•chapter seven•

With the day starting rather boring, as soon as the lunch bell rang I was one of the first to spring from my chair and head to the stands to meet Mason and Liam.

When I get there, Mason and Liam both have their books out and Mason is arguing with Liam about whether the novel study was due next week or next month.

I stand next to them.

"You guys mind some company?" I smile. Liam's lips are pressed into a thin line and he slowly nods.

Mason grins at me.

"Sure!"

I sit down and bring my water bottle to my lips. At the corner of my eye I inspect Liam's bandage.

"Looks painful" I say to him, motioning to the blood seeping through.

He raises an eyebrow, an anxious look spreading over his face.

"Oh uh. Yeah. Uh." He shifts his arm away from my view.

We had only known each other for a day, and I was going good as far as friends went, so I decided to leave it at that.

As I let my mind wander, I kept thinking about Ronnie.

She was a fast runner, like, really fast. Normal humans didn't run that fast without training. So yeah, props to her for being awesome.

And then again, she did stand us up. I half expected this, that she agreed to eat with us just to be kind and would be probably be found right now, laughing with a bunch of hot seniors. It was understandable...'too cool to sit with some fifteen year old seniors'. My hands balled into fists as I almost felt upset.

Liam stood up and swung his bag over his shoulder.

"Well I'm going to go put my books in my locker. I'm not lugging around this junk all day. Wanna come?" He asks both of us.

"Sure" I reply, standing up. Mason shrugs.

"Sorry man, I need to call my mom and uh...yeah"

Liam laughs. "Geez, coulda just said no"

Liam begins walking to the school and I follow him.

"So..." I say.

"Sooooo..." He replies.

Didn't take Sherlock Holmes to know Liam was acting weird today and the bandage on his wrist added to the suspicion but like I said, we were practically strangers. I had no right to question him. Anything could be going on.

"So, reckon we should probably get to know each other better?" Liam says, awkwardly changing the subject. We arrive at his locker and he opens it.

" I guess so, seeing as we're gonna be econ family" I laugh. A small smile spreads on his face.

"Well...let's play a game" he says. I smile, leaning my back against the lockers.

"Go for it" I reply.

"Twenty questions. I'll ask" he says.

"Alrighty. Ready when you are" I say, biting my lip. He leans on the locker beside me.

" one. Are you...single?" He says. My heart beat booms.

"Yup. As a pringle. "

Liam smiles.

"Two. Ever driven a car?" He smirks.

"I have my license." I answer.

"Three. Gotten arrested?" He says, running his fingers through his hair.

"Well..." I think about whether to answer this. This was my fresh start, did I really want to bring the old stupid me into this?

I frown.

"Yeah..."

"Four. Is it okay if I ask what for?"

I shrug. "I was with my boyfriend and he got in a fight with a dude. The other guy brought out a knife" I trailed off and looked down at my shoes. "Wrong place. Wrong time"

"Well...we all have our regrets right?" He asks.

I smile. "What bout you?"

"I have anger issues. I ruined my coaches car. I hit things...people when I'm mad"

"But it's okay Liam because you're a good person, that much I know" I say.

He gives me a hopeful smile.

"Maybe. Five..."

Liam pushes himself off the locker and we begin walking down the corridor.

"Would you maybe wanna go on a..." He stops there, his attention focused on a figure making her way down the stairs.

Looking graceful and beautiful, Kira glides down the stairs. Obviously catching Liam's eye.

Kira smirks at Liam, and then something else happens.

Kira's ankle rolls and she comes tumbling down the stairs. Liam rushes to her, completely oblivious that he was walking with me. I stop following him and slowly walk towards Kira, who tries her best to pull a pose and look sexy.

"So hey," she says, pursing her lips. "Would you maybe wanna go to a party tonight?"

I stop walking and watch Liam, who is almost mesmerized by Kira.

His head nods slowly.

"Absolutely" he answers. Liam helps Kira up and they exchange numbers. Then Kira goes on her merry way.

He joins me, completely starstruck.

"Wow. Well that happened fast" he says. I raise an eyebrow, slightly pissed off.

"Yeah, well-" then I am interrupted by the end of lunch bell.

"Bye Liam" I say, storming off to class.

Was it weird that I was pissed off at this? I mean, Liam literally finished our game by saying 'would you maybe wanna go on a-'. On a what? A date? And then Kira comes in and sweeps him off his feet. It wasn't like I even liked him...but he was cool, and if he did ask me out...well.. I guess I would have been stoked.

But he didn't. He didn't. The hot junior Kira swooped him off his feet and asked him to a party before he even finished his damn sentence.

I headed to the girls bathroom, my head hurting and my blood boiling.

I am about to enter when the door swings open and Ronnie from track practice walks out.

I glare at her, feeling furious.

"Hey! What happened to you? You could have said no if us freshman's were really that embarrassing. Cause it's a little rude to stand people up" I say, shooting her a deadly look.

She raises an eyebrow. She doesn't look well either. Dried blood at the tip of her nostrils, sweat beaded on her forehead and her face a pale colour.

"Seriously? Lay off. My life doesn't revolve around making friends. I have things to deal with" she spits. I gasp.

"Fine. Next time I'll try to book an appointment first. Sorry princess. Have fun finding someone to hang with, seeing as everyone else already thinks you're some kind of anti social ill person" I spit right back.

Okay, maybe it was all an over reaction... But I was pissed. At everything.

I spun on my heels and made my way to history.

As I entered the room Miss Henderson had already started teaching and she sent me a stern look.

"Mrs Argent. You're late." She states.

"You don't say" I sigh, storming to my chair.

"If I wanted the sass I woulda asked for it"

"But I gave it to you anyway didn't I?" I say.

Murmurs fill the classroom and Miss Henderson slides something pink on to my desk.

It's a detention slip.

"And as a peace offering, darling, I give it to you anyway as well" she grins. Passive aggressive. I hate it.

I let out a giant sigh, mentally slapping myself.

During history I feel my phone vibrate against my thigh. I slip it out of my pocket and check it from underneath my table.

It was Liam, inviting me to a party at a beach house. Linked to the invitation were heaps of other people.

And I was one out of a hundred.

Everything boiled anger inside me but I shut it out.

At the end of history the detention slip was still on my table. I didn't leave when all the other kids left, I stayed in my chair.

"Miss Henderson, look, I'm going through a lot of really weird and confusing things right now and... Whether I take the detention or not, I'm sorry okay?" I say.

She tucks her brown hair behind her ear.

"Jolie Argent. Were you related to Allison?" She asks. I look down at the table and out my head in my hands.

I try to answer her but tears stream out of my eyes. I cry into my arms.

I cry for Kate, for Ronnie, for my father, for Kira and Liam and for god sake, I just cry.

Miss Henderson rubs my back, comforting me.

"It's just...so screwed" I sulk.

Miss places a tissue box on to the table and I wipe away my tears.

"Look Jolie, I don't know you very well but I think your a good kid. So I'm going to let you off the hook okay?"

she scrunches the detention slip in a ball and tosses it at the blackboard.

"But don't you go thinking I'm soft or something. I won't do this every time you cry" she warns. I smile hopefully.

"Thanks miss..." I sigh.

She pats my back.

"Well hon, I think it's time you head to your next class. See you tomorrow" she says.

I wave goodbye and leave the classroom.
