IX. Frost Giants
When emerald eyes caught the sight of the sapphire eyes he had adored and cherished, his heart lurched in his chest as he held his mother's hand in the air just like Odin did with Loki's Angel. His throat closed up for a moment and he was stuck. Time had frozen in that instant for him as well as Eldrid. The time around them stood still as they took each other in. Their regal attire they both wore, how much they'd grown. They were looking everything over. Loki couldn't think of what to do next and his mind berated him for it. Thoughts clouded his mind, screaming at him that Eldrid didn't matter anymore, no more than she did when she was just his sister. She had abandoned him. She had ignored him, left him to wonder the worst. That to him, was the ultimate form of betrayal.
Sapphire met emerald and Eldrid quickly looked away in hopes of calming her racing heart. The action of her looking away from Loki only solidified the fact that she didn't care about him that way anymore. That her promises of eternal love were lies. She had tricked him into giving her his heart only for it to be stepped on.
"Loki?" Frigga whispers, "What has your attention, my son?" She asks innocently though she of all the thousands upon thousands of people surrounding them knows what captured his attention. It makes Loki puff out air as he regains his composure. He refused to let Eldrid being home again affect him.
"You know very well what has my attention, Mother. Do not play coy." Loki rebuttals and Frigga simply smirks and then smiles wide as they walk down the aisle. She waves at her people, as does Loki. He played the facade of a happy prince well in the eyes of the people. As he should, he had been perfecting the facade since he realized he would never be kind if his father had anything to say about it.
When they reach the stairs to the throne, Loki takes his place beside his sister and mother. Frigga stands on the very last step towards the throne while her children occupy the two steps below her in order of birth. She looks at her two children, she can see the turmoil hidden behind their eyes as they stand so close to each other without so much as a glance in the other's direction.
Eldrid was focused to make sure she would not look at her brother. For if she did, she would crumble from within. Her heart had turned cold towards love, but the one man who could thaw her heart, wanted nothing to do with her anymore.
Loki had made that extremely clear.
They both had made their stances on the matter of their hearts crystal clear without a single word uttered.
The crowds roared to life more than ever before as Thor entered the throne room. He cheered with them, causing them to grow in more excitement. He lifted Mjolnir high in the air proudly as he turned in slow circles, righling the crowd up more. He flipped Mjolnir high in the air and caught it. He laughed with glee and pride on his day of coronation.
Sif down the stairs a bit rolled her eyes at Thor's childishness and pride. "Oh, please." She whispered but Eldrid had caught it. The princess chuckled at her brother's antics. Frigga smiled softly as she watched her son make his grand entrance. Odin however, wasn't all that pleased at his eldest son's fanfare that he helped create more of. Thor lifted Mjolnir high in the air again and roared a victory cry towards his people and they cheered with him.
And when Thor finally reached the steps of the throne, he knelt before his father and removed his winged helmet. He set Mjolnir down as well, looking up at his mother and sister with a wide smile and a wink. Eldrid giggled softly while Frigga smirked and subtly shaking her head in an attempt to calm her son. The queen knew her son was like this, he adored the attention from the people. The praise he received was so satisfying to him. He craved more every time.
Odin stood from his throne and the crowd cheered louder, they knew what was going to happen the moment Odin stood. They cheered like they never had before. Thor turned towards his comrades the Warriors Three and smiled at them. His close friends smiling back. The sound of Odin slamming the butt of his spear on the ground once was enough for the crowd of thousands upon thousands of people in the throne room and just outside it to be silenced. This was the power held by the King of Asgard.
