IV. Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow

Loki broke away first, though he didn't want to. He was stunned and at a loss for words as his emerald eyes took in the sight of the woman before him. The woman who also happened to be his younger sister. He watched as Eldrid slowly opened her eyes, her breathing was uneven as she caught herself. She felt as if she was soaring through the sky like her father's ravens. And she was happy.

Until her sapphire eyes laid upon Loki's emerald eyes and saw the fear in his eyes. The shock of what had just happened between them.

"I-" Loki stammers. For once, he had nothing to say, the Silver Tongue was silent. And it scared Eldrid to think he regretted it. But she had asked him to do it, to prove his love was more than sibling. She was confused, she was ecstatic, she was hurt.

"If you say you regret it, i will slap you." Eldrid snaps at him as Loki sits up in her bed and puts his elbows on his knees, his head in his hands. She could tell his mind was racing a million miles a second trying to figure out what had just transpired.

His green eyes widen in shock and fear and his head snaps to look at Eldrid, "No!" He shouts and then cringes at the loudness of his voice. Eldrid leans against the backboard of her bed and crosses her arms. The look on her face told Loki he needed to explain his reaction, and fast. "It was... It was rash of me to do that... But.. I do not regret it." He states and Eldrid raises an eyebrow. But his smile slowly spreads on his face as he looks at her, "My only regret... is that i did not do it sooner." He says and Eldrid's eyes widen.

"Wh- What?" Eldrid stammers, taken aback by the fact that Loki through the words he said, indicated that he had wanted to kiss her many more times before. "Loki..." she mumbles, her turn for being at a loss for words.

"I know, I know the timing is horrid. That you are leaving tomorrow. But if i did not do it now, it would have never happened, i firmly believe." He states with every ounce he has within him. Now that it was out for Eldrid to hear, Loki needed everything he had been holding back to be heard. He needed her to know how he felt before she left for who knew how long. Because something that worried both of them was that Eldrid had no ending date to this mission. She would be on Alfheim however long it was needed for her to create peace, and to maintain that said peace.

"Then explain it, Loki... please. Because if what i'm hearing is not what you mean... my heart will never repair itself." Eldrid says and Loki's eyes snap upwards and see his sister on the verge of tears. The very thought of her love not being reciprocated was heartbreaking to her. And Loki would not stand for tears falling from her sapphire blue eyes that he adored.

He scrambled to sit beside her, pulling her into his arms. He felt emboldened to be more affectionate with her now that his feelings towards her were in the open between them. "Gods no, El." He swears to her his hands cupping her cheeks and making her look up at him as his head leaned over her slightly. He pulled her as closely as he could into his arms, he held her as if he would never be able to again. "I mean every word. I have meant every touch, every subtle smile that was only ever for you. Every word i have spoken, my unspoken devotion to you." He tells her as he looks at her deeply, "It has all been for you and only you." He breathes out as his forehead rests on hers. At his words, his undying love for her, Eldrid can't help but break down into tears, it scares Loki senseless until he sees her smiling along with her tears. "Are.. these tears good?" He asks.

Eldrid laughs softly and nods through her tears as she looks up at him, pulling her forehead away slightly from his to look up at him. "Yes, Loki. These tears are good." She says to him and he breathes a sigh of relief. "I never thought..." She stops as she catching her breath as Loki holds her close. Eldrid finally holding him back, her head resting on his shoulder. "I had put this ever happening aside... thinking it would always just be in my mind... just a childhood fantasy i had held onto for so long."

Loki hesitated at Eldrid words. Had she been harboring feelings for him all this time just as he did? "A childhood fantasy?" He asks curiously as he draws her eyes back up to his as they continue to sit on her bed.

Eldrid nods slowly as she moves to wipe her cheeks but Loki beats her to it. His thumbs wiping away the tears that escape her eyes which only makes her cry more. "I have loved you, Loki Odinson, since you learned your first spell and showed it to me. Because of you, i wanted to learn magic from Mother. You helped shape who i am today and you didn't even realize it." Eldrid tells him as she reaches up with her hand and caresses his cheek. He smiles as he leans into her touch.

