A crooked path

At Steep Wisdom was the ninja making traps for ghosts, incase they came for the sword. "There. That should keep customers away." Zane said as he put up a sign saying, 'Closed for renovations.' Kaya put some water buckets over a door. "More like fortifications. If Morro and his ghouls show up here looking to steal the sword of sanctuary, they won't know what hit them." She said while Cole walked out of the shop with an umbrella, just incase.

"Looking good. Just gotta be careful around here for now. I for one would like to stick around long enough for Misako and Sensei to figure out the last clue." He said and Kaya nodded. "We got Cyclon-Do, we got the sword, now they just have to figure out where the tomb of the first spinjitzu master is." Jay said while Kaya jumped down. "Let's hope they figure it out soon. I don't know how long we'll be able to hold out." She commented.

Inside was Misako and Wu trying to decipher the last symbol. "We know the skull represents his tomb." Wu pointed out and Misako sighed. "But from everything that was ever written about it, there's nothing in Ninjago that matches its description. Where is it? The clues are all right here, but what are we missing?" She complained as Wu put a hand on her shoulder. "We mustn't give up. If Morro finds it first and takes the realm crystal, I'd hate to think what would happen next." The two smiled at eachother.

Suddenly something stepped on the tripwire, setting of a bell that alerted everyone. "The early-detection warning system." Misako said as she and Wu headed outside. "Intruder!" Kaya exclaimed and Jay nodded. "Let him have it. Pull soldier!" He turned towards Pyther that had a military helmet on, giving a salute. "Yes sir!" With that, he used a catapult to shoot water balloons towards the intruder. But it was just the postman who groaned. "No wonder you're going out of business." He hissed before handing Kaya a letter and left with an annoyed expression.

"No, you're the one going out of business. Heh, who sends letters anymore?" Jay said while Kaya read the letter, letting out a small sigh. "Guys, he's right. It says he's gonna shut us down unless we drum up some business." The others gasped a little. "Well, don't tell Ronin. If this place is worthless, he won't stick around and we need all the help we can get. Come on, we're gonna need more water balloons." Cole told them before they continued.

Ronin was cleaning R.E.X. in the meantime while whistling. Suddenly he saw Nya trying to control some water while Selena was meditating. "Come on, Nya. Become the water, reverse the flow." Nya said to herself, but the drops wouldn't go upwards, making her groan. "Ugh! Stupid water!" Ronin chuckled and walked up to them. "Giving up already?" He asked and Nya scoffed. "Course not. Sensei thinks if I get over my fear of failure, I'll be able to control the water. Sure, I made it rain when I wasn't even paying attention, but here I can't seem to stop a single drop. Ugh." Selena sighed and looked at her.

"You're trying too hard." Ronin nodded in agreement. "She's right. Wanna know about failure, should've asked me. Heck, I made a career out of it. Word of advice. Don't try so hard. You can't fail if you don't care." Nya looked at them in shock. "Don't try? What sort of backwards advice is that? Of course I'm gonna try hard. That's how one excels and-" Selena interupted her. "Nya! Trying to hard is bad. You focus to much and stiff up. But if you relax and just go with the flow. It'll go smoothly." She smiled gently before Ronin smirked at something behind Nya. "Speaking of backwards..." Nya and Selena turned around to see the water going backwards.

"Oh my gosh! I'm doing it. I'm really doing it!" Nya exclaimed and Selena smiled. "I told you." Ronin chuckled. "Like I said, don't care so much. Usually when someone wants something too badly, they'll trip over their own feet." He said before heading back to his ship, when he suddenly froze. It was Bansha who used her powers to send him a message. "Can he hear you?" Morro asked and Bansha nodded. "Oh, he can hear me." She informed and Morro grinned. "Tell him it's time to pay his debt. Tell him to bring me the sword." Bansha nodded with a grin.

Later, Ronin tried to find the sword, when the others soon came into the shop. "Thanks for gathering on short notice." Misako said before Kaya saw Ronin. "Looking for something?" She asked and Ronin smiled nervously. "Ha, just making sure the tea blends are in alphabetical order. Yup, A to Z, heh." But both Selena and Nya looked at him suspiciously. "So you figured out where the tomb is?" Jay asked Misako who shook her head. "Not yet, but we think we know how to locate it. Zane?" Zane nodded before his falcon projected the last symbol, a skull.

"To bring you up to date, the skull symbol refers to the tomb's entrance." Misako informed and Wu nodded. "We also know my father's resting site, where the realm crystal resides, is protected by three deadly tests designed to keep anyone unworthy away, and only the sword of sanctuary can see past its riddles." The ninja nodded while also wondering. "Yeah, but where is it?" Cole asked. "We started to wonder if the scroll and sword combined held a secret. That's when Kaya reminded us that there was a map on the back of the scroll." Misako answered and Kaya nodded.