"Thor.... Odinson, my heir..." Odin begins his speech and Eldrid could feel Loki's annoyance internally at their father's words. She knew Loki wasn't happy that he wasn't even considered for king. Eldrid at first was a little hurt that Odin only ever saw Thor as his heir, but Eldrid made herself useful to the kingdom in other ways. Loki however, did not. "... my firstborn. So long entrusted with the mighty hammer Mjolnir, forged in the heart of a dying star, its power had no equal, as a weapon to destroy or as a tool to build." Odin states, Eldrid remembering Thor's letter when he was gifted Mjolnir, it was one of the letters she read from her brother that was delivered while she was sleeping. "Tis a fit companion for a king." Odin states with a nod of certainty. Eldrid looks at her brother without moving her head and sees the pride swelling in him from the words their father is saying to him. "I have defended Asgard and the lives of the innocent across the Nine Realms from the time of the great beginning. Though the day has come to relinquish my duty as king and protector and bestow it upon another." Odin states and then looks at his son as he grips his spear tighter. "Do you swear to guard the Nine Realms?" Odin asks, beginning the official handover of king.
"I swear." Thor responds with his own certainty. Protecting the Nine Realms was never something Eldrid thought her brother would not do. From the moment of her first memory with him, he was her protector. He was fiercely loyal, just like she was. She lived and breathed for Asgard and it's people. She and Thor both would die for Asgard without so much as a hesitation.
"And do you swear to preserve this peace?" Odin asks the second question.
"I swear." Thor responds, slightly louder than before. His lightning blue eyes looked at his sister and she smiled at him with a nod of her head. She had accepted the role of Advisor to the King when Thor wrote to her months ago before her return that he wanted her to aid him and be his most trusted advisor. With Eldrid's victory in Alfheim, there was no question as to who would help preserve the peace of Asgard and the Nine Realms.
"Do you swear..." Eldrid doesn't miss the slight hesitation in their father's voice, "to cast aside all selfish ambition and to pledge yourself only to the good of the Realms?" Odin asks. Loki glances at his brother, wondering how his response will go.
"I swear!" Thor shouts loudly, raising Mjolnir high in the air.
"Then, on this day, I, Odin Allfather, proclaim you..." Odin pauses just before he names Thor king. His eye widens slightly and Eldrid heistates, sensing the slight panic and shock within her father. "Frost Giants." Odin says after his long pause. Eldrid's eyes widen in fear as her feet stagger just barely. Odin slams his spear down on the ground, commanding the Destroyer from within the vault below the palace.
Eldrid's greatest fear was frost giants. The nightmares she had as a little girl still haunted her. Loki knew this. He knew everything there ever was to know about his sister. At least, he thought he did. He noticed her feet staggering on the step below him where she stood. But he watched as she composed herself as quickly as the panic had hit her.
The ceremony is cut short by the interruption of the Frost Giants within Asgard. The people are being dismissed as the royal siblings, and their father make their way down to the vault. Accompanied with guards, Eldrid conjured a sheathed sword on her hip that had become hers during her time on Alfheim. It shocked Loki though he would never show it on his face or body language. His child sister, the one that feared Frost Giants the most, was ready to fight them.
Eldrid gasped in shock as she took in the ice covered vault, the frozen dead bodies of the two guards. Odin walked ahead of everyone as his children flanked him, his sons on either side while his daughter directly behind him. She was surrounded by the men in her family that would lay down their lives for her.
Thor surveyed the frozen wasteland that was now the Vault with disgust. He was angry. He was furious. The bodies of the guards angered him. Eldrid broke from her father and brothers, confusing them as she walked over to the bodies of the soldiers. She waved her hand and her light blue magic covered both guards gently. "May you find peace in Valhalla." She blesses them, her brothers watching her with wide eyes. They had a lot to learn about her time on Alfheim. Loki could feel the Elven magic cover the bodies of the guards and he knew she had learned and gained more magic prowess during her centuries on the elven realm.
After Eldrid steps back into formation between her brothers and behind her father, Thor speaks. "The Jotuns must pay for what they've done!" He shouts angrily.
Loki watches his father as Odin looks over the Casket of Ancient Winters. "They have paid, with their lives." He states simply.
"The Destroyer did its work." Eldrid speaks to her brother. Odin nodded in agreement.
