Chapter 4
Flamekit yawned and looked around. The other six kits were nowhere in sight. He huffed when he realised the kits had left him without waking him up. This was their first time allowed outside the nursery!
It might be all the better, Flamekit thought, It would make me look more important.
He groomed his pelt for a bit, then stalked out of the nursery into the camp.
"Hey sleepyhead, you awake at last?" Flamekit ducked his head, feeling his pelt burning.
He felt a pelt brush against his lightly, followed by a laugh. Flamekit recognised the voice of the pretty calico she-kit, Fennelkit. He looked up, saw Fennelkit's warm smile and sky-blue eyes and grinned. "Let's play!"
All morning they tussled around, annoyed warriors and listened to the elders' stories. Flamekit heard a story about a leader called Firestar. He was amazed by how he saved the clans from the Dark Forest and delivered Skyclan from the grasp of being forgotten and killed. Now Skyclan lived with the other 5 clans in the forest.
Suddenly, a loud yowl cut across the clearing. "Let all cats old enough to hunt gather below the Thunder Rock (I know it's supposed to be the High Ledge, but I changed it because the clans had another great journey) for a clan meeting!" Oakstar boomed, standing proudly on the Thunder Rock. His pelt gleamed in the sunshine, and muscles rippled under his white and brown pelt. Flamekit looked up, fur fluffed with excitement. One day I'm going to be like that! he thought.
He looked around. What's that meeting for? he wondered, bounding as quickly as his little legs could take him to the nursery. He found his answer there. Mudkit, Goldkit, Lightkit and Weaslekit were gasping with excitement, tail held high and proud. It's their apprentice ceremony! Flamekit thought excitedly, running towards them. "Make sure to teach me some moves!" he squeaked, tripping over his own paws in excitement. Lightkit, Weaslekit and Goldkit all purred and nodded, but Mudkit snorted and said under his breath, "Kits!" Flamekit flattened his eares and retorted, "You are still a kit!" Goldkit frowned and nudged Mudkit.
"There's no need to be rude, Mudkit. You were like that when Rabbitpaw and his litter mates became apprentices! You were bouncing around and asking questions." Goldkit mewed. Mudkit pouted and stalked away towards the Thunder Rock. Goldkit sighed and followed Mudkit, shooting an apologetic look towards Flamekit. Flamekit walked towards Sparrowheart, tail dragging behind him.
"What's the matter, Flamekit?" Flamekit heard a friendly voice behind him, and swirled around. He saw Firesoul, the tom that brought Mountainclan into the forest. He, Flamekit, Lightningkit, and Sparrowheart looked so alike that Flamekit thought it strange that they were not kin. He told Firesoul, "I asked Mudkit and his littermates to teach me some moves after they learned it, and Goldkit, Lightkit, and Weaselkit were nice, but Mudkit was mean and said that I am a kit. I mean I am a kit, but he wasn't made an apprentice yet and he already sounds like he was a grumpy elder already!"
Firesoul tilted his head, thinking for a moment. Flamekit felt happy that the great warrior respect him and even thinks about him! Firesoul said, "Maybe I'll speak to whoever-will-be-Mudkit's-mentor and tell him/her to make Mudkit stay in camp and do apprentice duties while his littermates go to hunt." Flamekit twitched his whiskers in amusement, he could already imagine Mudkit's look of fury when he will be told this.
"Mudkit, you have reached the apprenticing age of six moons. Until you're ready to become a warrior, you will be known as Mudpaw. You will be an apprentice. Your mentor will be Cloudfeather." Oakstar meowed. He then turned to Cloudfeather. "Cloudfeather, you are ready to take on an apprentice. Berrywing," Oakstar closed his eyes a few moments, "she hunts with Starclan now, but she had taught you well. I hope that you will pass your wisdom and skills down to Mudpaw." Mudpaw touched noses with Cloudfeather, the warrior's eyes were filled with determination and excitement.
"Goldkit, you have reached the age of six moons and are ready to become an apprentice. Until you're ready to become a warrior, you will be known as Goldpaw. Your mentor will be Larkwing. Larkwing, you have taught Bramblefur well and I trust you to pass down your skills to Goldpaw." Goldpaw touched noses with Larkwing excitedly.
