Chapter 10
Wayne
A new school week. Monday dawns quite quickly. Emeli as far as I know got discharged from hospital late last night. I feel so tall and strong.
I walk into the kitchen. Time for perfect toast! I have decided not to eat burnt toast again!
Mum takes me along to school. I keep my head held high as we travel to school. We travel past Emeli’s house but I don’t see her.
When I get to school, the first thing I do is head back to the art room. The same one in which I threw red paint over a whiteboard. I want to try and make amends.
Mrs Turner is in there, listening to the radio while sketching something. I take a deep breath and knock on the door.
‘Come in.’ said Mrs Turner.
I open the door. Mrs Turner stares at me.
‘Miss. I have come to say sorry for what happened in the art room that day. I totally lost my temper and I am really sorry for ruining your whiteboard.’ I said.
She looks at me. ‘I accept your apology Wayne. I have to say sorry to you for my outburst.’
‘I accept your apology Miss.’ I reply just as the bell rings.
‘Wait a minute Wayne. I am proud of you for saving Emeli. All of the teachers are proud of your actions.’ she replies.
I blush. ‘Thanks Miss.’
She smiles. I smile and head to formroom.
When I arrive, Jess is there but not Emeli. Everyone claps and cheers as I come in. Jess must have told everyone.
‘Emeli is coming in later.’ said Jess. I smile.
I feel so proud of myself.
‘Forget Matt. Forget graffiti. This is the real me.’ I thought.
This is me.
Emeli
My parents drop me off at school. Both of them have been so kind to me. I feel so happy.
I walk to the school library to meet Wayne and do some revision for my maths exam retake.
When I get there, Wayne is sitting at the table with some revision guides. He looks at me and smiles. I smile and sit down.
‘Are you feeling better?’ he asks.
‘I feel a lot better.’ I reply.
‘I made up with Mrs Turner by the way.’ he said.
I stare at him. ‘I am proud of you.’
He blushes. ‘All of the teachers know what happened.’
I blush. ‘I know. That is the only topic of discussion at the moment.
Wayne holds up a revision guide. ‘Let’s get to work.’
I nod and start to revise. Wayne is so gentle and patient with me. He doesn’t bark like Mr Zucker does. Wayne is the total opposite.
‘Wayne. I don’t get this.’ I said.
Wayne puts a magazine down. ‘Let’s have a look.’
He goes through the problem with me. It is a division problem. His brain must be working hard because he totally understands the problem.
The bell rings. Both of us put the revision books away and head off to lessons.
‘Emeli, do you want to go on another moonlight picnic date?’ he asks.
‘Yes. But my parents...’ I say.
‘I asked them last night and they said it was ok.’ he replies.
‘8PM?’ I ask.
‘That time is suits me fine.’ he replies.
‘Great! I love you.’ I whisper.
He blushes. ‘I love you too.’
We both stare into each other’s eyes for a few moments before going to lessons.
Wayne
I sit in the school library waiting for Emeli to arrive. It is raining outside and a number of people have taken shelter in the school library.
I spot Emeli as she comes in. She stares at the number of revision guides on the table. I smile. She smiles and sits down.
We start to talk. She looks so much better. I tell her that I have made up with Mrs Turner. She looks really proud. I also tell her that word about the rescue has gone around. She blushes. She hates being the centre of attention.
We both get to work. I am nowhere like Mr Zucker. I am patient with her.
She gets stuck on a division problem. I smile. I am pretty good at division. I am able to help her out.
The bell rings. After putting the guides away, we walk to lessons.
I ask Emeli out on another moonlight picnic date. She said yes but she looks worried. I reassure her that about it with her parents.
We agree on a time of 8PM. She tells me those three favourite words.
‘I love you.’
I tell her the same three words as we stare into each other’s eyes.
I can’t wait.
Emeli
The day speeds by really fast. I don’t pay much attention in any of my lessons.
I don’t eat a lot of dinner either. Mum and Dad know about our date. Mum even offers to help me get ready! I accept her offer.
After dinner, I have a quick shower and a hair wash. I use my new shampoo and body wash. My Mum dries my hair while we listen to the music on the radio in the bedroom. We both start to sing along. We end up giggling.
I slip on my black dress. The same one as before. I give a little twirl while Mum claps. She has not seen me in this dress.
Mum chooses some sliver jewellery. This is rather spooky but she picks the same ones that I wore before. Of course, she doesn’t know that I have already been on a moonlight picnic date with Wayne. Both of us have kept quiet about it.
Mum helps me into some silver high heels. Thank goodness I am not wearing my pumps. She also very carefully brushes my long hair and styles it. She does my make-up. Every few minutes, she asks me if I am ok. I always nod.
The finishing touch is some impulse perfume. I stand in front of the mirror and smile.
‘You look beautiful.’ said Mum.
‘I love you.’ I said to her.
‘I love you too.’ she replies.
I smile as my Mum drives me to the park. I have butterflies in my stomach.
When we arrive, I spot Wayne waving. I jump out of the car and try to run towards him. It is not easy in high heels!
I stumble over just as I reach him. He picks me up and puts his hands around my waist. I do the same. Both of us are giggling.
We both sit down and watch the stars while slipping cola out of some plastic cups.
‘Do you know something?’ I said.
‘What?’ he asks.
‘Our love for one another is fizzy. You know, full of drama and events. Just like cola.’ I said.
‘I think you are right.’ he replies.
I stand up and stretch my arms out. Wayne grabs my waist and spins me round. We both start to kiss. Then, Wayne loses his footing and we both stumble onto the picnic mat. I feel something sticky on my leg.
‘Emeli! The cola!’ Wayne yells.
Turns out that in the process, we have knocked over the litre bottle of cola. We both laugh and clear up the mess.
Wayne cuddles me for a while as the temperature gets colder.
‘This is so much fun.’ I said.
‘Glad you are enjoying it.’ he replied.
We both hold hands and stargaze.
Wayne
I stand in front of my mirror. After a hard and long day at school, it is time for the date.
I am wearing my suit and bow tie. I put on my black jacket. I look very smart.
I say goodbye to my Mum and head towards the park. I want to get there in good time to set up the picnic.
The sunset looks beautiful in the sky as I set up. I can’t wait to see Emeli.
It isn’t too long before I spot Emeli being dropped off. She tries to run in her high heels but she stumbles over. I pick her up and put my hands around her waist. She copies. We both giggle.
We stargaze as we sit on the picnic mat drinking cola.
Emeli then says something really clever. She said that our love was fizzy like cola. I totally agreed with her. I love her way of words.
She then stands up and stretches her arms out. I grab her waist and turn her to face me. We kiss. But then! Disaster! I lose my footing and fall back on the picnic mat. Bringing Emeli down with me. Then, I spot something sticky on Emeli’s leg.
The cola! The litre bottle has topped over releasing all of the cola! Both of us laugh and clean up.
After this, I cuddle Emeli for a while. Once again, she isn’t wearing a jacket.
She tells me how much fun this is. I am glad that she is enjoying it as much as I do.
Both of us stargaze while holding each other’s hand.
This is love.
