Chapter 9

Emeli

I stir. I blink. A bright light is right above me. I have no idea where I am.

I blink again. The light fades a little. I awake... and scream.

A hand grabs me. Who is trying to stop me from sitting up? It looks like someone in a nurse’s uniform.

Wait a minute! I look down. I am not wearing my clothes. It is a nightdress.

‘It’s ok Emeli. You are in hospital.’ said the nurse. I froze. Did I hear correctly?

‘What... happened?’ I slowly ask.

‘You almost drowned in a river.’ the nurse replies.

‘Almost?’ I said.

‘A boy called Wayne pulled you out.’ said the nurse. ‘He swam through the currents.’

I gasp. Wayne! My Wayne!

‘Where is he?’ I ask.

‘He is in the waiting room.’ replies the nurse.

She bustles out to go and tell him that I am awake. I try to sit up a little but my back is quite sore.

The nurse reappears with my parents. Oh my gosh. I had no idea that they were waiting for me. They look very pale.

I feel so guilty. I just don’t want to say to them all of the things that I have done to them behind their backs.

‘Emeli, do you feel ok?’ asks the nurse.

I stay silent. I don’t want to talk to my parents right now.

‘Where is he?’ I ask.

Just then, Wayne peeps through the door with a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates. My face goes red. I give a small smile.

He comes over and places the flowers and chocolates by my bedside. He then sits on the bed next to me.

‘Are you ok?’ Wayne asks.

I shake my head. ‘I feel so bad.’

Wayne takes my hand. ‘Please don’t. You have been through a shock.’

I place my head on his shoulder and cry. My parents come over and hug me.

I feel so bad.

Wayne

I get checked over pretty quickly. The doctors conclude that I didn’t have any serious injuries. I heave a sigh of relief.

I walk over straight into Emeli’s parents. Both of them look very pale.

‘Emeli?’ I ask.

‘No response.’ Mr Johnson replies.

I feel so scared. I don’t want to lose her.

‘Can we talk Wayne?’ asks Mrs Johnson.

‘Of course.’ I reply.

The three of us sit in the waiting room. I watch the clock. My palms feel sweaty.

‘Wayne. I understand why you weren’t being honest.’ said Mr Johnson. ‘You were worried about our reaction.’

I swallow. ‘Yes I was.’

‘Emeli really likes you.’ said Mrs Johnson. ‘I understand that she talked to you first.’

‘Yes she did.’ I reply.

‘Your Mum told me about the other schools.’ said Mr Johnson.

‘That was in the past. I have turned over a new leaf.’ I reply.

Mrs Johnson nods. ‘I am very sorry for my outburst earlier.’

‘I accept your apology.’ I reply with a small smile.

‘The main thing is that you saved my daughter’s life.’ Mr Johnson said.

I blush. ‘I had to rescue her.’

‘You did the right thing.’ said Mr Johnson.

All of a sudden, we hear loud footsteps. The face of a nurse peeps round.

‘Wayne? Mr and Mrs Johnson?’ the nurse said. ‘Emeli is awake.’

Emeli’s parents jump up and follow the nurse into the room. I hesitate.

I pick up the flowers and chocolates and go to the door. I peep my head round. Emeli is awake. She faces me as I come in.

I go in and place the things by her bedside and then, I sit next to her.

I ask her if she is ok. She replies that she feels very bad. I tell her not too but she places her head on my shoulder and starts to cry. Her parents come over and join in the hug.

She is very upset.

Emeli

Why do I have crying outbursts?

Mum, Dad and Wayne leave a few minutes after my outburst. I feel so bad.

‘Just relax Emeli.’ said the nurse. I try to.

Wayne comes back in a few minutes after my attempt to relax. ‘Emeli, we need to talk.’

I stare at him. ‘Sit.’

He sits next to me.

‘Emeli, my Mum and your parents have become close friends. Your parents like me.’ he said.

I give a little smile.

‘And they approve of our relationship. They want us to stay together as long as we do all of our schoolwork.’ he adds.

I give a little scream and pull Wayne in for a kiss. He blushes but accepts the kiss.

My parents come in at that moment. ‘Emeli.’

I pull Wayne away. I have gone really red.

‘We are so sorry for pushing you Emeli. Mrs Hander from your school contacted us. You can retake the maths exam.’

‘What about Ladyhurst?’ I ask.

‘You are staying put.’ said Mum.

I give a small scream and hug them.

‘I will help.’ said Wayne.

I smile and give him a little kiss.

Things are looking up.

Wayne

I smile at my Mum. She looks so much happier now that she has found new friends in Emeli’s parents.

The nurse peeps round. ‘Wayne? Do you want to see Emeli?’

I stand up and walk towards the room where Emeli is. Time to talk.

I tell Emeli that we have to talk. She tells me to sit.

I tell her that my Mum has become friends with her Mum and Dad. And, I drop the surprise.

Secretly, behind her back. Both families had a discussion about our relationship. And they all approve of it.

I smile and tell her. She screams and pulls me in for a kiss.

Her parents come in at that moment. We both pull away from each other.

They tell Emeli how sorry they are for pushing her too much and tell her that she can retake the maths exam.

Emeli asks about Ladyhurst. Her Mum drops surprise number two.

Emeli is staying!

She screams and hugs her parents. I offer help to Emeli for revision. She smiles and gives me a kiss.

I feel so much better. I saved Emeli’s life and I do truly feel that I have turned over a new leaf.
