First Snow

I'd like to say I'm an enchantress in a glittering gown. Standing at the foot of my castle, I raise my wand to call forth the snow.

The truth is, I'm an enchantress of molded plastic, no taller than your pinky fingernail. All is dark in my glass ball, and no snow falls.

Just then, my world begins to shake. Trembling, I brandish my wand fiercely.

A little girl is lifting my world from the darkness. She turns it upside-down--and beams.

The first snow I've known is falling gently from the sky! Today, my painted smile becomes real.
