16 - Against All Odds
"So Hana ssi,"
"Just Hana please." Hana told the elder woman.
Yoongi's stepmother smiled. "Hana," she sat down placing the tea cups on the coffee table.
They were done with dinner and Hana helped with the dishes so Yoongi's stepmother could play with Ha Young who was still awake past her bedtime.
"What do you see in Yoongi? Because we've dreaded for years he might not meet anyone who would actually like him."
Yoongi rolled his eyes and Hana laughed.
"Don't roll your eyes at me." Mrs Min scolded him.
"He's sweet. I don't know why people would think otherwise." Hana said.
"Oh God can we please not talk about this." Yoongi groaned.
"Oh my goodness you're blushing!" Mrs Min pointed at him while looking at her husband. "Dear, look! Your son's blushing!"
Yoongi's dad looked at him and smirked.
God damnit!
Ha Young was already asleep by now on the sofa next to Hana. She didn't even stir at his stepmother's high pitched voice.
Wow.
"Stop it mom." Yoongi made a face.
"So Hana, you're okay with spending the rest of your life with this grumpy old man?"
Hana laughed again. "Well,"
"We're not up to that stage yet. Probably might never be." Yoongi continued for her.
"What do you mean?" Mrs Min asked, her facial expression was confused.
"Hana had been married before so it's not something that she would wany to do again. I'm not sure I want it too." Yoongi said nonchalantly.
Hana smiled at him. He turned to see his father's expression... Darkened.
"Hey it's 21st century. Some people don't get married at all and they live happily many years together." His stepmother said to his relief. To Hana's too, Yoongi realized when her shoulder seemed to relax.
"Ha Young probably would want little brothers or sisters then." His father suddenly spoke. "Would that be okay if you're not married?"
"Oh I can't have children." Hana said as she sipped on her tea.
Yoongi realized she just wanted to get it out in the open before his parents get their hopes up.
Now it was Yoongi's stepmother's turn to frown.
Please be nice.
"Are you okay honey? What happened if you don't mind me asking?"
Thank you.
"I was abused by my ex husband."
Mrs Min brought her hands up to her mouth. Her eyes were filled with sympathy.
Yoongi eyed his father who looked down, probably was feeling awkward for not knowing what to say.
"Poor you..."
Yoongi watched as his stepmother went and hugged his girlfriend.
Girlfriend.
Wow.
That was the first time he actually acknowledged it and it felt good. He smiled a little.

Yoongi picked Ha Young up and carried her to her car seat.
Hana was still being crushed by his stepmother and she couldn't even hug her back since her hands were filled with paperbags of food the older lady had packed for them.
Yoongi placed Ha Young in her car seat but simply stared at the seatbelts for a few seconds before prying Hana from his stepmother's suffocating embrace and told her to do the belts since he had no freaking idea how it worked.
"Thanks mom." Yoongi said as he kissed the older woman's forehead. "Bye dad."
"Hmm." His dad replied. "Will you be at the office on Monday?"
Yoongi looked at the older Min. "Yeah. Why?"
"I'll probably come swing by for a while." And then he disappeared inside the house.
"What's up with that?" He asked the lady.
"Not sure. It's probably nothing." She smiled at her stepson.
They drove to Hana's apartment and set Ha Young on her bed, she didn't even stir when he put her down. She was that tired.
"It's normal when kids have too much sugar. They'd be jumping around all hyper and the next thing you know, the battery runs out and you have passed out Ha Young."
Hana and Yoongi were now sprawled in front of the TV but the TV wasn't even turned on.
"I'm sorry." Yoongi said.
"About?" Hana looked up at him.
"The surprise visit to my parents'. The questions they were asking. The ice cream my mom gave Ha Young before dinner."
Hana laughed softly. "None of that bothered me. I'm okay with all that." She frowned a little. "Okay maybe a little bit about the ice cream."
Yoongi chuckled at that. He hugged her again.
"I probably should go now." He got up.
"I'll see you on Monday then." Hana smiled at him.
Yoongi leaned in to kiss her slowly. "Thank you. For tonight."
She smiled wider and Yoongi looked at the dimple on her left cheek. "Thank you to you too. For tonight."
—————
Yoongi was bent over his work desk when a knock came on his door.
"Yeah?"
"Hey son."
"Dad. What brings you here?"
"Let's have lunch together."
Yoongi looked at his father who had been avoiding his eyes ever since he walked into his office.
"Okay sure."
—————
"So how's work?" Mr Min asked, he nervously rearranged the chopsticks on the table.
"Work's good." Yoongi answered. Honestly he was a little bit irritated and wanted to get this over and done with.
"That's good." His dad said, fiddling with his fingers.
"Dad," Yoongi leaned in closer across the table, "what's wrong?"
"Break up with her."
Yoongi stared at his dad. "What?"
"Not getting married is... Fine by me. I think. Your stepmother thinks so too." He sighed. "But not having your own children..."
"Dad," Yoongi tried to phrased his sentence so it wouldn't sound so harsh. "What's wrong with not having my own kids?"
"Yoongi ah." His dad's eyes were soft now. "You're the only one carrying my blood now. I love Namjoon like I love you but you are the one who carries the Min name."
Yoongi kept quiet. Honestly, he understood his father's view on this. No matter how successful he was, the old man was still a little bit old fashioned.
"What I'm saying is, just break it up with her. Find someone who could give you sons or daughters."
"Dad..." Yoongi smiled. "You know nowadays we have tons of medical technology right? If— when the time comes, we could just get pregnant that way, you know."
Mr Min now looked at him sheepishly. "Ah I see." He smiled back at Yoongi. "You really love her."
Yoongi looked at his hands. "I don't know. I haven't said it to her at least. But I like her. A lot."
"That wasn't a question."
Yoongi's eyes were wide at his father. "What do you mean?"
"Yoongi ah. You got your power of observation from me. I don't know why you are always so bad at reading yourself."
"I'm not."
"Listen," the older man rested his elbows on the table, his palms were opened towards Yoongi, "Hana is older than you, a divorcee, a single mother, someone who might not be able to carry children." He smiled a little. "But you wanted to date her still. And the fact that you actually brought her to us meant something."
Yoongi licked his lips. His throat suddenly felt dry so he drank his water. "How do you know you're in love dad?"
"When you still want to fight against all odds."
