•chapter sixteen• |go for broke|

I stood in front of the veterinarian hospital and tried to calm my nerves.

Many questions zoomed through my head, like,

What if he doesn't like me? What if I say the wrong thing?

I swallow my nerves, bringing my fists to the door to make a small knock.

And surprisingly enough, my knock was enough to bring the man to the door of his Small veterinarian centre.

He opens the door and the scent of medicine and needles flow into my nostrils. For a second I inspect the small veterinarian centre. The large surgical bench in the centre of the room, the small puppy lied comfortably on top,

"It seems I finally get to meet the newest addition to the Argent family. And what a pleasure it is" Deaton says.

I turn around and smile at him, grasping his large hand and shaking it.

"Why, its great to meet you as well. My uncle speaks very fondly of you"

Deaton chuckles, leaning against the surgical bench.

"all the same to you. Oh how much he appreciates his darling niece. I'm beginning to see why" he smiles. Something about the short man is so friendly, like you could trust him with all your secrets. Dark secrets and bright secrets.

He motions towards a desk at the back. He sits in the chair at the front and I sit in front of the desk.

"So you would like a job here?" he asks, opening a Manila folder.

My resume.

"Sure am. Yes" I reply. He nods, reading through.

"Says you've been arrested once. Is it alright if I ask?"

I nod. "I was involved in an accident. Two boys got into a fight, one being my ex boyfriend. I tried to get in between in but I failed. My ex was hurt badly. I just got interviewed"

Deaton eyes me and he nods slowly.

"Sounds like you were in the wrong place in the wrong time"

"in all due respect sir, when my father died- I lived on the wrong side of life. Nothing I did was thought through. I understand what I did wrong."

He smiles. "And how very noble. Now- none of this nonsense actually matters to me, I want to know how you'll take care of this place when I'm not around"

I nod.

"Sometimes people bring in disastrous matters. Dogs with four broken legs, cats impaled with sharp objects and sometimes- bigger dogs with bigger problems" he puts my resume down. "I'm talking werewolves. Were coyotes. Windigoes. Everything" he sighs. "Even Canimas"

I takes a deep breath, nodding. "I've done safety courses- I know how to keep people alive"

He smiles. "I'm aware that you know that. Isn't that how you're here? If you hadn't known well enough, you would have removed the dagger from your body. You saved yourself by keeping it in"

I nod slowly. "I had to save Scott" I whisper under my breath. But because this room is so quiet, he can hear me for sure.

"I like you already. You sure do remind me of your cousin, Allison" he speaks, crossing his fingers and leaning his elbows on the desk.

"Thank you" I say, looking down. At that sudden second my iPhone buzzes. I look to Deaton, once seeing the caller ID.

"Do you want to take that?" Deaton asks.

Its Christopher.

"Is that alright?" I ask, as politely as I can. I know that it is probably important.

He chuckles.

"Of course it is- I was going to finish up anyway. Take it sweetheart"

I smile, standing up and pushing my chair in.

I put the phone to my ear.

"Chris." I address him. He sighs into the phone.

"Are you done with your interview?" he asks. The edge in his voice worried. I glance out of the window and then to a clock on the wall.

Its four o clock, school would have finished a little while ago and the sun was setting.

"I was almost finished. Whats up?" I ask.

I can hear him take a deep breath and then exhale.

"I want to talk to you in person. Its about Kate and her berzerkers. And...Liam"

"What about Liam?" I ask, standing straighter. My attention on the every word my uncle was about to say.

"I'd rather tell you on the way there. I'll swing by the vet- and we can talk in the car"

I nod. "Sounds good. Let me finish up with Deaton okay?"

"alright. See you soon" Chris speaks into the phone. I hang up, returning to the seat.

"Sorry about that. It was just Christopher" I say. He nods.

"That's fine. I just want to borrow you for a second" He stands up and walks to the front room. The one with the puppy on the bench.

"This is Pooky. He broke his leg yesterday afternoon"

The dog moves slightly, opening one eye but staying put.

"The meds we gave him are keeping him our of pain. He's just resting right now. If you're going to work here you need devotion. Pooky needs to trust you to care for him to your best abilities. You owe that to the animals of the world"

Pooky leans over and licks my wrist. I pet him softly.

Then I hear a horn beep from outside. Bright lights shine through the window.

"That's Chris. I should probably head" I say, shaking Deatons hand.

"That's fine. Thank you for coming by today" he smiles. "I'll figure out what days of the week you'll be working here" he says. I enlarge my eyes.

"So I got the job!" I squeal.

He nods. "No brainer."

I throw my arms around him.

"Thank you thank you thank you. You will not regret this!" I say.

He pulls away.

"Have a good night Jolie"

I grin, grabbing my bag and opening the door of the centre. I approach the black car slowly, then swing open the door to the passengers side.

"Good to see you" he says, a straight expression plastered on his face.

"Why hello, awesome uncle"

"You're not going to think I'm so awesome when you figure what we're about to do"

And my heart drops.
