•chapter twenty• |pizza date|

I was halfway through my morning shift when my phone buzzed, alarming myself and the small kitten I examined.

I turn off my phone- putting my attention back on to Mittens, who is half asleep.

Deaton presses her paw gently before handing me the vaccination.

"Slowly put this into her paw- be careful" he instructs. With that- I slowly put the needle into Mittens paw.

Mittens stirs. Deaton looks at his watch and then to me.

"You're shift is over in ten. Why don't you call back that person that's been calling you for five minutes straight"

I smile.

"Are you sure? I don't mind helping out a little longer. I can work another shift?" I ask.

He shakes his head politely.

"It's alright- check your mobile"

I chuckle, pulling my phone from my pocket and examining the caller IDs.

LIAM: (7) MISSED CALLS.

I blush, tapping his name and putting it to my ear.

It rings twice before he picks up.

"Hey!" He says, excited.

I smile into the phone.

"Hey. How are you?" I sympathetically reply, blushing even though no one was around.

"I'm...I'm good. So Scott told me how you took a bit of a beating last night- so are you alright?" He asks.

"Yeah- berserkers are aggressive...that all. I'm good though."

He chuckles.

"Well I was wondering if you want to go somewhere today?" He asks.

"I would love that" I say, smiling so hard my cheeks hurt.

"Wow. Awesome. Well...I don't actually have a license so..." he trails off. I smile.

"I do. Want me to drive by your house?

I hear him give an embarrassing laugh.

"If you don't mind...?"

I smile. "Of course not. It would be my pleasure"

"Thanks Jo- see you soon"

"See you!" I reply.

It takes me about an hour to swing by home and get ready and another fifteen minutes to arrive at Liam's home- which is a nice house.

I take a deep breath- knowing that the last time I saw Liam he was immobilised on a bench in the veterinarian centre.

I knock on the door, surprised by nerves that shake my body slightly.

I really liked Liam and I wasn't sure if he liked me that way. Just a few days before he asked me out- he had gone to a party with another girl like I didn't exist.

Why did I have to be lying in a hospital bed for him to realise his feeling? Either way, it was a date, nothing serious.

I knocked on the door and heard footsteps slowly walk to the door.

It opens slowly and I expect to see Liam's energetic face staring up at me and am surprised when I don't.

"Jolie! Hi!" Dr. Dunbar says. The same doctor that had helped me when I was in hospital.

"Good morning Mr.Dunbar!," I say, shaking his hands. "I'm here to pick up. Liam. Is this a bad time?"

He shakes his head. "Not at all. Come on in"

He steps away from the door and motions for me to follow him. We enter the lounge room. A large sofa is placed in the middle. In front of a huge television.

"I'll go get Liam for you. Make yourself at home"

I smile and before I can reply- he's already zipped up the stairs. I awkwardly walk to the lounge, sitting down and pulling out my phone.

Text message from Deaton:

Help needed at the vet tonight! Is that alright?

I text back yes, and slip my phone back in my pocket.

It takes a good two minutes until Liam and his father come down the stairs, Liam's face racking with nerves. He gulps.

"Jo! Hey!" He says. His father walks to the island in their kitchen.

"Can I get you guys anything?" His father asks. Liam awkwardly shrugs, running his fingers through his hair.

"That's okay dad. We were going to go get lunch" Liam replies. His dad smirks. Then heads back upstairs.

"Hey" I say, smiling at Liam. He returns the smile, filling the space between us with a long hug.

Felt good to hug him and see him safe and healthy. Even though the tightness of his hug hurt the sore bits of my body- I still enjoyed it.

He takes my hand in his and we walk out of the house the way we entered.

"So...what have we got planned for today?" I ask him, unlocking my car.

He shrugs.

"I thought we should go get some pizza and eat it at the park or something. We don't have to though. I mean it's up to you-"

I interrupt him mid sentence. "I couldn't have thought of a better date"

He gives me a hopeful smile as I start driving.

"I know this is all I ever ask you- but are you alright?" I ask, raising an eyebrow but keeping my eyes on the road.

"Last night was scary. And it was probably the worst thing that's ever happened to me. Being stuck in that well was repetitive. I kept climbing up only to slip when I reach the top. I almost gave up and then Scott came"

I smile.

"He's a good man" I say- grinning wildly.

"Yeah. At first I hated him for what he did to me. Now...." He trailed off.

"Well I personally- am so glad you didn't give up" I say. He smiles, smiling a crooked smile. He lightly chuckles.

"I couldn't give up. I had to take you on a date. Remember?" He says- almost childishly.

I laugh. "As if you were thinking about me. You were thinking about the chipotle sale. They were to die for"

We both end up in tears, even though nothing we said was that funny, it still was good to laugh, to smile.

We were just a bunch of teenagers with not a worry in the world.

And by the time we were at the park with the pizzas, I was dreading for the date to be over. Liam opens the pizza box as I position myself on the damp grass.

"Ladies first" he says.

I do a small curtsy.

"Such a gentleman"

He laughs. I take a piece of pizza and wait for him to get one. Together we take a bite.

"Tastes great mate" I say. He nods.

"Last time I had pizza- I was having an all nighter with Mase- trying to beat our call of duty highscore"

I laugh . "And did you?"

He nods no.

"Ended up watching a documentary about Katy Perry"

I laugh.

"Man. I can't even remember. It would have to have been at a party or something. Pizza is the best though"

He nods in agreement.

By the time I arrive to drop Liam at home it's almost sundown. I get out of the car and walk with Liam to his door- hand in hand.

"Thank you so much Liam. For one of the best dates I've ever been on" I say- smiling at him.

He returns the smile.

"Next one will be even better"

I smirk. "Are you asking me on another date already?"

He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me closer, our faces just inches apart.

"Yes"

And then he fills the gap between our lips with a passionate kiss.

And with arms around my waist, I wrap them around his neck and run my fingers through his soft brown hair.

He pulls away.

"I really really like you" he says slowly- with a matter o fact expression plastered on his face. I stand on my tippy toes and peck him on the lips.

"And I really really like you too"

He kisses me once more before letting go of my waist and reaching for his house keys.

I give him a hug and begin walking down the stairs of the porch and down to my car.

"Goodnight Liam" I say to him. He smiles back at me.

"Night"

And with that- I make my way to the veterinarian centre.
