9 - Christmas Eve

After Yoongi realized his feelings towards Hana, he tried very hard not to be awkward around her but it was difficult. Everytime they were around each other, either Hoseok or Jin hyung or Jungkook will start to whistle and giggle.

Jungkook had successfully became exclusive with the bibimbap girl as Yoongi and the other hyungs would call her.

Yoongi was just glad it was not awkward between Jungkook and Hana. He didn't want any personal matter to affect their work relationship.

"Hyung, how's Ye Jin?" Namjoon asked. He was in Yoongi's office for his monthly drop-in as Yoongi would call it. He was pretty sure it was their parents who sent Namjoon to check up on him time to time. Yoongi didn't mind it though. He liked the visits.

"Is that question from you or dad?" Yoongi looked up from his Macbook, smiling.

"Dad." Namjoon laughed, his dimples deepened.

"She's okay. She's nice. More importantly, she's the bridge between Gloss and Colliers."

Namjoon sighed. He looked worried. "Can you absolutely see yourself spending the rest of your life with her?"

No. Yoongi's mind answered way too quickly and made him shook. He leaned back into his chair. "Honestly now, I'm not so sure."

"Wow." Namjoon's face was pure surprise. "What changed?"

"Namjoon ah..." Yoongi looked at Namjoon and he felt his cheeks heated a little before continuing, "I think I fell in love."

Namjoon's jaw would've hit the floor if it could. "With who?"

"Hana."

"Hoseok's assistant?"

"Yeah."

"Hold on. I gotta go find Hoseok."

"Wait why —" Yoongi couldn't finish his sentence when Namjoon left in a hurry to gossip with his best friend.

Hoseok and Namjoon were the same age, which was probably why they got close to each other quite fast.

Yoongi ran off to Hoseok's office too. When he came inside, the room was filled with the boys, Jin hyung and Namjoon was on the couch, Hoseok at his chair behind his desk, Jungkook at the seat across from Hoseok. They were laughing and teasing Yoongi.

Yoongi closed the door quickly, fearing other people could hear the boys that he so wanted to punch one by one now.

"Shut up guys." Yoongi scolded them but the rest just kept on giggling.

"Okay okay. Anyways it's almost lunch time. Anyone going out for lunch? I'm hungry." Jin hyung rubbed his stomach.

Yoongi shook his head in disbelief. He was pretty sure he saw Jin hyung eating a full breakfast in the morning. He was always amazed how Jin hyung could eat that much yet not gaining any weight.

"I can't. I need to finish this paper." Hoseok said. "But buy me something please." He said to Jin hyung which the eldest nodded to.

"I'm having lunch later with Ji Eun, after the lunch hour." Jungkook said.

"You Yoongi?" Jin hyung looked at Yoongi but suddenly gasp when Namjoon elbowed him slightly. "What?" He asked grinning dimpled boy.

"Hyung," Namjoon looked at Yoongi. "Sorry can you go with someone else? Me and Jin hyung are going on a date."

"What date?" Jin hyung asked. "Why would I go on a date with you?"

Namjoon looked at Jin hyung as if trying to tell the eldest to trust him and just play along. "Anyways, Yoongi hyung. Maybe you could ask Hana noona to go out with you?" He grinned.

The other boys suddenly were noisy again with hoots and whistles. Yoongi palmed his face and let out a heavy breath. He didn't know how he could survive all these years with these idiots.

"Sorry, I was just about to say I am having lunch with Ye Jin." Yoongi said instead.

The boys suddenly became quiet. Hoseok looked at Yoongi, as if contemplating on saying something to him or not.

"What?" He asked Hoseok.

"When are you gonna break it off with Ye Jin?"

Yoongi couldn't answer immediately. He wanted to say he didn't want to, for Gloss. But he didn't want to string the poor girl along a ride he now probably didn't intend to complete.

"Hyung," Namjoon looked at him. "You know dad wants you to be happy. It wouldn't matter to him if you say no to this deal between you and Ye Jin."

"I know." Yoongi answered softly.

"The longer it takes for you to decide, the more painful it will be for both of you." Jin hyung said gently.

