6 - The Welcoming Party
The dinner with Ye Jin and her father, Mr Song Sang Hyeon went by pretty well for Yoongi. He was charming, gentlemanly and mature. All that happened before was kept way, way at the back of his mind so he could be professional about it.
Mr Song was fatherly and kind. He was friendly so Yoongi felt at ease almost immediately. "So, Yoongi, when shall we set the date for?"
Yoongi snorted his ice cold lemon water through his nose and coughed till he turned almost purple.
"Oh gosh! Are you okay Yoongi ssi?" Ye Jin quickly passed a napkin to him and gently rubbed his back.
"Yeah I'm okay." He said between coughs. "It just went down the wrong pipe." He smiled and cleared his throat. "Umm, Mr Song," he continued once the pain at the junction between his nose and throat had lessen. "I know this isn't an answer you're expecting from me," Yoongi glanced at Ye Jin and back at the stout old man. "but if I may, I'd like to get to know Ye Jin more before we commit to marriage. I'd like her to get to know me as well."
Mr Song raised his eyebrows and clasped his hands together with his elbows on the table. "On the contrary, that's exactly the answer I was expecting from you."
"Sir?"
"Thank you for telling me that. Honestly, we've been through a number of men wanting to get married to my Ye Jin just because of who I am." The old man leaned in his chair. "I'm relieved you wanted to take the time to get to know her." He smiled.
Yoongi smiled as well, nervously. If only they knew he was just as bad as those men.
The rest of the week went by pretty quickly. They had meetings and needed to complete the models of their projects for their clients.
"Hana, can we talk for a moment?" Yoongi had pulled her aside for a moment when he saw her at the break room.
"Yes boss?"
"Umm, about that thing last night."
"Oh you mean when you were sniffing my hand or when you almost kissed me?" Hana pretended to sound innocent.
"Shh!" Yoongi frantically tried to cover her mouth with his hand when she simply laughed.
"Okay okay. Sorry."
"Please don't tell anyone. I don't want people to think I was sexualy harassing my employee."
"What can you give me?
"What?"
"You didn't think it'd be free did you?" Her hazel eyes twinkled with mischief.
"Hey I helped you carry the box back to the office. I even reorganized them back in the filing room."
"Ah that. Okay then. We're even." And she left. Yoongi felt relieved but was unsure why his heart was beating rather fast instead.
Yoongi noticed Hana was beginning to be a little bit more comfortable with him. They could strike up a conversation at the coffee room and be at ease.
Hana had teased him about the wall-slamming and each time Yoongi's eyes would dart left and right to make sure no one was around. She'd simply laugh at his reaction. She was becoming the annoying older sister.
"Hyung. We need to do a welcoming party for Hana noona." Jungkook came into his office on Wednesday.
"Have you asked her?"
"No. We should make it a surprise!" The maknae was now jumping excitedly next to Yoongi's desk.
Yoongi chuckled at Jungkook's overexcitedness. "Are you sure she would want to come?"
"Just don't tell her and when it's 5PM Friday, we'll just kidnap her to the place!"
Yoongi frowned at that. He opened his mouth to dissuade the boy.
"Aah hyung~~!" Jungkook's voice now had gone up two keys higher and each word had turned singsongy. Jungkook was probably too desperate now since he'd only call Yoongi 'hyung' when they were out from the office.
Yoongi laughed at that. He took a few seconds to think it over. He was also having fun looking at Jungkook's action while he pretended to ponder. When the young boy let out an exasperated groan, Yoongi threw his hands up to surrender. "Okay okay. Don't kidnap her. Just let her know on Friday. I'm sure our Jungkookie will be able to make her say yes."
Friday came and it was around noon that Jungkook told Hana the plan. Yoongi knew this because he and Jin hyung was in Hoseok's office when Jungkook came in all mopey and depressed.
"What's wrong?" The eldest in the room asked the youngest.
"I asked Hana noona."
"And she said no?" Hoseok asked.
Jungkook nodded, head hanging low.
"Told ya." Yoongi chipped in, earning him a glare from Jin hyung. He sighed and spoke gently. "Why do you want have this party for her so badly?"
Jungkook looked at Yoongi and bit his lower lip, exposing that tiny mole he had under the line of his lower lip. "She's exactly my style."
Yoongi swore Jungkook was blushing. This was the first time Yoongi saw the young boy expressing his interest in a girl - or woman in this matter. A part of him felt proud, like his own son had grown up. But a small part of him felt irritated for some reason. Probably because he didn't like the age gap.
"Jungkook ah. She's eight years older than you." Yoongi reasoned with the maknae.