"And if you use the sword on the map, the blade's reflection will reveal the tomb's location." She finished, making the others nod understandingly. "Which means we'll have to get our hands on that map." Cole said while Ronin snuck away to the shed. He saw the sword case and opened it, seeing the sword. But as he reached for it, it disappeared in purple smoke. "What the!?" Suddenly he heard a familiar voice. "Looking for something?" He turned to see Nya and Selena standing by the door, Nya holding the sword. "Something about what you said stuck with us." Nya said while pointing the sword at him.

Ronin gulped a little. "Oh, yeah. And what's that?" He asked. "That you don't care. If you don't, why are you here? Sure, this tea shop could potentially help you pay off your debt in time. Or, you could speed things up by just giving them the sword in return for your cursed soul." Nya answered and Selena nodded. "Sacrificing other's souls for yours. Can't let that go unpunished." She said and activated her magic. "So, where does that leave us?" Ronin asked and Nya held up the sword. "I don't need the sword to tell me where this is going." They started to fight eachother.

Selena tried using her powers, but Ronin knocked her against the wall. "I need that sword. I don't wanna have to hurt you." He told Nya who glared at him. "You know, I was thinking the same thing." She suddenly saw Ronin's reflection kissing her. Her eyes widened before she kicked him back. "Aah! What did I do to deserve that?" He groaned and Nya glared at him more. "You know what you were about to do." She hissed before Ronin used a rake to make her fall, making her grunt. "Like I said, try too hard and you'll trip over yourself." Ronin said sadly and ran off with the sword. "He's getting away with the sword!" Nya exclaimed and the ninja quickly surrounded him.

"Huh? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. We can do this the easy way or the hard way." He nervously said before throwing a rock at the traps, setting them off at the ninja who got distracted, Cole trying to avoid the water. "Haha! That was way too easy!" Ronin chuckled before heading inside the shop where Wu and Misako was waiting. "We're not gonna let you get away!" Misako said before they started to fight. But Ronin dodged every attack thanks to the sword, soon slicing some herbs to make a dust cloud that distracted Wu and Misako. "Oh, now that's a nice blend. We should fight more often." He said and ran off, grabbing a small bottle of some tea.

As he was almost at R.E.X., Selena jumped infront of him. "Give me that sword!" She demanded as she made walls of magic around them, leaving Ronin without an escape. "I say, you've trapped me. Or yourself." Ronin said, confusing Selena. That's when he suddenly threw the tea at her feet so it broke, making it's smell fly into her nose. Selena suddenly felt heavy and tired, her magic walls weakening. "Sleepy tea. Perfect to fall asleep." Ronin said before Selena fell to the ground, completely asleep.

Soon he summoned R.E.X. and the ninja saw him flying away. "He's getting away. To the Bounty!" Kaya exclaimed before she and the others headed to the Bounty, Wu smirked. "Are we sure that's the wisest choice?" He said and summoned his dragon before holding out his hand towards Misako. "Care for a ride?" Misako smiled and jumped on. "I thought you'd never ask." She said before they chased after Ronin. Nya meanwhile was by the river and looked at her reflection with a sigh before standing up to leave. When she suddenly heard Ronin's whistle and turned to see him in a small boat. "Stop!" She exclaimed and chased after him, while Ronin just scoffed. "Yeah, right." He said without any worry. "Why are you doing this?" Nya asked with a mad tone. "You know why. Giving Morro the sword is the only thing that'll save me." Ronin answered and Nya groaned. "He'll never hold up his end of the bargain. You can't trust him." But Ronin sighed.

"I have to. It's my only shot." Soon Nya stopped and looked at the water. "Become the water. Become the water. Become the water." She took a deep breath before slowly making the water go backwards. "Reverse the flow, Nya!" Ronin's eyes widened. "You got to be kidding me." He soon shifted his sail, making the wind take him forward. Nya soon lost her focus and fell to the ground exhausted. "Face it, Nya. You're not strong enough. You care too much. I'm sorry, Nya. I wish it never had to come to this." Ronin sadly said as Nya clenched her fists in rage.

Ronin soon arrived at Morro's hideout and looked around. "Good evening." Morro said as he and the other ghosts appeared. "Heh, I like what you've done with the place. Pretty gusty making your hideout right here in Stiix. With this much water, they'd never come looking for you here." Ronin said with a hint of fear in his voice. "I've never been afraid of anything." Morro said while Ghoultar looked at the sword. "The sword is no fake." He said and handed Morro the sword. "Huh. For once, the crook makes good." With a laugh, he stabbed the sword into the airjitzu scroll, revealing the tomb's location. "Ha! The tomb of the first spinjitzu master." Ronin coughed a little.