"Hi Yoongi ssi!" Ye Jin smiled as she approached their table at the Korean restaurant Yoongi booked for lunch.

Yoongi smiled back politely. "Hi Ye Jin ssi." He wondered why they were still using polite speech when him and Hana took exactly one day of meeting each other to use banmal or informal speech.

He knew now it was subconsciously him wanting to be closer to Hana and keeping the barrier between him and Ye Jin.

"How are you?" Ye Jin asked, forcing him to focus back to the lunch.

"I'm good. How are you?"

"Good, too."

"Listen, before we order," Yoongi paused, his fingers were fidgeting. "There's something I'd like to talk to you about."

"Sure. What is it?"

"Ye Jin ssi..." He sighed. "Do you really want to get married to me?"

Ye Jin's smile faltered a little before she composed herself and calmly smiled again. "And you don't."

Yoongi didn't know how to answer her. He kept quiet.

"I know you don't." Ye Jin smiled again. "I wish I could make you feel better by saying I don't either. But I can't. As much as it surprised my dad, I'm surprised at myself for actually falling for you."

Yoongi looked at her. "I'm sorry..."

"Don't be." Her eyes were glistening. "It's not your fault. It was never anyone's fault." She dabbed her napkin at the corner of her eyes.

Yoongi reached across the table and held her hand. "I wanted to. I really did. But..." He trailed off.

"But you like someone else."

Yoongi's head shot up to look at Ye Jin who was smiling reassuringly.

"It's okay. I know. It's the unnie I met at Ivy, isn't it?"

Yoongi frowned, wondering what could have made it obvious.

"Yoongi ssi, the way you looked at her that night was different than how you would look at me. Your eyes were filled with wonder and awe when you see her, even when you were looking at the back of her head."

She laughed and Yoongi smiled shyly. "I was jealous." Ye Jin continued. "These two months I had hoped for you to look at me that way but you never did once."

"Ye Jin ssi..."

"Don't say sorry. Like I said, it's not your fault." She gripped his hand a little tighter before letting go.

"Does she know you like her?"

Yoongi let out a nervous laugh. "No."

"Are you going to confess soon?"

"Oh God this is awkward. Talking about this with you."

"Please don't be. I want us to at least be friends. If that's okay with you."

"Yeah," Yoongi nodded. "I'd like that."

At the end of the lunch, a part of Yoongi regretted the decision to break it off with Ye Jin. She was sweet even towards the end. He didn't even know if Hana liked him the way he liked her. But he knew he had to end it since he didn't want Ye Jin to get hurt.

______________

It was finally Christmas eve and thet were preparing their company party at the office. There were red socks and mistletoes everywhere. Clouds of cottons were pasted along the walls. Christmas songs were playing through the speakers, DJ-ed by Jungkook and Ji Eun.

Hana had taken the day off due to a 'family matter' as she had said but promised to be in time for the party.

When she did come, Yoongi saw her eyes were a little red. He wanted to ask but thought to do it when they were alone.

Namjoon, Hoseok and Jin hyung were at the buffet table, stacking their plates with food when Yoongi pulled Hana's elbow gently and guided her to his office.

"What's wrong?" He asked her when he closed the door. His office was dimly lit so he couldn't really see her eyes.

"Nothing." She said.

"You were crying before. Why?"

"I wasn't. Can I go back to the party now?" Hana sounded irritated. She turned around but Yoongi held her hand.

"Wait. I just wanted you to tell me what's wrong."

"Why?" She looked at him. Her eyes reflected the soft light from his desk lamp. Her eyes were sad, frustrated and angry.

"I don't know. I just do."

She kept quiet but didn't pull her hand that Yoongi was clutching.

"Please tell me what's wrong."

"I'm sorry. I think I should just go home." Hana turned around for the door.

"Can't you just please tell me?" Yoongi's voice had gone louder. He was frustrated as well since Hana would never really answer his questions.

"No."

"Why? Why can't you? What's so important that you need to keep everything to yourself?" Yoongi was close to shouting.

"Fine you want to know everything about me?"

"Yes."

"I'm married."

"No, you were married."

Hana looked at him surprised but didn't ask him how he knew. "You know why I live at Ivy?"

