd like to wake up now." A moment later he had walked out of the room in silence.

Hank stepped closer to Logan hesitantly, "What does she have to do with this?"

He slowly returned to his human form and walked into the next room, gesturing for Logan to follow.

As he did, he began to tell the two men what had happened to Raven.

"So you're saying... they took Raven's power, and what? They weaponised it?"

Logan nodded, "Yep."

"She is unique," Hank murmured, and Charles muttered something in agreement.

Logan continued, "In the beginning the Sentinels were just targeting mutants, then they began to identify the genetics in non-mutants who'd eventually have mutant children or grandchildren. Then they started targeting everybody. Many of the humans tried to help us, it was a slaughter. Leaving only the worst of humanity in charge. I've been in a lot of wars, I've never seen anything like this. And it all starts with her."

"When did they start attacking?" Hank asked, and Logan sighed.

"About forty years from now. There was a reporter, called Iris Miracle-"

Charles' scotch glass fell to the floor and shattered.

"Iris Miracle?" He whispered, "What happened to her?"

Logan frowned, "She was a really famous reporter by the time the sentinels rolled around. She was extremely controversial- a human who was supporting the mutants and writing articles to defend them. She was all over the place until..."

"Until what?" Charles demanded, his eyes shining.

"A sentinel attacked her. Turns out she was a mutant too. The first to be killed by the sentinels." Logan shook his head, "How do you know her?"

Charles didn't say anything- he just slumped into his chair and buried his face in his hands. Logan glanced at Hank hesitantly, who cleared his throat.

"We... we worked and fought with her ten years ago again Sebastian Shaw. But she's... She's extremely powerful. And we think Erik will try to use her powers. So Charles... wiped her memory. Of her powers and of all of us."

"And you haven't seen her since?" Logan murmured, his gaze falling on Charles.

"Not until today. She turned up saying she wanted to question us about mutants for her research. We..." Charles sighed, "I turned her away."

Oh. Logan suddenly realised that the woman he'd bumped into on the way in had been Iris Miracle. He glanced out of the window and saw that her car was still sitting there.

"She's still outside."

Charles groaned and leant forwards, his skin paling.

"I don't want her to die," He whispered, "She shouldn't have to die."

"Then help me." Logan seized the moment, "If we can save Raven, we can save Iris."

Charles raised his head slowly, "For her. Anything for her."