"The Casket is safe, and all is well." Odin states to his sons and daughter. He saw no reason to disrupt the peace even more.
But Eldrid knew her brother did not think that was the case. "All is well?" Thor mocks in question. "They broke into the weapons vault! If the Frost Giants had stolen even one of these relics-"
"But they didn't." Odin cuts Thor off mid rant. Eldrid can see it only makes Thor more enraged. Her brother didn't like to be cut off in conversation, he was so used to being the interrupter.
"Well, I want to know why!" Thor shouts angrily.
Loki, who had been quiet all this time, looks at his brother with semi wide eyes and then looks back at their father. "I have a truce with Laufey, King of the Jotuns. A truce your sister updated during her time on Alfheim." Odin points out and it stuns both sons, their eyes falling on their sister who simply stands behind her father with a slight smirk of pride her father clearly had in his daughter.
"Well..." Thor pauses, not wanting to offend his sister, "He just broke your truce!" He shouts, picking up speed again in his words. "They know you are vulnerable!" Thor exclaims, indicating Odin's eventual Odinsleep and the shift of control of the Nine Realms. Coronations were always risky, neighboring kingdoms saw switches of power as power grabs. The new king not having been king very long if at all while the previous king having stepped down or died. It was a gap in the respect of the old king and the new king not having earned the trust and respect yet.
Odin turns towards his children slowly and looks at his eldest. "What action would you take?" He calmly asks.
"March into Jotunheim as you once did. Teach them a lesson. Break their spirits, so they never dare to cross our borders again." Thor states clearly.
Eldrid cringes visually on her face as she glances at their father. Fighting was not always the answer to everything. In Eldrid's case, fighting never happened because she never had it come to that. Everything outside of the attempted assassination that had nearly killed her, everything on Alfheim was done peacefully.
"You're thinking as a warrior, Brother." Eldrid says calmly.
Thor narrows his eyes, "This was an act of war!" He shouts at not only his sister but their father as well.
"It was an act of but a few, doomed to fail." Odin snaps at his son.
Thor motions with his arm the deaths of the guards and the ice around the entire vault. "Look how far they got!" He shouts, upset, causing Eldrid to jump at her brother's tone of voice.
"We will find the breach in our defenses and it will be sealed." Odin states simply. He was tired of the conversation that he knew would go nowhere. He and Eldrid were of the same mind when it came to discussions like this most days. Eldrid knew there was nothing more they could do with what they had been observing. The Casket was safe, the breech in defenses would be taken care of. And the Frost Giants that had infiltrated were now dead.
"As King of Asgard-" Thor begins, but before Eldrid can stop her brother from lashing out, their father beats her to it. Which isn't the best thing that could've happened.
"But you're not king!" Odin snaps, yelling at his son and cutting him off. Eldrid jumps in shock at her father raising his voice. Never once had she heard his voice be raised when he was addressing his family. She knew then that Odin was officially done with the conversation and topic of a foolish war with Jotunheim. "Not yet." Odin says a bit more calmly.
Thor has no more words, his mouth shutting from speaking more and his eyes harden with embarrassment and anger. Their father leaves them in the wake of his outburst to shut his son up.
Once Odin has left the Vault, Thor turns on his sister. "How could you betray me!" He shouts in anger. "You are to be my advisor! Not Father's confidant!" He snaps, he was seething at this point and Eldrid stares her brother down.
"A war with Jotunheim is not the way about this, Brother. I am advising you." Eldrid quips back. "You see through the eyes of a warrior, not a king." She snaps calmly. Loki could hear the bite in his sister's words towards their brother. He had never seen either sibling act this way towards each other. It was new and Loki didn't know quite how to feel about this tension. He didn't know just yet if he could use it in his favor.
"Then i do not wish for your advice any longer." Thor snaps as he storms out of the vault, taking off his cape in the process. The ceremony had been long cut short and with the outburst by Thor towards his father, he knew there was no way that he would be king anymore.
