chapter sixteen
Cassidy chuckled softly as she turned to attend to her tasks at the counter. Glancing over, she couldn't help but notice Warren massaging his shoulder, the result of being thrown during Save the Citizen in PE earlier in the day.
During the game, Warren had teamed up with Will Stronghold, and they had emerged victorious against Lash and Speed. While they had secured the win, Warren was now paying the price, as his sore muscles served as a reminder of the rough treatment he had endured while catching the citizen earlier.
Cassidy turned to Warren, her concern evident, and asked him, "Why are you so against using ice? It would probably help ease some of the soreness from the throw."
Warren rolled his eyes and let out a sarcastic laugh, aware that using ice simply wasn't a viable option for him due to his pyrokinetic abilities. "Why do you always ask me that?" he responded with a hint of frustration. "You know I can't even use ice without melting it within seconds."
Warren leaned back in his chair, groaning softly as he acknowledged her comment.
"You are enjoying this way too much," he muttered under his breath.
Cassidy chuckled, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she replied, "I am."
She leaned against the counter in front of him, a knowing smile on her face. "But I can't help but notice that even with your dislike for Stronghold, the two of you made quite the team when you saved the citizen in class earlier."
Warren crossed his arms, a mixture of irritation and stubbornness etched across his face.
"And that is where you lost me," he stated firmly, his voice devoid of any room for argument. "Not in this lifetime, never happening."
Cassidy stood up straight, a mischievous grin on her face. She pointed her thumb over her shoulder and chimed in, "His friend is still here, you know."
Glancing over, Warren caught sight of the girl who was always seen with Will and his friends. Lately, since Will had been classified as a superhero, he had seemingly been consumed by the attention from Gwen and her posse.
Warren couldn't help but chuckle, recalling the time Cassidy had ranted about this very topic during their ride back home.
Warren furrowed his brow, slightly annoyed by her huffing.
"And tell me," he inquired, his voice tinged with irritation. "What does venting to me about that accomplish, hm?"
Cassidy crossed her arms, clearly miffed by his apparent lack of interest. "Well, Mr. Smarty Pants," she retorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I did rant to you about the unfairness, but it seems you've been letting it go in one ear and out the other, haven't you?"
Warren smirked, slightly amused by her feisty nature.
"Whoa, relax a bit there, Ms. Feisty," he joked, raising his hands defensively. "Just want to remind you that I'm not a mind reader, you know"
Cassidy rolled her eyes, trying to rein in her frustration. "Mind reading has nothing to do with this, honestly" she retorted. "I just guess you're not the best at picking up hints, huh?"
"Hey, hold on now," Warren protested, his expression becoming mildly defensive.
Cassidy suggested, "I'd try to talk to her myself, but she gets all flustered around me. Maybe you could join me?"
Warren raised a skeptical eyebrow. "What makes you think she won't just run away if we both approach her?" he pointed out. "Do you realize that this is like adding fuel to the fire, right?"
"Hey, listen," Cassidy retorted, her tone turning a bit more snarky. "I knew you could be dense, but I didn't think you were this thick-witted."
Warren's eyebrows furrowed, a bewildered expression on his face. "Huh?" he responded, clearly caught off guard.
Cassidy admitted sheepishly, her voice quiet. "I'm downplaying my embarrassment by asking you to join me because I'm not exactly the best at conversing with others. It's not my strong suit."
Warren couldn't help but chuckle at her words, and he reached out and placed his hand on top of her head, gently ruffling her hair.
"Cass, you could have just asked," he teased, a hint of mocking in his tone.
Cassidy huffed in frustration as she pushed his hand away. "Don't push it, Peace," she grumbled, crossing her arms.
Warren smirked and, without waiting for her, he began to walk away.
"Hey, wait!" Cassidy protested, realizing his intention.
Warren chuckled and called over his shoulder, "Weren't you the one who wanted to approach her? Or was I just imagining things?"
Cassidy clenched her jaw, still feeling annoyed at his smugness, but nonetheless followed him.
"Yeah, yeah, I get it alright" She grumbled as she caught up to him, giving him a light smack on the back as she passed.