"And? It shouldn't be a problem. I told you guys my mom is older than my dad." Jungkook groaned and slid deeper into Hoseok's chair. "I reaaaaaally wanted the party to happen." He whined towards the rest.
Jin hyung sat quietly. Yoongi wanted the eldest to give opinion on this matter. He gave Jin hyung eye signals. Hoping the eldest could take the hint.
Tell him he's too young for her or she's too old for him.
"Ahem." Jin hyung cleared his throat.
Okay hyung. You've got this.
Jin hyung nodded at Yoongi confidently. "Poor baby."
Wait, what?
"You want me to talk to her?" Jin hyung continued.
NO! Not that! Yoongi rolled his eyes and groaned internally.
"Can you hyung? Can you try and make her say yes?" Jungkook's eyes widened with hope.
"Or better yet," he turned to Yoongi with an accomplished smile, "Yoongi, you can just tell Hana she needs to have this party and it's an order from the boss himself." Jin hyung smiled and gave a thumbs up to Yoongi, as if saying "I did a good job, didn't I?"
Jungkook now looked at Yoongi, his eyes filled with high expectations.
"That might actually work!" Hoseok popped in.
Shit.
Yoongi sighed. "Okay. I'll try." He wanted to have a drink with all of them too. It had been a hectic week and the weeks to come will be even frenzied. He wanted them to let loose for a night before continuing their projects.
Jungkook squealed, hands clapping really fast before clasping them together and tucking them under his chin. "Thank you boss! Thank you!"
"Hi boss. You wanted to see me?" Hana stepped into Yoongi's office after knocking.
"Yeah. Come sit down." His hand waved at her for her to come in and sit opposite him.
"Anything I can help you with, boss?" Hana asked once she sat down.
"Umm.." Yoongi scratched the back of his head, trying to structure his sentence properly. "It's about the party..." He trailed off and looked at her, tying to gauge her reaction.
"Oh..." Hana looked down.
"Look, if you really don't want to it's okay. You're not forced to. We just thought it would be good for both you and the rest." Yoongi now leaned into his desk to lessen the distance between them. "The others are pretty stressed out lately so a party doesn't sound that bad."
Yoongi could see her chewing the insides of her cheeks and he was pretty sure she was wiggling her toes as well. When she looked up to him, she eyes seemed... Sad.
"Let me make a call first and then I'll let you know." Hana suddenly said.
Yoongi pursed his lips and nodded. "No problem."
Hana took out her phone from her skinny jeans and left his office.
Yoongi noticed his coffee cup was now empty so he decided to refill it. In no way whatsoever was he trying to eavesdrop on Hana's phone conversation. No way whatsoever.
While walking towards the coffee room, Yoongi saw a pen mark on the wall which was unfortunately near the break room's door.
He tried to remove the mark with his thumb and a little bit of spit (he made a mental note to mention about this serious matter in the next meeting). In no way whatsoever was he trying to eavesdrop Hana's phone conversation in the break room. No way whatsoever.
"Hey Taehyungie."
"I'm at the office. Had your lunch yet?"
"Hmm.. make sure you eat afterwards."
"Okay, the thing is... They are having a party for me after work, but—"
"Are you sure? I'm so so sorry for the short notice. I'll make it up to you, okay?"
"You want pizza or chicken? I'll have them deliver it to the room."
"Okay pizza then. The usual one?"
"Okay. There's some money in the— I love you too, baby..."
"Yes that drawer. Okay. I'll call from time to time. Thanks Taehyungie. I owe you one."
Yoongi was back in his office, sitting in his chair with an empty coffee cup in his hand. Somehow the phone call Hana made just now (which he accidentally heard, by the way) kept on replaying in his head.
Why did it sound as if this 'Taehyungie' was going to be staying at her room?
Why would that person know where she kept her money?
Most importantly, why would she say "I love you, baby" to a younger brother-like friend?
Yoongi was still deep in his thoughts when Hana knocked on his door again.
"Boss?"
"Yeah? Come in."
"I can go— but only for a short while, is that okay?"
Yoongi looked down at her feet, smiling slightly when he saw the wiggles of her toes.
"That's not a problem."
She gave a small smile to Yoongi and left his office.
"She said yes? Boss! You're the best! Kaepjjang!" Jungkook was now jumping up and down with his hands on Jin hyung's shoulders.
"Jungkook ah! That hurts!" The eldest attempted to scold the youngest but Jungkook simply continued on and Jin hyung rolled his eyes to express irritation but didn't stop the maknae.
Yoongi swore Jin hyung was spoiling Jungkook too much.