"So, as it turns out, we both have loved each other for many years. And neither of us thought to see if the other felt the same." Loki says with a laugh, "Because, i have loved you, since we hid from Thor in the tree in Mother's gardens... reading that book she gave us." He says as he lays them down with Eldrid's back laying on her bed and him hovering over her. Eldrid smiles softly as she looks over his facial features. The way he was looking at her, watching her, it was mesmerizing. The way his hand caressed the back of her head and brought it upwards slowly. "I want to kiss you again.." He mutters softly as his eyes trail down to her lips. He had a small taste and he was becoming greedy.

"Then do it, my love." Eldrid says and Loki's breathing hitches as he looks at her and stops his movements. All thoughts about kissing her again are gone as he collapses himself onto her slowly. His head resting on her shoulder as her arms wrapped around him. Her fingers moved through his hair slowly, her nails gently scratching the back of his head. He was in Valhalla, Loki had died and gone to Valhalla.

"Call me that again." Loki mumbles as he kisses her cheek.

Eldrid giggles and it's angelic to Loki's ears. He cannot get enough of the woman his heart had chosen to love and cherish. "My love." Eldrid whispers to him. Loki lulls his head onto the pillow beside him dramatically as he groans in happiness and Eldrid giggles again at his antics. "You like that?" She asks even though she knows the answer.

Loki sits up and presses his forehead against hers with a smile as he closes his eyes in bliss. "I adore it." He whispers and Eldrid smiles back at him as her eyes close. "Just as i adore you." Loki says. "But i do not have a name for you." He points out with a pout.

Eldrid smiles as she shifts on her bed and rests herself on Loki. Her arm draping over his chest, her fingers moving over the open part of his shirt that exposed his chest. "I do not need one." She tells him simply but Loki disagrees.

"I disagree." He tells her flatly. "If i have one, then so shall you."

El glances upwards at Loki, seeing him looking down at her with his hand resting underneath his head and a smile on his face. Both of them were still in shock, still reeling from the revelations that had happened between them. "When you look at me, what do you think of?" She asks, trying to help him.

Loki huffs as he begins to think, "My mind stops functioning. My heart stops at the sight of your beauty. I cannot think straight until you have spoken, and even then i am entranced by your voice. It is angelic and calming to listen to." He lists off and then pauses, "You are my angel." He whispers, the nickname slipping off his tongue with ease and joy, "My salvation because surely if you were not by my side, I would crumble."

Eldrid chuckled softly as her nails trailed his chest, "Is that what i am then? Your angel?" She asks and Loki nods with pride. "I'm sure if i was not living, you would be who you are now regardless." She points out, but Loki isn't too sure. He had a reason to live because of Eldird, and not just to live in his brother's shadow. If El wasn't alive, he would be a much angrier man than he is.

"You are my angel..." Loki whispers as he kisses her cheek and behind her ear, causing El to smile and blush. "My rose." He mumbles and Eldrid smiles as he trails kisses on her shoulder and arm. "My delicate rose who can still injure people if they doubt her." He teases and El giggles as he continues to showcase his love to her. Finally being able to do so.

"We cannot tell anyone, can we, my love?" Eldrid asks softly and Loki sighs, being brought back to reality with his beloved's question. And he knew she was right. He knew no one could know about them because it wasn't customary for siblings to be in a courtship together.

"One person already knows no matter what, angel." Loki says and Eldrid nods in agreement. Only one person knew about their relationship and they didn't know what he would do with the information. Would he take it to Odin? He was bound by his loyalty and duty to the throne to inform the Allfather of anything that could disrupt his rule.

"Heimdall is a kind and good friend, my love." Eldrid reminds Loki, "He has watched us grow up. If anything, he has known longer than we have and said nothing." She points out and Loki ponders the notion.

He nods slowly and then looks at Eldrid with a small smile. "Mother should know." Loki says and Eldrid nods in agreement. If they tried to keep anything from Frigga it would end in failure. The Queen knew the ins and outs of what went on in the palace more than Odin did. "I will tell her after you have departed to Alfheim." He states.

Eldrid nods slowly as her eyes close in bliss as Loki runs his fingers through her long blonde hair. Her head lulling to sleep on his chest was everything Loki needed for his heart to be complete. And it wasn't long before the prince fell asleep alongside his beloved.

