Chapter 12-memories of a walk in the woods.
Walking back to the fortress, Firefly found herself looking back in the direction that she had just come from as Nerozika glanced at her.
"Something on your mind?" She asked the fire demon.
"That demon..she acted like she's known me her entire life -yet before today, I've never even heard of her," Firefly replied, looking back at her.
"From the short time I saw her, I could sense that -like you- she wasn't originally a demon -but rather a human," said Nerozika
"Her name is Hexra, she acted as if I had cursed her myself," commented Firefly.
"Hmmm, I got an idea," Nerozika mused.
Firefly stopped walking and looked over at Nerozika with a confused look.
"What do you mean?"
Nerozika stopped herself as she turned to look at Firefly, "Since you used to be a human and she was too...I don't think it's such a bad idea to think that she could be someone from your past."
Firefly narrowed her eyes, "What are you suggesting then?"
"Though it's not well known; I have a...power that'll allow both of us to see one's memories, especially forgotten ones," said Nerozika.
Firefly tilted her head, "and you'd use it to help me figure out who she was?" she asked her.
Nerozika nodded.
"Well..normally, I wouldn't enjoy a being who is virtually immune to even chaos magic peeking around my mind, but I think I'll allow this once," replied Firefly.
Nerozika gave a small smirk at the comment as she said,"alright let's find out just who she is."
She then proceeded to gently place both her hands on the side of Firefly's head and stared directly into her eyes. Firefly felt a pulling sensation as Nerozika's eyes began to glow blue. A sudden white light filled Firefly's vision.
------------------------------------
Firefly opened her eyes and found herself standing in the center of what seemed to be a human village and an old one at that.
"This...doesn't make sense," she said to herself.
"No I don't think it would, considering it's been hundreds of years since you've last been here.." said Nerozika. She seemingly appeared out of nowhere beside her, causing Firefly to jump slightly.
"You mean..this was my home?" asked the Fire-demon.
Nerozika nodded, "Yes. but this seems to be the wrong date and time so let's take a trip back shall we?"
She snapped her fingers and the scene quickly changed; it switched forms, back into what seemed to be the village in its prime, with a glistening bright sun over partly cloudy skies and a nice crisp temperature that spoke of a nice fall morning.
Various villagers began to mill about, working through their daily routines and lives. Firefly took notice of a small group of children running out from behind a small shed, laughing as they did so seeming to be in some form of a game.
"Can't catch me!" said a brown-haired girl as she ducked under a log that was being lifted by a rope and crane -much to the user's annoyance.
"Flora, get back here you're too fast it ain't fair!" said another black-haired girl who was behind her by a couple of feet.
Suddenly, the girl ducked to the left and turned towards Firefly and Nerozika, the former blinking in surprise.
"uhhh-Nero-this is an illusion right-?" said Firefly, hoping to not become an obstacle in the little girl who looked to be merely twelve in total's path.
"yep," she replied.
"So..she won't hit me?" asked Firefly glancing at her.
Nerozika shook her head.
"No, this is merely a memory we can see them as well as obviously hear them, but we cannot feel or touch them in any way, meanwhile we might as well not exist to them," explained the Queen of the void.
Firefly nodded in understanding as she watched the group of children run straight through her and Nerozika; it felt weird to have someone run straight through her as she got a closer look at this "Flora" and began to suspect something.
"What is it?" asked Nerozika
"Something about her seems..familiar..." she muttered slowly, then it clicked in her head.
Skinny body.
Long Hair.
Out-spoken personality.
Fast.
And something about the way the light danced around in her eye's.
The letter F
"Flora"
"Firefly"
She blinked then took in her breath, she had nearly forgotten.
This "Flora" wasn't just similar to her.
Flora WAS her.
This must have been when Firefly was still a human.
She was initially a human, who was raised in a village in the year...1861 was it? In someplace close to an ocean, she started to faintly remember some people calling it "Poland" or something like that.
As she took in more of the scene, she felt -for the first time in years- a speck of genuine human emotion, as her eyes were glued to the scene in front of her.
The children had finally stopped their game of tag, as some of their parents began to call them to their houses, so they could finish getting ready.
"I've got a feeling this may take a while so should we skip forward for a bit?" asked Nerozika glancing at Firefly
Firefly looked down for a moment before nodding, "..alright continue."
The scene blurred in front of them and changed from a sunny day to a dark and cloudy afternoon that promised thunder and rain to come soon enough.
The group of children was together again; this time playing tag in the outskirts of the woods. Before long they had switched to another game some-game called "Hide-and-Seek".
A new girl was with them this time, a shy girl from the looks of it with dark black hair that reached to her lower back; and she wore a light grey dress that seemed to suggest she came from a poor background. She had joined the group of children, not speaking much and more nodding timidly than anything else.
Eventually, it was Firefly-Flora's turn to "seek" and find everyone who was hiding.
"Come on out Hanna-I'm gonna find you~!" said little Firefly as she peeked around a bush and then a tree.
The new girl must have been "Hanna" Firefly figured as the girl giggled as Firefly tried to find her in vain.
After five more minutes of searching, Hanna suddenly let out a yelp.
The rest of the members of the group looked up in surprise as the tree's began to rustle.
"Demon!" Hana exclaimed.
Firefly tilted her head "Demon?" she echoed, then spotted movement in the bushes and felt her pupils slide into slits.
A demonic aura reached her senses as she identified the species of demons.
She hadn't met this kinda species many times, but they were identified as "Yag-ma's".
A species of demons closely related to the ninth plains soul snatchers; they were formless demons who had a nasty habit of stealing humans from the mortal realms -especially younger ones such as children and forcing them to convert into demonic beings themselves.
The Yag-ma made a straight run at Hanna and before Hanna could even react, a ghostly hand reached out and grabbed her by the neck. Flora ran to help Hanna but was knocked aside by a "tail" of sorts that shot out of its form and knocked her away. As she sat up to reach for Hanna's hand, the Yag'ma pulled Hanna into its body. it vanished into the woods before anything could be done.
When the children returned home covered in scratches and bruises and tearfully explained what had occurred, the disappearance was marked as a tragedy and then life began to go back to normal.
Firefly then knew without a doubt just who Hexra was.
"Hexra...Hanna...I'm sorry"
