Emeli

I have a great idea for my future. Because this year is so important, almost everyone is thinking about what they would like to do.

I am going to work with small children. They find me fun. When I smile, it makes them smile. I have no desire to do anything else. I have well and truly made up my mind.

Today is an inset day at school. I am glad that I don’t have to get up early.

Mum brings me breakfast. ‘Morning my maths star.’

I smile. ‘Morning Mum.’

Mum looks at me. ‘Your Brother is visiting today.’

‘I will spend time with him.’ I reply.

A tear trickles down Mum’s cheek. ‘You are such a kind daughter.’

‘I know you do.’ replies Mum.

As I eat my breakfast, I plan what to do with him. I want this time to be rewarding and not wasted.

After, I get dressed and wait for him to arrive.

‘Emeli, Wayne’s on the phone.’ said Dad. I get up and go to the phone.

‘Hello?’ I said.

‘Hi Emeli. Hear you are spending time with your Brother.’ said Wayne.

‘Yes I am.’ I reply. ‘What are you doing?’

‘Nothing much.’ he replies.

‘I think you should meet my Brother.’ I said.

‘That would be great.’ he replied.

‘Wayne, thank you for the pendent. It is so beautiful.’ I said.

‘That’s ok.’ he replies.

I hear the front door bell. ‘Wayne, my Brother’s here. I have to go now.’

‘Bye my Emeli.’ he said.

‘Bye my Wayne.’ I said.

I put the phone down and run downstairs. I spot my Brother.

‘Owen!’ I yell.

‘Emeli!’ he yells.

I jump into his arms. He is surprised. I give him a kiss on the cheek. He blushes.

‘I have missed you Emeli.’ said Owen.

‘I have missed you Owen’ I said.

Owen looks at me. I smile.

‘Let’s go upstairs.’ I said.

‘Ok.’ he replies.

I lead him upstairs to the quiet room. The quiet room has a TV and videogame system.

‘Mum and Dad told me last night.’ I said.

‘Told you what?’ he asks.

I take a deep breath. ‘You having a 30% chance of survival.’

He looks at me. ‘I knew that they were going to tell you.’

‘I honestly had no idea! I have been a horrible sister to you.’ I said.

‘No you haven’t. You are one nice and lovely sister.’ he said.

‘The day you stood up to me.’ I said.

‘That was in the past. This is now.’ he said.

I take his hand and squeeze it. He looks at me.

‘Now, let’s play on the games console!’ I said.

His face lights up. ‘You’re on!’ he yells.

Great move Emeli.

Wayne

Me and Mum sit eating breakfast. I really want to call Emeli and see if she is doing anything.

‘Mum? Can I call Emeli?’ I ask.

‘Of course you can. Don’t be too downhearted if she is busy.’ said Mum.

I pick up the phone and call Emeli.

‘Hello?’ said Mr Johnson.

‘Hi Mr Johnson, this is Wayne. Can I speak to Emeli please?’ I ask.

‘One minute.’ said Mr Johnson.

There is a slight pause as I wait for Emeli. She must be in her room.

Mr Johnson picked back up the phone. ‘She is eating breakfast at the moment.’

‘I just wanted to know if she was doing anything today.’ I said.

‘Her Brother is coming to see her.’ he replies.

I feel slightly sad. ‘Right...’

‘Hello?’ said Emeli. I smile and start to talk.

She tells me that her Brother is paying a visit. I tell her that we aren’t doing anything much. She suggests that I meet her Brother! I would like to meet Emeli’s Brother.

She then says thanks for the pendent which I gave her. Then, she announces that her Brother has arrived. We both get off the phone.

‘Busy?’ asks Mum.

‘Yes, her Brother is visiting.’ I reply.

Just then, the doorbell rings. We both freeze. Is it the police?

‘I’ll go.’ I said.

Slowly, I open the front door. A man is standing outside. A man who I know and love.

‘Dad!’ I yell as I jump into his arms.

‘My boy.’ he replies. ‘Where is your Mother?’

Mum peeps her head round. She gasps. ‘Terry?’

‘Come here my beautiful wife.’ said my Dad.

She leaps into his arms. She is laughing and crying.

‘Oh Terry. Did you escape?’ she asks.

‘No. They let me out early because I had been very good.’ he replies.

He carries her into the lounge and hugs her.

‘How much have you missed me?’ Dad asks.

‘A lot.’ Mum replies. ‘Every single day.’

‘Jacky, I brought this for you.’ said Dad.

My Mum looks at her present.

It is a ring. A symbol of love.

‘Oh. I love you.’ said Mum.

‘I love you too.’ said Dad.

Both of them start to kiss. Tears are trickling down both of their cheeks.

I politely excuse myself and go to my bedroom. I am so happy.

A knock on my door brings me to attention. I look up and see Dad.

‘Hi Dad.’ I said.

‘Hi Wayne.’ he said. ‘Your Mother has phoned Mrs Johnson with the news.’ I smile.

‘I want to meet Emeli. Is she nice?’ he asks.

‘She is the nicest girl you will ever see. Mum is a naughty girl.’ I said.

Mum comes in. ‘Wayne Martin! That is untrue!’

Me and Dad laugh.

‘Come on, the Johnsons are expecting us.’ said Mum.

I jump up and go.

Emeli

Me and Owen are having so much fun. It is quite clear that Owen is better at video games then me.

‘Emeli! Owen!’ yells Mum.

‘Coming!’ I yell.

Both of us get up.

‘Wait.’ said Owen. He kisses me on the cheek. I blush. I love my Brother.

We both run downstairs.

‘Emeli, the Martins are coming over.’ said Mum.

‘Wayne?’ I ask. Mum nods.

‘Great!’ I yell. Owen smiles.

The Martins arrive in good time. Wayne looks so handsome in his outfit.

‘Wayne. This is my Brother Owen.’ I said.

Wayne holds out his hand. ‘Nice to meet you.’

Owen smiles. ‘Nice to meet you.’

A man I don’t know walks in. Wayne takes my hand.

‘Emeli, I would like you to meet my Dad.’ he said.

There is silence.

‘Nice to meet you. I’m Wayne’s girlfriend.’ I said.

Wayne’s Dad smiles. ‘Nice to meet you Emeli. Wayne has told me about you.’

Wayne blushes. ‘Dad...’

Everyone laughs.

While the adults talk downstairs, me and Wayne go to my room.

‘I like your room.’ he said.

‘Thanks.’ I reply.

‘Do you want me to put that on for you?’ he asks holding up the pendent.

‘Yes please.’ I reply.

I hold up my hair and he puts the pendent on. I smile and look down.

I feel amazing.

‘I am going to work in a nursery.’ I said. ‘I love looking after children.’

Wayne gasps. ‘That is exactly what I want to do.’

I stare. ‘No way!’

‘Who knows, we might be working in the same nursery together.’ he said.

‘And of course, I want to be with you.’ I said.

‘And I want to be with you.’ he said.

We both hold hands and kiss.

Our future looks golden.

We arrive at the Johnsons. I meet Owen who is Emeli’s Brother. He looks really nice.

I introduce my Dad to everyone. Emeli gets to meet him. I can tell that Dad likes her.

While the adults talk, I follow Emeli to her room. I really like her room. It is full of decorative things. I notice the pendent. I offer to put it on for her. She lifts her hair and I put it on for her.

She drops a bombshell. She tells me that she wants to work in a nursery. That is the same career choice as me! I tell her and she looks amazed. She tells me that she wants us to stay together. I agree. I know that this is forever.

We hold each other’s hands and kiss. I am so happy.

My life is complete.
