《So Human》[KeixYeontan]
*☼*―――――*☼*―――――
[Note: this oneshot is related to one of my books named The Summer of My Youth which is a KTH ff. Here in the oneshot two dogs from that story become human. It's actually BL.]
┈━ ◇ ━┈
"Suki-chan!" His voice comes out broken, almost trembling as he screams, eyes open wide in horror.
His body feels different, almost unfamiliar. He has never felt this before, the freedom of limbs, unusual exposure to the open air and many more things that feel new to him.
"What the hell?!" He mutters again when he feels that something is off.
Something? Everything is wrong at this point.
He stands up, feeling lost and confused to the core and why wouldn't he? He perfectly remembers his name- kei -and that he used to be natsuki's cute dog.
"I feel so... human." He breathes in deeply, looking down at his body as a gasp makes its way out of his human mouth.
"I need clothes." His cheeks turn pink and he looks away, covering his lower half with his hand even though he is alone in the room.
Why is he alone? Where is natsuki and her mom?
He recognises the room. It's one of those empty rooms in their house.
"There might be some old clothes of suki-chan's dad here?!" He tilts his head and rummages through the closet.
He is right! Thankfully there are some clothes that fit him properly.
"This fits strangely perfect on me." Kei questions his whole existence because of this somehow.
Why not? Dogs have overthinking problems too. On top of that, he's a human now.
"Whatever!" He shrugs, leaving the closet door open as he leaves the room eventually getting out of the house.
He looks around with sparkling eyes. Same houses, same streets, same trees; yet he feels so good looking at them with human eyes.
"Wow! This is awesome." The smile on his face stays intact as he moves forward with slow steps.
"But I miss suki-chan." He suddenly remembers, pouting as her usually smiling face comes in his mind. "Where is she?" He wonders, walking down the very familiar street.
"Maybe she is with yukio-kun?" His eyes light up as he almost runs to taehyung's house.
"Yukio-kun! Suki-chan! Where are you all?" He shouts, peeking inside his house through the slightly open door but he hears no response.
"Eh? Where is everyone disappeared to?" He gulps, opening the door as he walks inside, taking a glance in the garden. The familiar plants and flowers are still there as usual.
"Holy shit!!" He jumps, almost falling down on his butt when he looks ahead of him.
"Who the hell are you?" He gets alerted, blinking his eyes as he looks at the person standing in front of him.
His hair is a messy blackish brown colour and he adorns an oversized grey t-shirt paired with some shorts. He looks really cozy but his face remains expression less.
Kei puts his hand in front him, getting into an 'I can fight' position.
"You look dumb. You must be kei." The person speaks up as kei gets surprised.
"Huh?" Kei is as confused as he first was when he found out that he had become a human.
"Are you the vampire dog?" Kei gasps again as yeontan sighs, so done with kei's overreaction.
"Calm down, man!" Yeontan says in a monotonous voice. "And I have a name for taehyung's sake!" He rolls his eyes.
"Why are we suddenly human?" Now kei stands back properly, calmed down. "And isn't it for God's sake?" He says in a small voice.
"How would I know?" Yeontan shrugs, walking outside of the house.
"When did you wake up as a human, tannie?" Kei asks as he trails behind yeontan.
"You became human but your traits still remain of a dog." Yeontan mutters under his breath, running a hand through his hair as they walk. "Just this morning." He says shortly to kei.
"Why are you always cold to me?" Kei pouts unknowingly to himself but yeontan ignores him.
"If suki-chan knew how cold you actually are, she would never pat you on your big head." Kei scoffs, walking behind yeontan.
"Excuse me?" Yeontan suddenly turns around, coming face to face with a sulking kei.
"If you actually are a human, behave like one. Do you want to go back to being a dog again or not? If you do, stay quiet and help me find a way. No one is here, it seems we're alone." Yeontan says in a firm voice as kei gulps, nodding his head.
"Let's go to the school, maybe everyone is there?" Kei suggests.
"What's the logic behind that?" Yeontan says as they pass the one and only bridge that leads to the school. "But, since you insist, I'll go." He clears his throat, not looking back at kei and keeps walking.
Kei smiles happily, skipping his way ahead of yeontan.
"He's still too energetic." Yeontan whispers, shaking his head.
The streets might feel weird because of unusual emptiness, but birds can still be heard and ocean waves made the same noice. The Summer is in full bloom, tree leaves casting shadows under their feet as they walk.
"Tannie, do you have a wish or something like a bucket list of things you want to do as a human?" Kei asks him, his voice never calm.
"We literally just found out that we're suddenly human this morning. How am I suppose to have a bucket list?" Yeontan chuckles, making fun of kei.
"You're no fun! An hour or two is enough for you to make a bucket list. I have one too! You wanna listen?" Kei says, now slowly walking beside yeontan at his pace.
"Let's figure out what's going on first, okay?" Yeontan tries to smile but it comes out as a sarcastic one.