"Now what about my soul? The deal was that Specteria would remove the curse and free me." Morro grinned. "You can have your soul, but our queen have changed the deal. She wants the ninja too." He said and Ronin's eyes widened. "Whoa, now hold on. A deal's a deal, but what do you care about the ninja? I thought you said you weren't afraid of them." He pointed out and Morro chuckled. "I'm not. But our queen requires certain...safeguards." The other ghosts laughed with him as Ronin clenched his fists. "Forget it. I'll keep my cursed soul. The sword's one thing but my friends are another." He tried to leave, but dark green chains appeared from the ground that kept him in place. "Our queen says otherwise." Soul Archer said as Morro walked up to Morro. "Where do you think you're going? We still have a need for you. The realm crystal will be mine." He grinned while Ronin growled.

The others meet up at Steep Wisdom, felling angry and betrayed. "Well, obviously he's taken the sword to Morro." Jay said and Zane sighed. "But where's Morro? He could be anywhere." Nya walked up to them with Selena right behind her. "I'm sorry. I should've told you when I first suspected Ronin would steal it." She said sadly and Kaya put a hand on her shoulder. "You did everything you could. It's not your fault at all." Pyther nodded and hugged her. "We don't blame you at all. We all got tricked." Nya smiled a little and hugged him back.

"Exactly. We all knew the path to save Lloyd was never going to be a straight line. We were all fooled by Ronin, but that doesn't make us fools. At a time like this, we mustn't butt heads, but put our heads together." Wu informed and Selena sighed. "If only we knew where they were." Suddenly Zane's falcon squawked before projecting a message from Ronin. "I can't talk loud, but I wanted to let you know, Nya, you were right. Morro didn't hold his end of the bargain. And Misako was right too. The scroll and sword did reveal the tomb. I know where it's located. I know you don't have the sword, but I know you can beat them to the tomb." He said before gasping.

"They're coming." Jay glared at him. "Where is it? Where's the tomb?" Ronin turned to them. "The caves of despair! The tomb is in caves of despair!" The message soon got cut, leaving the others in shock. "Caves of despair? We've been there. I don't remember seeing any tomb." Wu said while Misako thought a little. "But there are still miles of unexplored mines. It could be there." Nya shook her head. "But why should we believe him? It could be a trap." Selena nodded in agreement. "I agree. Something was odd about him." The others just looked at them.

Kaya sighed a little. "We don't have the scroll and we don't have the sword. With Lloyd's life at stake, what other choice do we have?" The others nodded. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. What good will it do us if it's all just a setup?" Nya argued before Wu stepped forward. "The ninja are right. Even a misstep could be a step in the right direction. We cannot afford to do nothing. The ninja will go. As for Nya, you're still not ready." Nya grunted before walking off. Selena stepped forward. "I go with the ninja. If it's a trap, my powers will help." The ninja nodded before they headed off.

At Stiix was the ghosts laughing as Morro flew out of Ronin. "Pretty good impersonation. But they'll never buy it was me." Ronin said weakly as Morro grinned at him. "We shall see." That's when he heard Lloyd's voice from his cage. "You're no green ninja. The green ninja would never need to lie." Lloyd hissed before Morro floated right infront of his face. "Oh, you won't be the green ninja for long. Save your strength, because I'll be needing it. Prepare for a voyage. We head to the tomb at dawn." He laughed while Soul Archer looked at Ronin. "What about Ronin?" Morro scoffed. "Leave him. He's worthless now. Our queen has no use if his soul anymore." Bansha smirked before throwing out Ronin from the hideout, leaving him there full of hatred and guilt.

The ninja and Selena meanwhile had arrived at the caves of despair, looking around. "The caves of despair." Kaya said with a nostalgic tone. "This is where we first came for the first golden weapons. It's like everything has come full circle." Cole pointed out before Jay glared at him. "Don't say that. Full circle means it's coming to an end, and I don't want to hear that before I go into the caves of despair, one of my least favorite words. How do we even know the tomb's in there?" He exclaimed while Zane looked around. Soon Pixal saw something. "Searching for clues." He said and showed a carved skull outside an entrance.

"The third symbol." Zane pointed out and they all nodded. "Good enough for me. Let's go." Jay said as they walked inside, but Selena stopped a little. "What is it?" Kaya asked. "I thought I felt something." Selena answered. "Morro must already be here. We need to hurry." Cole said and Selena nodded before following inside. Though they didn't see Ghoultar who carved the symbol with his scythe, laughing maniacally.

They got deeper and deeper into the cave, following more symbols. "Huh. Looks like it only gets darker the deeper in we go." Cole pointed out before Selena raised her hand. "Lumtara." She said and a sphere of purple light appeared, illuminating their way. "Ha, we should have had a sorceress with us from the beginning." Jay said and Selena rolled her eyes as they continued. Suddenly they saw an opening infront of them. "Look! Some of these rocks appear to have been recently moved. Maybe Morro's already been through here." Kaya pointed out before Zane picked up on a smell. "My sense pick up traces of Kethanol, a highly flammable gas released from deep well mining." He informed and Cole covered his nose.

