chapter twenty two
Homecoming was supposed to be a fun event, but it sadly turned into a complete nightmare when Gwen Grayson's true identity as Royal Pain was exposed.
The woman formerly known as Sue Tenny had been relegated to being a sidekick due to the fact that many people underestimated the power of being a sidekick, perceiving it as something insignificant.
Driven by a deep anger and resentment for being constantly belittled, Sue Tenny, now operating as Royal Pain, devised a sinister plan using her invention, the Pacifier. She aimed to destroy Sky High and transform it into an academy for aspiring supervillains, using her device to turn them into infants and raise them as wicked villains. However, fate had other plans and her scheme ultimately backfired, leading to her downfall at the hands of the Strongholds.
At the moment of Royal Pain's defeat, the assumption was that she had been obliterated by the blast, unaware that she had actually been transformed into a baby and subsequently raised by the cunning Stitches. The once malevolent supervillain was reborn as the familiar Gwen Grayson they all knew and loathed.
Gwen's malevolent scheme remained unchanged, intent on repeating the same destructive history. As students transformed and babies began to fill the Gymnasium, Cassidy found herself in a precarious situation, separated from the others and held captive by Gwen herself.
Cassidy, having anticipated the transformation into an infant like the others, was taken aback when Gwen didn't attempt to use the Pacifier on her. Instead, Gwen was focused on working with Stitches, loading the transformed babies into their car seats without taking any notice of Cassidy's presence.
Cassidy, feeling slightly awkward and out of place, gathered the courage to speak up, "Is there a reason why you haven't turned me into an infant, like the others?" she asked hesitantly.
Gwen's voice echoed through the room as she approached Cassidy, making her instinctively flinch. The older female retracted her mask, a thoughtful expression on her face as she spoke. "You know, I've always been intrigued by you, Cassidy Crane," Gwen said, her footsteps deliberate as she moved closer. "Perhaps it's because I see traces of your parents in you."
"Wait, what?" Cassidy spun around, her eyes widening as she watched Gwen smirk, stopping in front of Will's dad, Steven.
As she lifted Steven into her arms, Gwen continued, "I wish I could have told you this sooner, you know. That your parents were exceptionally kind to me, even though I ended up as a sidekick, the two of them truly attempted to convince the administration that I deserved more than that."
Gwen's voice grew quieter, laced with a hint of melancholy as she spoke, "I truly wish I had more time with them," she mused. "But since they were a couple of years older, I only had the opportunity to spend my first two years here at Sky High. Those first two years were, at least, bearable due to your parents, who made me feel accepted."
Gwen cast a glance downward at the infant in her arms, her expression a mix of frustration and bitterness. "But then, the moment they graduated—Steven, being the arrogant fool he was, had decided to use me as a pawn to gain favor with the ever-popular Josie," she grumbled. "Josie also joined in the harassment, adding to my misery."
Cassidy's shoulders drooped as she listened to Gwen's past, or rather, Sue Tenny's story. The revelations about Gwen's difficult past gave Cassidy a newfound understanding of the older girl's troubled soul.
Gwen sneered as she posed a question to Cassidy, her words dripping with a hint of sarcasm. "So, tell me, Cassidy, are you going to become the voice of reason and insist that I didn't have to stoop so low?"
Gwen paused, awaiting Cassidy's verdict. Inside, a small part of her hoped that the girl would offer some harsh words that might just sway her from her nefarious plans. Perhaps, deep down, the presence of the voice of her old friends' daughter would awaken a flicker of rationality within her.
"I can't be that voice," Cassidy admitted, her voice laced with a tinge of regret as she lowered her head. "Our experiences differ significantly. I am bullied for my lineage, while you were targeted due to the underestimation of your powers. Our situations aren't comparable—we've walked very different paths. I've been fortunate to have people who care about me, but you, from what you've said, had my parents for a short time and no one else."
Cassidy then lifted her gaze, gazing into Gwen's eyes steadily.
"I don't think what you're doing is right," Cassidy asserted gently. "But I'm not capable of altering your perspective, Gwen. I'm not my parents who were there for you; I am simply me—a complete stranger unable to fully comprehend or empathize with your decision."
Cassidy's voice softened as she continued, "The only sympathy I can offer is knowing that you're on a path of revenge that can only be consoled by yourself."
Gwen clenched her teeth in frustration, turning away from Cassidy. She yearned to argue, to lash out and force her point across, but the girl's words held such wisdom that it left her momentarily speechless. She couldn't refute Cassidy's argument because it was grounded in the hard truth.
Gwen shouted out to Stitches, her voice tinged with annoyance. "Stitches, are you done loading the infants?!"
Without waiting for a response, Gwen walked away, leaving Cassidy behind without issuing any threats or delving any deeper into their conversation.
