Chapter 4
Emeli
Another day. Another chance to see Wayne. Even though it has only been one day since I last saw him, I have realised that I miss him quite a lot. I know now for definite that Wayne can’t be all that bad a person.
I won’t tell you what happened before school. I hate repeating the facts over and over. I was out of the house on time. But I didn’t see Wayne on the bus. I preyed that Wayne hadn’t played truant again.
I got to school. Jess wasn’t by the school gates which was rather strange. She is hardly ever absent. But wait! A crazy thought started to run through my mind. Was Jess with Wayne? Were both of them playing truant? I had to admit the fact that I was rather suspicious with the whole thing.
On my timetable, it said that I had art with Mrs Turner. But the thing is, ever since the Wayne incident. The room has been out of bounds. Rumour has it that the entire whiteboard had to be replaced. I bet that coasted hundreds of pounds.
Instead. We have been doing... Sewing! Even the boys have to do it and they moan about it so much. Doesn’t surprise me that none of the boys in the class are friends with Wayne.
Wayne
I am sitting in the waiting room of the dentist’s. I hate the dentist’s but at least I don’t have to face anyone from school at the moment. Everyone apart from Emeli have acted rather coldly towards me. I don’t give a damn about them anyway.
‘Wayne Martin!’ barks the voice of my dentist. I groan and walk over towards him. Time for pain and shame...
After the dentist’s (Surprisingly it wasn’t all that bad) I beg Mum not to make me go to school. She stares at me long and hard.
‘Wayne. I can get arrested if I don’t keep you in school.’ she replies.
‘Please?’ I beg. ‘For just one day?’
‘No Wayne. It is your own fault that you got into this terrible mess in the first place.’ Mum replies.
I lose my cool with her. ‘She was being mean to Emeli. That teacher Mrs Turner!’ I shout.
Mum gives me the ‘Shut up and do as your told’ look. I shut up but inside, I am raging like a mad bull.

At lunch, there is still no sign of Jess. So I eat lunch alone which is quite awkward as I hate being alone.
I spot a boy running towards me. He is rather cute. Then, as the running boy comes closer towards me. I realise that it is Wayne who is running towards me. He looks very athletic.
‘Hey!’ said Wayne. ‘Can I sit here?’
I stare at him ‘Sure.’
Wayne smiles and sits next to me. I blush a little.
‘No Jess?’ he asks.
‘No.’ I reply. ‘Where were you this morning?’
‘At the Dentist’s.’ he replies with a small scowl on his face.
‘Bust up with someone may I ask?’ I ask this in a nervous tone.
He looks at me. ‘Yeah. My Mum. I love her but sometimes I feel like she doesn’t listen.’
‘You wanted to stay off school huh?’ I ask.
‘Yeah.’ he replies.
There is a few moments of silence.
‘Are you doing anything tonight?’ Wayne asks.
‘Homework. Why?’ I reply.
‘Have you heard of Man of Steel?’ he asks.
‘Isn’t that the new Superman film?’ I reply.
‘Yes and... I was wondering if you would like to come and watch it with me.’ Wayne asks.
Oh my gosh! Wayne is asking me out! I have dreamt about this my whole life! But then my happiness turns to sadness.
‘I can’t. My parents never let me go to the cinema. They would freak!’ I reply. Yes I had to be truthful there.
‘Say that there is a new study group on at school.’ he replies.
‘What a clever idea! I’ll phone Mum and let her know that I won’t be back until just before tea.’ I reply.
Wayne smiles at me. I smile back. I have to confess that his smile is beautiful. I turn away from him so that I can text Mum to let her know that I will be in school.
Wayne and I wait for a reply. My phone vibrates. I look at the text. I smile and I give Wayne the thumbs-up.
I am going out with Wayne!
Wayne
Lunch hour was rather boring at first. Everyone were hanging out in their own little groups and... I was all alone. Well... That was what I thought.
Towards the end of lunch, I spot Emeli eating lunch alone. I run up to her. She watches me run and blushes a little. I ask if I can sit down next to her. She says yes.
She asks me where I was this morning. I reply that I was at the dentist’s. She looks really uncomfortable without Jess being around.
I wanted to escape from my Mum for a while. So, I did the bravest thing that I have ever done. I asked Emeli out on a cinema date to see Man of Steel. She looks happy but then after a moment, her face looks sad. She admits to me that her parents are rather strict.
I come up with a sneaky idea for Emeli to lie to her Mum saying that there was a new study group and that she was going.
She texts her Mum. We both wait for a reply. After a while Emeli’s phone vibrates. She looks at the message and smiles. She gives me the thumbs-up. She can come! It worked!
I think both of us personally hate lying to our families.

After school, me and Wayne race to the cinema in town. Both of us are still wearing our school uniforms but Wayne has taken his tie off and undone his top button. He looks so handsome.
He takes my hand as we walk into the cinema to buy tickets. I am falling more and more in love with him.
We choose seats in the back row. We both find and sit down in our seats. We watch as more people have started to arrive. All of a sudden, the lights darken. Wayne takes my hand and together we watch the film.
After the film, both of us stand outside the cinema. I really didn’t want to say bye to him but good times do have to come to an end.
‘Bye Wayne. See you in school.’ I said to him with a smile.
‘Bye Emeli.’ he replies with a smile.
We both turn and walk in different directions. I keep replaying some scenes from the film in my head. Normally, I am not a fan of action films but I really enjoyed it.
I reach my house a few minutes before tea. I take a deep breath and walk in. I am hit with the smell of fish and chips.
I walk into the dining room. Mum and Dad are serving up.
‘Hi Emeli. How was study group?’ My Mum asks.
‘It went really well thank you.’ I reply with a smile.
I feel so guilty.
Wayne
Both of us race towards the cinema after school. I am in such a rush. As we get there, I take Emeli’s hand and together we buy tickets for the back trow. I don’t care if anyone were staring at us. Not at all.
We walk to the cinema screen and we sit down in our seats. More people arrive just as the room darkens and the film begins. All this time, I have still been holding Emeli’s hand.
After the film, we both stand outside the cinema and say bye. From Emeli’s smile, I can tell that she had enjoyed the film.
We both walk in different directions. My smile still lingers on my face as I make the long journey home.
When I get home, Mum is sitting up in bed with an anxious look on her face.
‘Hi Mum.’ I said.
Mum jumps up and hugs me tightly.
‘Oh my baby. My Wayne.’ she whispers. She sounds just like a little girl.
I hug her back. ‘I am ok Mum.’
I regret the incident which happened earlier now.
‘Oh Wayne. I love you.’ Mum said. This is getting rather soppy now.
‘Love you too.’ I whisper. ‘I love you too.’