"Lightkit, you have reached the age of six moons and are ready to became an apprentice. Until you're a warrior you will be known as Lightpaw. Your mentor will be Sparrowheart." Flamekit's eyes widened with surprise as Lightpaw touched noses with his father. Lightpaw's eyes was glowing with pride at being the apprentice of the clan deputy. "Sparrowheart, you are ready to take on another apprentice. You have trained Silentsong well. She is now one of our greatest hunter and fighter." Silentsong looked surprised at the sudden praise, but quickly started purring.
"Weaslekit, you have reached the age of six moons and are ready to be an apprentice. Until you are named a warrior, you will be known as Weaslepaw. Your mentor will be Pumpkinheart." Weaslepaw eagerly touched noses with Pumpkinheart. The brown and white tom had recently developed a friendship with the ginger warrior. "Pumpkinheart, you are ready to take on an apprentice. Whiteclaw had taught you well."
Thunderclan merrily cheered for the new apprentices. "Mudpaw! Goldpaw! Lightpaw! Weaslepaw! Mudpaw! Goldpaw! Lightpaw! Weaslepaw!"
Oakstar waited for the cheering to die down. Then he said, "I still have one more ceremony to perform." He looked down with pride at his clan. "Moonpaw, Blackpaw and Rabbitpaw, please step forward." The siblings looked incredulous, but they climbed onto the Thunder Rock nonetheless. "I, Oakstar, leader of Thunderclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon these three apprentices. They had trained hard to follow your noble cade and I ask you to make them warriors in return." Oakstar turned to Sharpear, Moonpaw's mentor. "Sharpear, is Moonpaw ready to become a warrior?" he asked. Sharpear nodded without hesitation.
"Moonpaw was born ready," he said, blue eyes flashing with pride.
"Moonpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and protect your clan, even at the cost of your life?" Oakstar asked.
"I do." Nobody could've doubted the determination in Moonpaw's voice.
"Then, I give you your warrior name! Moonpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Moonshimmer. Starclan honours your determination and kindness. You will be welcomed into Thunderclan as a full warrior!" Oakstar boomed.
Oakstar placed his muzzle onto Moonshimmer's forehead and Moonshimmer licked Oakstar's shoulder.
Oakstar then turned to Woodflower, Blackpaw's mentor. "Woodflower, is Blackpaw ready to become a warrior?" he asked.
The brown she-cat nodded her head. "Blackpaw couldn't be readier."
Oakstar looked directly into Blackpaw's amber eyes. "Blackpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and protect your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do." Blackpaw mewed with pride.
Oakstar continued. "Then, I give you your warrior name! Blackpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Blackrain. You will be welcomed into Thunderclan as a full warrior!" Blackrain and Oakstar then did the series of movements the same as Moonshimmer and Oakstar did.
Rabbitpaw became Rabbitflame and the clan cheered for the new warriors. (XD cause I'm too lazy to write another long paragraph for Rabbitflame's ceremony.)
Flamekit watched as Mudpaw, Goldpaw, Lightpaw and Weaslepaw bound eagerly to their mentors after Firesoul had done talking to Cloudfeather. Then, he twitched his whiskers in amusement as he watched Mudpaw's look of utter disgust, fury and surprise when he heard that his siblings will be going into the forest while he will be stuck in camp removing ticks from the elders.
Then, Mudpaw dragged himself to the medicine den to get the mouse bile for the ticks. He was glaring daggers at Flamekit. He found out, Flamekit thought.
Flamekit felt a paw poke his flank. He turned and saw Frostkit looking at the new warriors in awe. Rabbitflame, Blackrain and Moonshimmer were preparing for their vigils as it was already dawn. The setting sun casted an orange hue on everything. The new warriors' muscles rippled under their pelts and they held their tails and heads high. They're really warriors, thought Flamekit, even though he had barely spoken to any of them, he respected them and thought that the warriors are noble and loyal. They really deserved their warrior names.