"Okay!" Kei says, somehow sounding disappointed.
They soon reach the school. And to their surprise, it's dead empty. No one is in sight. This makes yeontan more anxious than he already is.
The school gate is closed, with no one in sight, now they have no other option.
"I never thought I'd be doing this, but here we go." Yeontan mutters, kei hears him but looks at him, confused.
Yeontan takes a couple steps back, preparing himself for a run as he sprints forward to the school gate and jumps, trying to somehow sneak inside by jumping.
"Is this going to work?" Kei asks as he watches yeontan fail to jump above the gate.
"I can do it!" He pants, again stepping back and running until he finally makes it inside the school gate but as soon as he puts his feet on the ground, he starts coughing. He sits down on the ground, panting for air.
Kei panics and quickly jumps inside just like yeontan.
"Are you alright?" Kei sits down beside him as he pats his back, trying to soothe him.
"I forgot that even if I become human, the health problems stay with me forever." Yeontan says, often coughing in between his words.
Kei's face saddens as he rubs yeontan's back.
"Wait here, I'll get some water for you." Kei says, standing up and runs to the water taps in the school ground.
He finds some cups stacked up there. He grabs one of it, filling it with water and runs back to yeontan.
"Do you feel better?" He hands him the cup as yeontan gulps it down slowly.
He humms and kei helps him stand back up.
"So, what do we do now? No one is here." Yeontan says, looking around after regaining his strength.
"I don't know. But I've always wanted to run around in the school. Let's go, take a look inside, shall we?" Kei asks, also gaining his enthusiasm back.
"Oh, come on!" Yeontan whines.
"Please? Please!!" Kei keeps winning louder.
"Argh! Okay, fine." Yeontan tags along as kei runs towards the main building of the school happily.
"What did I get myself into?" Yeontan sighs for the nth time today.
They walk around for a long time in the school while kei plays, doing anything he wants and yeontan watches him doing various fun things.
Yeontan probably still thinks kei is too energetic but deep down, he is having fun as well.
"Hey, tannie! Come here and take a look! Wow! The scenery here is topnotch!" Kei exclaims, beckoning yeontan to stand beside him on the rooftop.
"Where did you even learn that word from?" Yeontan points out but strolls forward, standing beside kei.
"Isn't it a normal word?" Kei looks at him.
"It is! But, it's a little fancy..." yeontan says, looking back at him.
"It's not."
"It is."
"Why is it? It's not!"
"It is!"
"Whatever! Just look ahead of yourself." Kei grabs yeontan's face in his hand as he turns his head towards the front.
Yeontan brushes kei's hands off his face, avoiding his eyes and looks at the front.
"Isn't it beautiful? We can even see the little shrine on the hill from here!" Kei says, pointing towards the small hill.
"Oh? I think we should check out the shrine. Maybe the god can help us?" Yeontan says hopefully.
"You never enjoy the moment!" Kei whines, but he agrees with yeontan and they head downstairs now walking towards the hill.
"Hey, if no one is here, the market will be empty too, right?" Kei suddenly stops on his tracks when they are walking.
"Most probably. why?" Yeontan looks back at him. Kei has a mischievous glint in his eyes as his lips tug up in a smirk.
"What are you plotting?" Yeontan fears the expression on kei's face.
~
"This is considered stealing! Are you a thief?" Yeontan stood with his hands folded in front of him as kei takes a peek inside the food stall.
"No one's gonna know! We're alone here and I was getting hungry. Aren't you?" Kei suddenly looks back, his hair bouncing as he shakes his head cutely.
Yeontan controls his face muscles from acting up so he doesn't end up laughing or even smiling at how adorable kei looked. Instead, he clears his throat.
"Well, I'm hungry too! Let's eat human food today!" Yeontan pushes past kei, taking a look at the food.
"Isn't this so strange? The food is here but no people around." Yeontan mutters as kei humms, busy picking what to eat.
"It all looks delicious! I'll eat everything one by one!" Kei laughs, picking up the chopsticks.
"Hey!! I can use chopsticks too! This is magical!" Kei's eyes go wide but yeontan is unbothered.
"After the biggest shock of becoming human, you're happy about knowing how to use those sticks?" Yeontan shakes head, chuckling a little.
He picks up a pair of chopsticks too and they dig in, eating the, assuming-ly, freshly made food.
"Damn! This is tasty!" Yeontan couldn't control himself and said it out loud.
"It's called takoyaki!" Kei says, smiling eye to eye.
"It's so amazing! Humans are so lucky!" Yeontan says, taking another bite of the ball shaped food.
"You know, you're eating octopus." Kei suddenly speaks up.
"WHAT?" Yeontan's face clearly shows horror.
Kei has to bend down as he laughs his heart out.
"Your face is funny." Kei again says while yeontan is still in shock.
"But this is not funny." Yeontan grimaces, taking a peek inside the ball of takoyaki and almost yeets the chopsticks out of the planet in shock upon seeing the small pieces of octopus.
