XII. You are Unworthy
"Why did you bring us back?" Thor demands an answer from his father. The moment the bifrost took them all home, Eldrid knew Thor would be furious. That was who her eldest brother was. He often let his temper get the better of him, or his pride.
"Do you realize what you've done? What you've started?" Odin snaps back at his eldest. Eldrid could see their father was teetering on his Odin Sleep and his emotions were not as calculated as they could be. But in this moment, her arm was burning too much for her to focus on anything else.
"I was protecting my home." Thor snaps back.
"You cannot even protect your friends! Your own sister! How dare you put her in danger." Odin exclaims, motioning to Eldrid who is cradling her burned arm. Loki standing behind her just in case he needed to support her. All three men in the room were furious for various reasons, but they all had one factor to their rage. Eldrid was hurt. "How could you hope to protect a kingdom?" Odin snaps as he takes out Heimdall's sword from the keyhole, tossing it back to the gatekeeper. "Get him to a healing room! Now!" Odin yells at the Warriors Three and Sif. He then turns back and looks at his daughter, he could see the burn on her arm was severe. And it made him angier.
"There won't be a kingdom to protect if you refuse to act." Thor states, his eyes also falling on Eldrid. He wants to see if she's okay, but he knows from one look of her facial expressions told him she was barely holding it together. "The Jotuns must learn to fear me, just as they once feared you." Thor adds to his point.
Loki looks at his sister's arm and she hisses in pain, "You should get to Eir..." Loki whispers to her and she refuses with a shake of her head.
"That's pride and vanity talking, not leadership." Odin says, his voice having lowered and he wasn't yelling anymore. "You've forgotten everything i taught you about a warrior's patience."
"While you wait and be patient, the Nine Realms laugh at us." Thor bites back at his father. "You'd stand giving speeches while Asgard falls."
"You are a vain, greedy, cruel boy!" Odin yells directly at his eldest.
"And you are an old man and a fool!" Thor yells back towards his father just as loud. Eldrid watches two of the most important men in her life fight and tear each other down with words.
"Stop this! Please!" Eldrid yells finally, she was tired and hurting both physically and emotionally. She could not stand watching her family be at each other's throats like this. Her family was everything to her and more. Her whole life was dedicated to her kingdom and family. Her brothers were her protectors and their father looked after them all. Their mother was the one that could soothe the savage beast of any of the men. And Eldrid was the princess, the beloved daughter of the Allfather and Queen.
After moments of pause, both men reflect on their anger and words. Moreso Odin than Thor. "Yes. I was a fool." Odin says, his voice back to it's normal tone.
"Father-"
"Silence, my daughter." Odin says calmly, looking at Eldrid. She could see the emotion behind her father's eye. She did not like what Thor had said towards their father. She would have him apologize when they all returned to the palace. She needed her family to be whole again. And right now, it felt as if she was looking at a mirror, and the glass was breaking.
"I was a fool to think you were ready." Odin continues, Loki tries to step in but Odin silences his son is much harsher way than he did with Eldrid. The sons always knew Eldrid was treated differently than they were. Odin was always gentler with her, more kind. Whereas when he rebuked his sons, he was firm and harsh at times. When Loki backs himself away from Odin and stands back beside Eldrid, his arm wraps around her shoulder carefully. He hadn't even realized what he had done until she leaned into his embrace slightly. "Thor Odinson.... You have betrayed the express command of your king. Through your arrogance and stupidity, you've opened these peaceful realms and innocent lives to the harsh and desolation of war!" Odin snaps and Eldrid knows exactly what their father is doing when he puts his scepter into the keyhole, igniting the Bifrost.
"Father-!" Eldrid tries to stop him and get to her brother but Loki holds onto her, refusing to let her interfere. "Loki! Please!" She weeps, "You can't do this." She cries to her father.
When Odin steps down the stairs of the bifrost, he deliberately avoids making eye contact with his daughter, knowing what this was doing to her. But it had to be done. "You are unworthy of these realms!" Odin shouts as he strips Thor of his chest plate armor. "You are unworthy of your title!" He shouts as he rips Thor's cape from his shoulders. Stripping him of his colors. "You're unworthy! Of the love ones... you have betrayed." He whispers the last part to Thor as his blue eyes fall on his weeping sister. She still was struggling against Loki to reach Thor, to at the very least say goodbye.
"Brother!" Eldrid cries out towards Thor as tears fell from her eyes.
Their father backs away from Thor and stands back on the platform with his hand extended towards Thor. "I now take from you your power!" Odin says, Mjolnir flying into his hand. "In the name of my father and his father before," Eldrid watches as Thor's stripped of his chain link. "I, Odin Allfather, cast you out!" Odin shouts as he extends Mjolnir, breaking the rest of Thor's armor as he falls into the Bifrost.
"No!" Eldrid screams, trying so desperately to break free from Loki and run to her brother. She knows she can't stop her father's banishment, but she could give her brother company. She could help him. She knew she could.
Loki was stunned as well at the lengths their father took to punish Thor for what he did. He clung to Eldrid because he knew she would go after their brother and that was not something he wanted happening after just getting her back. No matter how strangled their relationship was.
"Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." Odin whispers into Mjolnir and then throws it into the Bifrost to follow Thor.
"Father-"
"It was necessary, my dear." Odin says despite feeling the loss of Thor as much as she is. "I know you are hurting, so we shall fetch Eir." He states, not wanting to speak on the matter of Thor anymore, "Loki, see to it that her arm is properly treated."
