Amelia stopped in front of a red door, all of her searching had lead her here. To the place that it all started. Right on this front porch was where the very same picture was took. She sighed hard and went up the porch steps and knocked.
The door swung open and a young woman stood there, around twenty, just a few years older than Amelia.
She took a big breath for courage, "Do you know who Evelyn is?"
The woman looked at her surprised and then said. "Please come in."
A few minutes later, Amelia sat on the couch facing the woman, a pot of tea set on the coffee table.
"Tell me how you found out about her." She said.
Amelia pulled out the photograph. "This is how. I found this in my attic."
The woman carefully took the photo from Amelia and peered at it. Her face seemed to transform from surprise to recognition. She looked from Amelia back to the photo. "Ahh, it all makes sense now. You are the doppelgänger."
"What?" Amelia had expected her to say many different things but not that.
She laughed. "Oh sweetie, I sound crazy right now, but just listen. Once upon a time, there was Morria. She was the most powerful enchantress to ever grace our earth, but she died, burned alive by a dragon. That dragon is still alive in the magical world and all of the creatures live in fear of Streätislo, that's the dragon. Ever since, there has been a doppelgänger of Morria, their life goal is to one day slay Streätislo. Every single one has failed and died. You are the doppelgänger. Evelyn was tasked to take care of the doppelgängers when they were kids, as she was a fae creature and immortal, but it went wrong. The baby in that photo was the last doppelgänger, Nellie. She and Evelyn set out to kill the dragon. They never came back."
"Huh?" Amelia sat back in utter shock, that was never in any realm of possibility what she thought the lady would say.
The woman laughed again, the sound was like tiny bells ringing. "I know you're confused, I have been searching for you your entire life, and you ended up finding me. And I haven't even began talking about the powers."
Amelia blinked. "Powers." Then she burst out laughing. "Of course. I'm going crazy, or maybe you're the crazy one, I don't know." She got up to leave.
Suddenly a force hit her and she slammed into the couch. The woman was standing up, hand forward, palm facing her. Some sort of electric blue energy fizzed through the room. Her eyes glowed bright blue.
"You cannot go anywhere. Lives are at stake, I have to train you so one day you will beat Streätislo." Her voice came out warbled and weird.
Then her eyes returned to normal, and the energy disappeared. Amelia was no liger pressed to the couch.
"We have much to discuss, as well as stuff we have to do, so you disappear off the earth." The woman, sat down and poured them each a cup of tea. "Here. Drink up."
Amelia hesitantly took a sip, it was delicious. She saw the woman drink it all in a gulp, she did the same.
"Good, all finished." The cup was taken out of her hand by nothing and set on the table.
Her mouth gaped open as the same thing happened with the lady's.
"I believe we still have not been properly introduced. My name is Catherine. And yours?" The woman said.
"My name is Amelia." She said softly.
"Lovely, nice to meet you Amelia. Come along." Catherine walked briskly down a hallway, leading to a room at the very end. "You will live in this house, just as every doppelgänger has. We will also have to stage a fake death for you, you cannot have any earthly attachments. It will be sad, especially for your parents. But it needs to be done."
"Um, my parents died, in a car crash, a year ago. That's why I found the photo, it was in there attic. But why?" Amelia asked.
"Oh, darling, I am sorry for your loss, no one should have to lose parents that young. But what do you mean why? Why did your parents die? I don't know, the universe is cruel sometimes." Catherine pulled a key out of her pocket.
"No, why was the photo in my attic, Evelyn wasn't related to me and neither was Nellie. There was no reason for it to be in my attic." Amelia explained.
"When fae die in battle, they don't really die, they merely become will-o-wisps. Evelyn has probably been guiding you your entire life, this photo was meant to lead you to me." Catherine put the key in the lock. "All of this is important, but first we should get training."
She threw open the door and beyond it lay a garden, it was full of lush vines and flowers, trees that stood tall, flitting butterflies and birds. It was paradise.
"How do you keep this hidden from neighbors?" Amelia asked. "Simple spells." Replied Catherine.
Catherine turned to her. "We are going to unlock your powers now, I don't know exactly what they are but just follow my instructions. Think of a color, any that immediately comes to mind, they make a room, in your mind. Paint it that color, now put your most precious memory in that room." Amelia followed her instructions. Yellow was the color that came to mind so she painted it yellow, inside she put a memory of her and her parents, having a family game day. "Now feel that memory in your heart and release it."
Amelia felt her parents laughs and joy. She released it feeling her grief and love. Power thrummed in the air, pink exploded, it was electrical and bright. Behind her powers and strength she felt all of the other doppelgängers, their memories, pain, and victory. She knew she would never stop fighting until she died. For Catherine, for Evelyn, for Morria, and for Nellie.