"I'm not eating this. I'd rather eat something else." Yeontan calms his shocked heart down and finds something else to eat.
"This doesn't have any other animal inside, does it?" Yeontan says as he shows another dish to kei.
"No, it's good to eat!" Kei is still laughing.
"Good!" He sighs, taking a bite. "This is better."
Kei keeps giggling, while yeontan eats.
"Oh, how cute!" Kei mumbles stealing yeontan's attention.
"Hm?" Yeontan tilts his head, looking at kei.
"You! You're messy." Kei moves forward, wiping yeontan's lips with his hand as he smiles.
"W-what are you doing? I can take care of myself." Yeontan's ears turn red but he purses his lips, looking away from kei.
"Okay, you, big dog!" Kei teases him but yeontan is too embarrassed to think of a comeback.
They quickly finish eating and head back on the main street.
~
"We should pray to the kamisama!" Yeontan suggests as they finally make it on top of the hill.
Yeontan nods, tired, and they head inside.
"Do you even know how to pray?" Kei asks, cracking up when yeontan clearly has confusion written on his face.
"Well, that's what you're here for. Take the lead." Yeontan says, trying to sound cool.
"Okay, okay." Kei smiles, "Oh, but we don't have coins." He looks troubled.
Yeontan rummages through his pocket and he doesn't know why he does it. Kei eyes him, confused.
"Damn, you actually have a coin with you? How?" Kei says when yeontan pulls out two coins from his pocket.
"Even I don't know..." yeontan shrugs.
"See and learn." Kei shows yeontan how to pray and he does as kei leads.
"Very good! Now make a wish!" Kei puts his hands together in a prayer. Yeontan copies him.
"I wish to wake up tomorrow as a dog again. I want to sleep in taehyung's arms again." Yeontan says out aloud and bows in front of the alter.
"You're not supposed to say it out aloud, tannie." Kei giggles.
"Shut up." Yeontan snaps, slightly embarrassed.
"Okay, we're done here. Let's sit outside for a while." Kei walks out of the altar room. Yeontan follows him.
Kei goes to sit down on the edge of the hill.
"Hey, that looks dangerous." Yeontan hesitates.
"It's not. Come on!" Kei waves his hand, calling him over and yeontan unwillingly sits down.
"Tell me more about your life back in your hometown." Kei says, his eyes looking at the ocean far beneath them. The setting sun is shining in front of them.
"Uh, well... I was happy- I still am. I really love taehyung a lot, he had given me so much love and care, I can't even imagine a life without him. We used to go to different places together and he'd walk around everywhere with me in his lap." Yeontan smiles at the fond memory.
Kei smiles too, nodding his head.
"I can see that yukio-kun is such a kind person." Kei agrees.
"Yes, he is always patient with me. Always caring for my comfort. He never scolded me, even when I went to play in the mud." Yeontan laughs as he remembers. "Not even when I bit your belt that day." Yeontan realises what he said and stops laughing.
"Oh? So, you do remember, huh? Why did you do it anyway?" Kei asks, eyes piercing into the side of yeontan's face.
"Well, I just... I don't actually remember, you know?" Yeontan shrugs.
Kei's face softens and he smiles gently, looking back at the setting sun.
"You should never lie while being inside the shrine, tannie. Do you know that?" Kei snickers as he sways his legs side to side.
"As if you never lie." Yeontan scoffs, laughing nervously.
"I don't!" Kei emphasises his words.
"I don't too." Yeontan says.
"Oh, really?" Kei looks back at him, thinking something. "Then tell me how you feel after this." Kei says, suddenly grabbing yeontan's t-shirt as he yanks him closer and gives a peck on his cheek.
The shock on yeontan's face is an understatement when kei pouts shyly, letting him go and looks away from him.
"Um, what was that?" Yeontan summons up all his courage just to say those words.
"I don't lie. I did it happily." Kei avoids his eyes. "But you didn't answer me." He reminds him.
"Okay, fine. I feel happy too. I loved spending time with you today." Yeontan inhales deeply, rubbing his nape.
"Well, I probably thought you were cute with that belt around your neck. I didn't really mean to actually bite you. I don't know what I was doing and I just...." yeontan's words remain unsaid when kei again pulls him closer, but, this time kissing him on the lips.
It was just an innocent peck but yeontan's frail heart almost went crazy.
"If we go back to being dogs again tomorrow, don't forget this, okay?" Kei says, smiling sheepishly.
"I won't. I can't." Yeontan smiles, letting his cheeks turn pink without holding back.
Their eyes soon find their way in front of them. It looks like the sun is about to get absorbed by the ocean and its colours are all over the ocean. It is truly beautiful.
Kei sneakily slides his hand under yeontan's which is resting in between them on the ground. Yeontan doesn't retreat back and they enjoy the sunset together.
If this is their only chance as humans, the only chance they can actually convey what they feel, they are thankful. Today was an eventful day and they don't regret a single second of it.