"Of course, Father." Loki says, his eyes going back and forth from the Bifrost, Odin and Eldird. "Come, El... What's done is done.." He says to her and he lifts her into his arms and teleports the two of them to the healers quarters to get her arm treated.
Surrounded by their friends, Loki stands behind where Eldrid sits on a sofa that encircles a large fire where the group recoups after the battle they had just faced. She yelps in pain as a healer places a cream on her arm. Loki's hand rests on her shoulder to try and comfort her. The two were still on rocky terms, not having a moment to talk since she had returned home. But they still cared for the other, and it was coming through more and more.
"We should never have let him go." Volstagg says, voicing what Eldrid was thinking.
"There was no stopping him." Sif reminds them all as she leans against the back of her own sofa, her eyes looking at Eldrid softly.
"Well, at least he's only banished, not dead." Fandral comments as Hogun paces around the fire. His wound was healing at a decent pace and he was grateful for the healers and Eir. "Which is what we'd all be if that guard hadn't told Odin where we'd gone." Fandral says and Eldrid looks over at her friend as she hisses in pain once more, the healer apologizing but continuing placing the cream and lotion on the burn.
Loki glances down at his hands that are on Eldrid's shoulders. He feels the need to pull himself away after what he uncovered on Jotunheim. But he knew that Eldrid would sense something was wrong, and he didn't want eyes on him at the moment.
"How did the guard even know?" Eldrid asks the group, trying to piece the night back together after witnessing her brother being banished and stripped of everything he had.
"I told him." Loki says and Eldrid's eyes widened in shock.
"What?" Fandral questions in shock.
"I told him to go to Odin after we'd left. He should be flogged for taking so long. We should have never reached Jotunheim." Loki defends his actions and Eldrid turns her head to look at her brother. His hands removing themselves from her was probably a smart option he made in that moment.
"You told the guard?" Eldrid questions, she was shocked and hurt. How could Loki do this and not tell anyone. She would've been fine had she just been told. But after Thor being banished, and now knowing Loki played a hand in it of some kind. It made her heart break that much more. The image of her family she had in her mind was breaking. It was shattering with every word Loki was saying.
"I saved your life, all of our lives... and Thor's." Loki says after a moment, watching Eldrid's reaction, knowing he was losing her all over again. "I had no idea Father would banish him for what he did." He defends himself, moreso to Eldrid. He knew her mind was adding things up, how his telling the guard played into Odin banishing Thor.
"Loki." Sif says as she stands from her seat. "You and Eldrid must go to the Allfather and convince him to change his mind." She pleads.
"And if i do, then what?" Loki asks, stepping towards Sif slightly. "El and I love Thor more dearly than any of you, but you know how he is." He reminds them all and he looks at his sister for a moment, "He's arrogant. He's reckless. He's dangerous. You saw how he was today. Fandral and El nearly died. Is that what Asgard needs from its King?" Loki snaps defensively towards the group and then storms out of the room to get air. It was getting to be too much, always being second to Thor.
"He may speak of the good of Asgard, but he's always been jealous of Thor." Sif says once a few minutes had passed since Loki left.
Eldrid wants to speak, she wants to defend both of her brothers, just as she always had done in the past. But now was different, times were different. And Thor had been right about one thing. Times were changing fast, things were moving at a rapid pace.
"We should be grateful to him, he saved our lives." Volstagg defends Loki in his absence.
"Loki would always save Eldrid." Fandral reminds Volstagg. "Thor and Loki both would give their lives for her without hesitation."
"Quite right." Volstagg responds and offers a gentle smile to the princess.
"Laufey said there were traitors in the House of Odin." Hogun says, speaking for the first time. Eldrid hesitates when she looks at Hogun, "A master of magic could bring three Jotuns to Asgard."
"You hold your tongue, Hogun." Eldrid snaps, hurt that any of them would think Loki would intentionally do harm to Asgard. "Loki has always been one for mischief, but you're talking about something else entirely." She says as she stands, "You are speaking of treason and i will not hear of it." She snaps calmly but firmly.
"We know this is your family, El... but think of the possibility." Sif says, trying to get El to sit back down so her arm can heal.
"No." Eldrid snaps, "I lost one brother today. I will not lose another one over rumors and theories." She says sternly. She loved her friends, but they had always been more Thor's than hers and Loki's. Sif had a crush on Thor since they were all teenagers and the Warriors Three saw Thor as a brother in arms. "This is the homecoming i get? This blasphemous talk of treason within my own family. Laufey lies." She says.
"All right." Fandral says, knowing it was time to stop the conversation before Eldrid got even more upset. He could see she was on the brink of collapse both emotionally and physically. Her emotions had been wrung out so harshly today. From witnessing her eldest brother nearly be crowned king, travelling to Jotunheim and fighting off Frost Giants, to watching Thor be banished to Midgard with no powers, no Mjolnir.
It had been a taxing day for the Princess of Asgard who just only returned home the previous day.
"I'm going to do the right thing." Eldrid states and stands in her under armour. Her armor no longer adorning her body. She stood in silver and blue tunic and pants. Her hair was still plaited from before they all had left for Jotunhiem.
"What would that be, Princess?" Volstagg asks cautiously. They all saw El was on edge, they didn't want her teetering any further.
"I'm going to find him and make sure my brother is okay." She states, storming out of the common room and casting a tracker spell to find her missing half. She hadn't wanted to admit it, but his touch soothed her, it calmed her when she needed it most. And now that he had left her, she was on the brink of falling into despair.
She needed her Romeo.