When the two awoke, they thought everything that happened during the night was a dream. But seeing the other beside them proved it was no dream. That what happened was very much real. And they were finally living out their fantasy and longing.

Loki woke up first, he was normally the first to wake because he enjoyed watching the sun rise in the distance while he read a book on the connecting balcony to his chambers. But today, he was reading to his angel. Which he always enjoyed doing, but it meant more than just reading aloud to his sister now.

"But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That thou her maid art far more fair than she:
Be not her maid, since she is envious;
Her vestal livery is but sick and green
And none but fools do wear it; cast it off.
It is my lady, O, it is my love!
O, that she knew she were!" Loki reads aloud a scene of a new play he had found on Midgard not too long before. His arm is wrapped around Eldrid as she blinks her eyes open. She smiled softly as she looked at the bindings of the book, seeing they were Midgardian. She chuckled breathlessly because she knew Loki often liked to visit Midgard to see what new discoveries and creations they had made. He enjoyed watching the plays in London as new ones were written and performed.

"What is this one, my love?" Eldrid asks, still ridding her body of sleep as she lounged herself on her beloved's chest. Just enjoying the sunlight flowing through her curtains and the breeze on her skin as Loki smiled down at Eldrid.

"It's from this new author on Midgard, ah... Shakespeare, i believe." Loki responds and then glances back at the small book in between his fingers, "Do you like it?" He asks.

Eldrid nods as she snuggles into Loki's side, "Do continue reading, I quite enjoyed it."

Loki smiles and kisses the top of her head, "As you wish, angel." He states and then looks back at his book and begins to read aloud once more. "She speaks yet she says nothing: what of that?
Her eye discourses; I will answer it.
I am too bold, 'tis not to me she speaks:
Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven,
Having some business, do entreat her eyes
To twinkle in their spheres till they return.
What if her eyes were there, they in her head?
The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars,
As daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven
Would through the airy region stream so bright
That birds would sing and think it were not night.
See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
O, that I were a glove upon that hand,
That I might touch that cheek!" Loki continues and Eldrid sighs with a smile.

"That's awfully romantic." She teases and Loki chuckles.

"It is, isn't it?" Loki says with a smile as he continues more. "It is a conversation between a man and woman, they have fallen in love but cannot be together unless they hide it from their families."

"Why do they need to hide it?" Eldrid asks curiously.

"Their families despise each other. Should they speak of their love aloud, it would cause a war between the families." Loki explains, "It rather reminds me of us." He says.

Eldrid sighs with a nod as she agrees. "Perhaps not in the same context, but our love is hidden as well. It is forbidden."

Loki nods in agreement, "It is our precious secret." He says and then flips a few pages to the end of the scene and smiles softly, "Ah, the ending of this scene, seems to fit us well." He says with a chuckle, "The man is departing from his woman's balcony floor and she must retire for the night." He says, "And this is their farwell exchange." Loki states as he then begins to read the parting aloud, "It is my soul that calls upon my name:
How silver-sweet sound lovers' tongues by night,
Like softest music to attending ears!

Romeo!

My dear?

At what o'clock to-morrow
Shall I send to thee?

At the hour of nine.

I will not fail: 'tis twenty years till then.
I have forgot why I did call thee back.

Let me stand here till thou remember it.

I shall forget, to have thee still stand there,
Remembering how I love thy company.

And I'll still stay, to have thee still forget,
Forgetting any other home but this.

'Tis almost morning; I would have thee gone:
And yet no further than a wanton's bird;
Who lets it hop a little from her hand,
Like a poor prisoner in his twisted gyves,
And with a silk thread plucks it back again,
So loving-jealous of his liberty.

I would I were thy bird.

Sweet, so would I:
Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing.
Good night, good night! parting is such
sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow." Loki concludes the scene he was reading and Eldrid sits up slowly and looks at him.

"Parting is such sweet sorrow." Eldrid mutters as Loki sits up to cup her cheek.

"That I shall say good night till it be morrow." Loki replies and leans in slowly, his lips pressing to her own as their minds prepare for El's departure within the next several hours of the morning.