"And I thought it was Jay who ate an extra bean burrito again." Jay looked at him offended. "Hey!" They all walked inside, Kaya grabbing some ash from the ground. "Ash. Everything here has been burned. Perhaps one of the traps?" She said as they started to look around. Zane scanned the area. "The Kethanol geyser. We cannot stay long. It might ignite again at any moment." He told the others before Selena saw a skeleton. "Guys. Look at this." The others turned towards her and saw the skeleton. "Ew! You think it's him?" Jay asked and Kaya shook her head. "No. It's too small for an adult man." Zane looked at the skeleton's clothing. "It's the master of wind. These are the remains of Morro's mortal body." Everyone gasped.

Jay looked at the others nervously. "Well, Sensei told us he never came back from looking for the tomb. So if he's here, that means..." He said before Selena felt a presence. "It's a trap." She said and they all turned to see Ghoultar laughing. "Now you suffer same fate!" He said and used his scythe to make rock fall infront of the entrance, trapping them inside. "There's no way out. If this was a test, I think we certainly failed it." Kaya said and Selena held out her hands. "Delinea larow!" She said and started lifting the rocks, but it made more rocks fall. "No use. If I move the pile, more rocks will just fall." She said before Jay coughed.

"And all this gas is making me a little lightheaded." He said and Cole looked around. "This cavern is a virtual oven. If those geysers decide to ignite, we'll be cooked." Zane scanned the area before Pixal found something. "Pixal has located an opening. The cave-in must have created a gap." He pointed at a small hole in the ceiling. "Oh, but a gap to where? For all we know, it could be a dead end and for the record, that's another one of my least favorite words. Dead end." Jay exclaimed before more gas started to fill the room. "Too late!" Cole said and grabbed a boulder, blocking the geyser. "Cole, no!" Kaya exclaimed, but it was too late. "Ha, solved that problem." Cole said proudly while Zane glared at him. "Correction, you made it worse. Now the pressure will compact the explosion, multiplying the damage tenfold." Jay looked at him nervously.

"Oh, what are you trying to say?" He asked. "When that rock goes, every cave in a 10-mile radius will be filled with a wall of fire so hot, it'll incinerate everything in its path." Zane answered and Kaya nodded. "Guess we better get hot on our heels." She said before she and the others did airjitzu, while Selena used her magic to fly after them. They flew through the gap before running from the explosion. "Hurry! Go, go, go!" Selena exclaimed before they jumped into a mine cart, rolling faster and faster. "Great, now what? How do we stop this thing?" Jay asked as they all screamed.

Pixal soon saw something ahead and them. "Obstacle!" He exclaimed before the cart jumped, making them scream again. Suddenly they saw Ghoultar infront of them, so Jay used his aeroblade to hit him. "Haha, I caught it, guys! I caught it!" He gleefully cheered before remembering their situation. Cole's eyes suddenly widened when he saw up ahead. "Looks like we're coming to a dead end!" Jay grunted. "Oh, there's that word again. Never say that word! Aah! What do I do? What do I do?" Selena tried using her magic to stop the cart, but they still went too fast.

That's when the cart flew off the track, sending them all towards the lava screaming. But in last minute, R.E.X. appeared and caught them with a ladder, making them sigh in relief. "Haha! I could kiss Ronin! After I clobber him for getting us into this mess." Cole said before they climbed inside, finding it completely empty. "Oh, oh, oh. Autopilot! Course he's too scared to show his face." Jay growled before Ronin appeared on the screen. "Hey, ninja. If you're getting this message, I'm sure you have some choice words for me." He said and Selena scoffed. "Haha! You've got that right!" She said and Ronin sighed. "But I want to tell you, that wasn't me who sent you to this trap. I was under the control of Morro. I know you think I'm a crook by taking the sword, and I wanna make things right by offering my airship, R.E.X., as a peace offering. I know it's not what you had in mind, but I've remotely entered the location of the tomb. The real one this time." The location appeared on the screen, making the gasp in realization.

"Look at that. The reason Misako never found the tomb in Ninjago was because it was never there in the first place. It's under the ocean." Kaya said before Ronin smiled gently. "Morro has a head start, but R.E.X. should get you straight there in a jiff. And if it's any consolation, this'll be the last you see of me. If Nya wants to know a reason, tell her it's because I care. Okay. Good luck. And go make things right." He said before the message ended. "Looks like we're headed to the tomb. Time to buckle up." Kaya said and the others nodded as they were heading to the tomb.