"No."

"They have a live-in nanny. Why do you think I need a nanny?"

"Nanny? Like for childr—" Yoongi's eyes wide with sudden realization. "You have a kid?"

"I have a 3 year old baby. Who today was taken by my ex parents in law. Who apparently think that I can't take care of her because I'm working and that she's not technically mine." By now she was already sobbing her heart out.

Yoongi pulled her into his arms and caressed her back subconsciously. He put his head on top of hers while she cried her eyes out on his chest. After a while, her sobs slowed down and she looked up to him.

"Sorry." She whispered.

"It's okay. Talk when you're ready. Sorry I kept on asking." Yoongi spoke back, his voice so low it came out as a croak.

Hana sighed. "She's - Ha Young, she's three. My husband passed away earlier this year. A car accident, he was drunk driving." Hana chuckled sarcastically. "Well, he was always drunk."

Yoongi now knew why Hana hated alcohol. "The money you got. From his insurance?"

Hana nodded. "One good thing he did before he died - naming me as the benefactor. I put it down for an apartment. The rest for Ha Young's fund. All my salary goes to Ivy's room lease. So I could use their nanny for Ha Young."

"That's why you had to rush home after work?"

She nodded again.

"And Taehyung?"

She eyed his weirdly, probably for asking bout Taehyung out of the blue but answered the question nonetheless. "He's my late ex-husband's younger brother. All of us grew up together."

"He helps look after Ha Young when you're out? The one you called 'baby' was Ha Young?"

Hana looked at him, suddenly remembering the phone call in the taxi. "Ah that phone call. Taehyung called me so Ha Young could talk to me before bed."

Yoongi avoided her eyes. "That phone call..." He paused, "and the one you made before the party at the break room."

"How did y— Wait, were you eavesdropping?"

Yoongi expected her to get mad but instead she just looked at him softly. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."

"Yes you did." Hana smiled for the first time tonight.

"Yes I did." Yoongi gave an embarrassed laugh. "Sorry. So Ha Young is now with her grandparents?"

"They said they just wanted to talk to her but they brought a lawyer and they said I can't take care of her. So she's now with them. You have no idea how she screamed for me and I couldn't do anything because they were right." Her eyes teared again.

Yoongi brushed his thumb under her eye to wipe the tear that dropped. "You're her mother. You have the right. Why would the lawyer say that?"

Hana hesitated from answering at first. She sighed. "Ha Young is not my biological daughter. She's my late ex-husband's daughter with one of his girlfriend."

Yoongi frowned, he didn't understand why Hana would agree to take care of the baby in the first place.

"Can we sit down?" She felt limp against his embrace.

Yoongi guided her to his couch and sat next to her.

"I really need a drink right now."

"Are you sure?" Yoongi asked soflty, his hand still idly rubbing her back.

"Yeah."

Yoongi went to his desk and took out a quarter-empty bottle of wine. It was his stash for successful projects. He'd drink a glass with Hoseok and Jin hyung once in a while. Yoongi sat back next to Hana and uncorked the bottle. "Do you need a glass?"

Hana answered by drinking it straight from the bottle. Yoongi's eyes wide with surprise.

"After the divorce," she continued after a few gulps, "he suddenly came to my house holding a baby carrier. He said it was either I take care of her or he'd throw her away somewhere. So I took her in. But I fell in love with her and I want her back." She took a few gulps again, sobbing uncontrollably.

Yoongi took the bottle from her to keep her from drinking too much. She tried to snatch it away but Yoongi held the bottle up and Hana had to lean on Yoongi to try and reach the bottle. Yoongi's breath hitched a little when he felt her body pressed against his.

Yoongi looked into her eyes, wondering if she noticed what she was doing. Her eyes were glossy and dazed. He suspected Hana to already be tipsy.

What she did next confirmed his suspicion.

Yoongi suddenly felt Hana's soft lips on his.

A/N:

If you can't remember about the phone call, do go back to the chapter when Hana made a call to Taehyung about her welcome party.

During the phone call, she was talking to Taehyung but was suddenly cut off when Ha Young spoke on the phone.
