Chapter 9
You
I found Hazel at one of the benches near the beach, where she'd said to meet her on the note. She was fiddling with her cinnamon hair, and looked distressed. She breathed out a sigh-relief or annoyance, I'm not sure- and turned to me.
"I thought you wouldn't come," she admitted. "I've been waiting for a while."
"Well, I'm here now," I said. "There was something you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Yeah," she said, looking at her lap. "I feel like I can trust you. You can't tell anyone."
"You can trust me," I confirmed. "I won't tell anyone without your permission.
She took a deep breath. "Thank you, Y/N," she said. "So the thing is, I've been hearing voices in my head. And my demigod dreams are getting weirder than usual."
"What are they about?" I asked. "Who's voice-or voices- does it sound like?"
"It sounds like Lady Hecate," Hazel admitted. "The dreams are rather fuzzy, but I think she was telling me to join an army of some sort. I don't know. It's scary."
I nodded, understanding the feeling of not knowing something. I had that feeling every time I had homework or a test. "Hecate. An army. Doesn't ring a bell. Don't worry," I added, seeing Hazel's scared expression. "I'm sure there's an explanation. " I patted her shoulder. "It'll be fine, okay? If there's anything else, tell me. I'll do whatever I can to try and help. I promise."
Hazel didn't reply, but she smiled at me. I really did want to help her in any way.
-Time skip brought to you by Kronos. Run for your lives!-
At dinner, everyone was murmuring unsettlingly, maybe some new rumor. Couldn't have been a good one, I decided, looking at how nervously the campers passed the information around.
I found out from the one and only Nico di Angelo, son of Hades.
I wasn't paying attention walking to my table. I was thinking about the prophecy yesterday, what Hazel had said, and this apparent new rumor, and I bumped into someone walking to the Poseidon table.
"Sorry, sorry, I'm so sorry," I muttered, looking at the person. "Hey. You're Nico di Angelo, son of... Hades, right?"
"Yeah," Nico said. "You're Percy's sister. Y/N?"
"Ding ding ding," I said.
Just then I noticed another boy, this one taller with big blue eyes, blond hair, freckles, and a playful smile. He was pretty cute. "Hi," he said, extending his hand for me to shake. "I'm Will. Will Solace. I'm Nico's boyfriend. Son of Apollo." I liked how he said he was Nico's boyfriend before saying he was a son of Apollo.
"I'm Y/N, daughter of Poseidon," I said, accepting his hand. It was warm and soft.
Another person joined our little group, this time a girl with ginger hair, camouflage, and green highlights. She whispered something into Will's ear. His blue eyes widened. "Are you sure, Kayla?" The girl nodded. "Oh, boy. Leo's not gonna be happy," Will said. Right at that moment, someone shouted Kayla and Will's names. She looked at me, smiled, and said quickly, "Kayla. Daughter of Apollo. Nice to meet you. Can't chat. Bye!" She ran off in the direction of the person who had called to her. She seemed friendly.
"What did Kayla say?" Nico asked Will, echoing my thoughts.
Will whispered the answer into Nico's ear, then darted off in the same direction Kayla had gone.
"What did Will say?" I asked Nico.
Nico seemed on edge. "He-he said Leo and Calypso broke up, and now she's gone."
I barely contained my gasp. Yes, I'd known they broke up, which was good for me because I had an itty-bitty (well, maybe not that small) crush on him, but that Calypso ran away? "When exactly did Calypso disappear?"
"Around this morning, during the counselor meeting, we think," Nico replied. "Listen, I gotta go. It was nice meeting you." He didn't offer me his hand but just ran off, the ghost of a smile on his face (pun intended, sorry not sorry).
I sat down with Percy as usual. He'd seen my conversation with Will and Nico.
"Nico sure warmed up to you pretty fast," he said.
"What?"
"What I said. He's not exactly the social type. Either you're radiating some friendly aura, or it's Will. I think it's Will."
"Wow, thanks," I said. "What happened in the counselor meeting?"
His face darkened, and I had the feeling I shouldn't have asked. He answered anyway.
"Not much. The prophecy said a challenge was going to happen, items lost, a bond strengthened, blah, blah, blah, so we have to wait until it unfolds by itself. Even though I'm really sick of it."
He took a bite of his pizza.
Okay. So I had to wait until some prophecy unfolded. In the meantime, maybe I could actually become friends with Leo without having to worry about Calypso getting mad.
-Time Skip brought to you by my laziness and eagerness to get to the action-
That night, I had my first-ever demigod dream.
Not an achievement worth a certificate.
It went like this.
I was in a dark room. I saw silhouettes of two women, deep in conversation.
"And you're sure you can have her trained in time?" asked the first woman.
"Yes, my lady," replied the second. "She is merely weakened, that's all. The silliness potion has worn off, and it has done it's job; the boy has broken up with her. Medea will convince her to join us. By the time her charmspeak wears off, she'll see that our sorceress army is more powerful than she thinks, and she'll be better off with us than she is with the losing side of this new war at that silly demigod camp."
"You must train her well, Circe," said the first woman. "If she is not ready for the stealing of the first treasure in three days, Pasiphaë can still be in the leading trio. Calypso can be another one in our army. I've recruited as many sorceresses and other magician folk into our cause, including my son, Alabaster. I am still trying to get into touch with Hazel Levesque. She refuses to even consider my offers."
"We can have her taken into custody, my lady," said the woman who must've been Circe. Circe, Circe, Circe... think, Y/N, think! Circe was an evil sorceress, yes! Yes, Percy beat her! Yes, its all coming back now!
Circe continued talking. "We can treat her however you want us to until she joins our cause. Medea can give her a potion. We can do anything. We have to win this war, my lady."
What did Hazel have to do with this? She'd mentioned a voice in her head, telling her to join an...army... she mentioned thinking it was Hecate. Hecate, Circe, Medea, Calypso, Pasiphaë... all powerful sorceresses and the magic goddess who gave them this magic...an army of magicians...silly demigod camps...Oh. My. Gods.
I bolted up in bed in a cold sweat, gasping, not because the dream had been scary, but from pure realization. My head hurt, and I was dimly aware of Percy calling my name.
"Y/N! Y/N, are you okay? Are you hurt? Did you have a bad dream?" He completely fussed over me, which would've been nice if I wasn't so terrified. I told Percy everything, and about my thoughts, which had a 90% chance of being true.
He chewed his lip. "We need to tell Chiron," he said at the same time I said, "I need to tell Hazel."
"What does Hazel have to do with this?" He asked.
I didn't want to tell him. I'd told Hazek I wouldn't tell anyone without her permission. But I had to, to help Hazel. "Hecate's trying to get Hazel to join her. I have to tell Hazel so that she can resist. We have to prepare the camp. A godly item is about to get lost. We need a trio, if I'm correct, to look for it. We already have a prophecy, so no prophecy for that mini-quest, right?"
He nodded slowly, taking it all in. "Yeah. I don't like it, but yeah, Y/N, I think you're right."