"Hyung, you need to scold him harsher than that. You're spoiling him too much." Yoongi said his thought out loud.
"What are you talking about hyung?" Hoseok looked at Yoongi with disbelief. "You're the worst one here! Everything Jungkook does is okay with you!"
"No it isn't." Yoongi made a face.
Hoseok turned to the youngest boy, "Jungkook ah, which one of us gives in to you the most?"
"Boss." Jungkook answered in 0.3 second.
All three of them laughed except Yoongi who smirked while trying to control his smile. It's not as if he could help it, Jungkook was too adorable.
5 o'clock came and all of them left in their own cars to the restaurant. Hoseok went with Jin hyung and Jungkook and Hana went with Yoongi.
Jungkook was fidgety in the front seat all the way there, probably nervous being in the same car as Hana. Yoongi smiled at that. He found it cute. He himself had never experienced love before, but he could understand Jungkook's anxiousness.
When they reached there, Jungkook insisted in sitting beside Hana and since Yoongi was the boss, Hana - the star of the night- was placed to his left.
They ordered their food and Yoongi was surprised yet again when Hana ordered more than him. Yes he wasn't a big eater but even Jin hyung's eyes were wide when she finally finished ordering.
"That's a lot for a small lady." Jin hyung commented.
"I'm not the one paying for it, though." Hana remarked, smirking.
Yoongi and the boys' eyes widened with the surprise attack before laughing out loud. Yoongi then rolled his eyes at Hana, pretending he was annoyed and Hana laughed at that.
"Beer for you, noona?" Jungkook asked.
"No thanks. I don't drink." She smiled.
"At all or just tonight?" Hoseok asked.
"At all." She answered smiling at Hoseok. "I don't like the effect it had on me."
"Yoongi and Hoseok don't drink as well." Jin hyung said.
"We do drink champagne or wine occasionally but not beer." Yoongi explained.
"I'm bad with alcohol. I get drunk with one glass." Hoseok laughed.
"Ah. Okay. I don't drink those either." She smiled apologetically. "I'm so sorry I'm not being fun, am I?" She turned to Jungkook.
The young boy turned red even before the alcohol came.
"No no no. It's okay. I'm just glad - I mean we! We are just glad you let us have the party." Jungkook cleared his throat before looking away and drinking a whole glass of cold water.
Hana chuckled. "I'm sorry I can't stay that long though." Her phone vibrated and she excused herself to answer the call.
Yoongi eyed her while she was standing near the front door, a couple of tables away from them. She was talking while drawing imaginary pictures on the floor with her toes. He smiled softly at the view but suddenly felt a pair of eyes were focusing on him.
Yoongi turned to see Hoseok narrowing his eyes at him. "What?" He asked half-whispered.
Hoseok simply smirked and shook his head.
When the food arrived, they ate, shared stories (except for Hana who mostly listened), and drank. Yoongi noticed she kept on exchanging texts with someone whom he presumed was that Taehyungie.
When they were done, Hana decided to leave for home but the rest of the staff wanted to play the fold your finger game. She agreed to stay for one round and that was good enough for Yoongi.
Yoongi wanted her to have fun. Plus Jungkook looked like he was about to cry when she said she was leaving. He was most probably half-drunk too.
The rule of the game is everyone takes a turn to say something that the others might have / have done. If it applies to you, you need to fold a good finger. When all ten fingers are folded, you lose.
"Okay, I'll start" Jin hyung raised his hands up with fingers spread. "Who has a significant other, fold your finger."
Several staff who were married or in a relationship groaned and folded one finger. Yoongi, Jin hyung, Hoseok, Jungkook and Hana was saved. Yoongi smiled looking at Hana's hands. He saw Jungkook beaming as well.
"Who has a car, fold your finger." Hoseok attacked.
Jin hyung, Yoongi, Hana and some other staff folded their finger. Yoongi wondered why she didn't drive to work if she had a car.
"Who is wearing something pink, fold your finger." Yoongi continued the game.
Hana, Jin hyung and some other younger staff folded their finger.
"Who wears earrings, fold your finger." Hana smirked.
Yoongi, Jin hyung, and Jungkook complained saying it was too obvious she was trying to make them lose but folded their finger nonetheless. Hoseok simply laughed.
Jungkook took a few seconds to come up with his statement, "Okay, who has a tattoo, fold your finger."
Some staff folded their finger. There were laughter and whines from them. What Yoongi and the rest of the boys were focused on though was the finger Hana folded.
Jungkook stared at her with amazement and respect (since he had always wanted one but was always scolded by the hyungs).
Hana let out a nervous laugh. "Why do think I don't drink?"
