Chapter Ten

(DISCLAIMER: All characters and the whole Harry Potter franchise - except for Jeremiah Hallysworn, Mallory Evans, Alice Urie [plus a few other more characters I haven't decided to get into the story yet] - belong to none other than J. K. Rowling)

"What reason could you possibly have to meet up at a time like this?" Alice was overly irritated at his choice of time. Out of all possible times to summon, it just had to be midnight. But in order to avoid abhorrence, Alice chose to speak in a nonchalant voice she had managed to do successfully without struggle. She wouldn't want anyone wanting to kill her by the time she wanted to fall into slumber.

"We all have our reasons in doing what we do." His voice echoed as he stared at the ring that adorned his finger, uninterested.

The glow casted by Alice's wand shined upon his face, causing much of it to gleam in the light.

Alice fully noticed his features and for a split second, her mind went back to what happened just a few hours ago. She immediately put her shields down. She knew Tom Riddle wasn't trying to do anything and that it was her own mind which did it, but it was evident that if he noticed just so much as her out of it, she was sure he'd probably raid her mind.

And at that, her expression became a look of horror and Tom Riddle definitely noticed it. As soon as he did, he raised an intrigued eyebrow.

Alice's expression became one that was pained and then to a sullen one.

There was short silence between them. The boy was looking at her as she to the side and avoided meeting his eyes.

"State your reason then," Alice said, straining her voice in order to avoid making known whatever emotion she just felt.

"Not until you tell me what you just thought about." He quickly responded.

Of all things to ask, Alice snided.

Before she could answer, the boy started to pace infront of the vacant wall. Alice observed his actions and noticed his eyebrows were furrowed.
After the third time he paced across the front of the wall, familliar carvings started materializing and Alice thought when ever was he able to discover this room? But immediately, she mentally slapped herself for asking such a foolish question. He'd been a student here for five years already, and she had only been here for merely one and a half months. Of course he would have the time to discover unfamiliar parts of tbe castle! He manages his schedule without a flaw - or so it seems to Alice.

The doors opened and Tom went inside, looking to Alice for a moment as a sign of beckoning. She entered without hesitation and followed quetly.

When she looked around, the room was much different that how she'd seen the inside last time. She thought back to how it was: a room, with torches to help illuminate it, which looked like it could serve as some training. Right now, it was very much dissimilar. The walls had a dark but comfortable scene; there was an arm chair (no doubt Tom Riddle sat there to scheme about), and a table just in front of it, followed by the fireplace at the wall's surface.

Typical, Alice chimed to herself within her mind. Just as how I could figure how someone as seemingly classy as him would think up.

He sat down on the armchair an faced the now lit - by curtesy of Tom Riddle himself- fireplace and stared into the flames. "Speak."

Alice did not hesitate now. "The fact that I just kissed someone who I barely had feelings for," she decided to be horribly honest for once. She knew that Riddle was not someone she should be telling this about. She hadn't even told Mallory! It was unlike her to be reckless in her choices. It's not like that kiss meant anything positive for Alice. She never planned on being in such relationships. She thought it just really wasn't for her.

"Plus the fact that it was my first, and the fact that I'm willingly telling you right now- it's absurd." Alice let a hand go through the top of her hair, pulling a bit at the roots. She laughed humorlessly before shaking her head and smiling, it wasn't a genuine one.

It showed the fact that she was pissed. She was pissed at the fact she was the one who had to do it. She was pissed at the fact she had to cause pain unknowingly. She was pissed that she had to do something so draining for something she was unaware of. She didn't mean to do it, but she really did go for the betterment of others. Alice was kind, even to a fault. And look where it got her now, pissed and messed up at her head. She was confused all around.

She shook her head again before composing herself once more. "One question down, two more to go." She muttered bitterly.

Tom Riddle was still staring at her, unmoving but looking at her with curious eyes.

"Tell me the reason, Riddle. Your word," Alice demanded.

Tom's eyes went back to that cold stare she was used to seeing.

"I've been watching you for a few weeks now, Urie." Alice wanted to say something so sassy he'd probably not talk to her until the end of forever and a day. "That wasn't creepy at all," Alice wanted to say.

She tilted her head as a signal for him to continue.

"And I've decided that I would offer you some sort of position. I have formed a-"

"Society of people helping each other out in getting their egos bigger? Well, I'd be surprised if you haven't," Alice sassed. Jeremiah's sass was rubbing onto her and she couldn't tell if it was a good thing or a bad one.

This caused the brown-eyed boy to glare at her. So much for not wanting to cause aversion. But the glare wasn't just any that he usually sends her. It was a glare that someone would give another when he or she would want to kill. The thirsty type of hatred was what he had right now.

"A society wherein we establish the Mudbloods in their place and show them who the superiors are," he boomed sounding absolutely furious.

"As much as I dislike the proposition and acceptance to the suggestion from Malfoy himself, it occurs to me that you are indeed," he gulped and hesitated, "of great intelligence and much more power than my companions combined."

The way he said it was strained and Alice thought at first that if this was how Tom Riddle tried to flatter a woman, he would never have a wife to look to in the far future.

