•chapter twenty-six• |economically challenged|

I held my breath as I knocked on the door to economics, my lateness probably enough to bring me the detention I was hoping to achieve throughout the day.

When the door is opened, I see many faces staring at me. I stand straight and approach the teacher. What was worst, was that I had forgotten his name completely.

"Hi sir! I'm sorry I'm late... I ran into some trouble" I say, giving him a big smile. He nods.

"That's alright. Do you still remember what econ group you're in?" He asks. I nod back at him.

"Go take a seat and they can explain what's happening" he says. I venture into the classroom. I spot Liam and Forest sitting at the back and so I approach them.

"Hey." I say, flopping down onto the spare seat. Liam smiles awkwardly.

"Sup"

Forest waves slowly. "Glad you could make it"

I nod. Pulling out my books.

"We were just listing the amount of money a single mother earns compared to a small family. You haven't missed much" Liam says.

I nod, writing the date in my book.

"Well- a single mother doesn't make much. I can tell you that for sure"

I say, looking into his eyes, which are an incredible colour.

"So should I put that down?" He asks, raising an eyebrow.

I don't answer- and that's not because I'm being rude, it's because I'm not paying attention.

"Jo?" He says. "Jo!"

I snap out of it, taking a deep breath.

"Sorry- I was caught up in how gorgeous you are" I say without thinking, scanning my school bag and reaching in. Liam looks away. OH GOD. DID I SERIOUSLY JUST SAY THAT? Wow. Who am I. WHAT THE HECK. THAT IS THE CHEESIEST THING I COULD HAVE EVER SAID.

"Wow. You guys are being really weird right now" Forest says, running her fingers through her hair.

I glance to the teacher.

What could I do to get his attention?

I grip the table slightly, giving Liam an apologetic look.

And then I push the table down, all the papers flooding to the floor.

"The hell?!" Forest yells. I bite down on my lip as everyone in the class stares at me.

Jeez, Chris owes me. Veronica's files better reveal something or else.

I stand up, climbing onto the table next to mine, my distraction foolish and childish at the same time. Of course I had to pick the immature and dumb way to get this job done.

"Jolie Argent. Get down right now or I'll give you a detention" Sir says, walking close to the table.

I feel like a buzzer goes off as he says this.

I jump onto the next table- kids jumping away from the table like scared chickens when the wolf enters the coop.

A tall boy reaches for me- wrapping his arms around my waist and hoisting me down. I scrunch my hands into a ball and throw it at him, he falls back.

Sir grabs me by the wrist and drags me outside, shutting the door loudly. I shudder from the loud sound.

"WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT!?!" He yells. I can smell his mint breath. His face just inches from mine.

" I felt like...," I close my eyes. "Having some fun. Yeah." I say, nodding. He squints his eyes.

"go inside and help clean everything up. Go on" he says, sighing.

I stand back- flabbergasted.

"So what? You aren't gonna give me a detention?" I ask. He shakes his head. Dammit. ALL THAT FOR NOTHING ?!?!

"All sorts of crazy things have been happening to you. I'm not going to get mad at you when you aren't having the best of times. Go on kid. And apologize to Tim- you might have broken his nose"

I scrunch my face up, opening the doors to the classroom.

Everyone stares at me and I cringe.

I slowly walk to my table and I lift it back up, getting down on my knees and picking up the papers. Liam kneels down beside me.

"What are you up to?" He asks.

My eyes meet his.

"Who says I'm up to something?" I ask. He shrugs. I reach for a piece of paper and he reaches for the same one. Our hands touch briefly and I quickly lift mine away.

"I just...need a detention." I quickly reply.

"Look- I know I'm just some hot sporty freshman- but you can trust me" he says, almost begging me.

"Fine." I say, tugging his hands out of the classroom and into the empty hallway.

"Are you sure your secret is safe here?" He asks. I look around the corridor.

"Good point" I scope the hallways for an empty classroom, one hand tugging Liam behind me.

"You know that girl from the track team?" I say, locking my eyes with his.

"Veronica? The female sports protege? Sure I do"

I nod. "Well I need to find some information on her. I need her files"

He nods understandingly, taking a step closer until we're hardly inches apart.

"So you expect to have a talk to the principal and meanwhile waltz to the file cabinet and just take a sneak peek? No way" he says.

I blink rapidly.

Oh right.

There was that speed bump in my plan. The part I hadn't thought through.

"Good point. I'm going to need some help" I say, tilting my head and smirking at him.

"Well- I guess I could help if you want" he says, leaning in.

I take a step back.

"I don't want to get you in trouble Liam. I couldn't do that to you"

The doors open and coach walks in. I enlarge my eyes, thinking fast. I pull my body into Liam's and connect my lips with his.

"Whoa! Jesus!" Coach curses, covering his eyes partly. "What are you pip-squeaks doing in here? You little runts"

I pull away, smiling at the surprised expression on Liam's face.

"Sorry coach!" Liam says, smirking. Coach grumbles.

"You! Detention!" Coach yells, angrily ripping a detention slip from his pocket. He throws it to my feet and I bend down to pick it up.

"What about me?" Liam says innocently. Coach shakes his head.

"No. Not you son. Best player on the lacrosse team? Not tempting that" and with that, he walks out of the classroom.

I give Liam a toothy grin, standing on my tippy toes.

"Yes! I've never been so happy to be caught kissing a boy!" I say, waving the detention slip in the air.

Liam smiles.

"So- what do you need me to do?" He leans on the table.

"I need you to distract the principal while he does his brief little chat with me like 'you're new to the school you need to know the rules thing' While I sneak in and get her files"

His eyes enlarge. He gulps down.

"What if you get caught?" He asks. I smile, wrinkling my nose at him.

" then it's my lucky day. Hey- it's gonna be fine." I say, squeezing his shoulder. Liam wraps his arm around my waist.

"I'm trusting you" he says.

" Liam...remember the second day of the second week of school- both our second days? And we played 20 questions? I told you I had gotten in some trouble? Well I think when my mum hears I get in trouble she'll stress and when she finds out it was for stealing some files- she'll laugh. I think she expects more from me- like me setting my classmate on fire or something" I laugh. He laughs as well.

"You wanna skip the rest of the class?" He asks. "Come back for lunch?"

I smile.

"That's the second best idea I've heard all day. First coming in with myself dancing atop the table like a chicken."

And with that end note, Liam and I left the school to go play around in the woods. Tripping over branches- piggybacks and lots of laughs.