Alice stared at the now cool and calmed Tom Riddle despite having him inflate with annoyance not just a moment ago made her wonder if there was some sort of switch in his mind. If Alice were younger and much less inexperienced, she would probably recoiled in fear and avoided talking to the boy all over, but that wasn't the case. She was used to being frightened, it always happened to her at least once a month ever since the incident. The flashing images of the face of her brother's killer wasn't something she looked forward to.

"And where exactly do I come into this?" she asked, genuinely confused. Surely, as Tom Riddle himself would probably state, he would do great on his own. He just needed some people to start with is all. She couldn't see the possible place for her to appear in his plans to go through with abomination. She couldn't care less - as always.

At her words, he suppressed a sneer, "You could be of great help for me in this."

Alice rolled her eyes. Cocky, too cocky for my liking, Alice thought. Let's see how cockiness handles sass then. "What makes you think I would even waste a second in trying to consider your quote-on-quote 'offer'? Seriously, Mr. Tom  Riddle, this past week of monitoring me, haven't you noticed I'm picky? Well, I'm sure you do understand where this is coming from, especially since you carry a similar attitude?"

If Jeremiah was here, Alice began, a slight smile wanting to get on her face, he'd scream out "Shots fired! You need some water for that burn?" But Jeremiah's not here and she'd rather not think about him right now, given the circumstances.

The Riddle boy just stared at her with a deadly silence and with a glare she was all too familiar with.

"Because I know you will," his glare slowly turned into a look of menace as he smirked.

Alice only stared at him, neither making a move to deny him or confirm his thoughts. I swear this boy will be the death of me. Cocky, arrogant, full of himself, now that was a much familiar description to Alice already. Everyone either hated him, or loved him, or didn't even know about him - which in this case is impossible, but we never truly know -  and there was no in between. Except, maybe, Alice who didn't feel as much hatred and as much admiration towards the boy much like everybody else. Alice knew deep down that she despised him and he infuriated her without fail, but it was the way she worked and was not one to fully dwell on these things.

"Why am I not surprised?" She muttered quietly but knew that Tom heard. She saw him from the corner of her eye roll his eyes. Did he just roll his eyes? It couldn't possible be, no. It wouldn't seem to be him.

She was surprised when he started talking once more. "I saw you come here. Your eyes were swollen and looked as if you could've killed someone. Why?"

"Why are you so persistent? It barely has any importance to me, how can it be important to you? And I know that you, of all people, would know that you yourself don't really care about anyone else now, do you?" Alice managed with a much restrained voice. The bump was slowly forming in her mouth which caused her to bear difficulty in speech.

Alice knew she had spoken out a very raw opinion, but she couldn't care less, now. It had been spoken and nothing could really take it back. And she definitely knew, this was just for inflating the other person's head. It wasn't going to deflate it, no, but Alice plans that someday, she would inflate his head until it is as big as the sun itself, and explode causing bits of his head guts raining all over.

Alice smirked at that thought and Tom Riddle wasn't able to catch that. We all knew she would be sadistic at times, but this time, she was especially happy to have thought of that.

The boy smirked at her, unaware of Alice's own smugness, and he spoke in his voice with such charisma as he reverted his face back to false innocence, "I was simply curious. Is it such a heinous crime to just want to know? And in addition to that, it was a question and you need to answer it."

"It's a hefty crime to be quite nosy at times. Although, I can manage through this one. If I ever make it alive, that is," Alice's velvety voice now sounded quite icy and sarcastic, just the way Tom Riddle had spoken to her once.

"If you have nothing more to say, I might as well go," she muttered, feeing much more out of it than when she entered the room.

"No, no, there really isn't much more to say. But I am wanting to know, who  is this 'Brendon'?" He questioned further with an all knowing smirk.

Here he was again, he was taunting her, trying to trigger something.

Alice's gaze turned visibly grim without subtlety. She glared at him so darkly, it set Tom off for a moment.

She needed to answer him, if she didn't, he might ask something worse. But then again, what was worse a question than the ones he asked her?

She needed to, what harm would it bring her? So much.

"Are you sure about those questions, Mr. Tom Riddle?" She said ominously. Too ominous for what Tom would usually be used to hearing.

"Of course," he tried not to waver and show any signs of being affected but failed as it was evident in the way his voice slightly shook.

"I cried because I had to. I cried because I just did. No further explanation." Alice spoke, her voice void of emotion. But as she realized she had to answer the other one as well, it dawned upon her that she would never be able to answer it.

"Brendon is . . ." she trailed off, unsure whether she'd like to continue or not.

"What is he to you?" Tom followed up impatiently.

"Brendon is nothing," she said with her voice hoarse and unbecoming.

"Oh?" The boy infront of her taunted with a pretentious innocent and questioning tone.

She was fuming now, in annoyance, that is. She was infuriated beyond reason. She couldn't be blamed. This boy in front of her was the one to have the blame upon him.

"Brendon is nothing," she muttered quietly, in contrast to her body slight shakingand her magic starting to flow a bit. "Nothing but everything," she said before disappearing with a 'crack!'
