blue sargent was living a seemingly perfect life doing what she loved best: traveling. the fact that she was doing it with her father, artemus, made the experience even better than what she originally had planned, which was to travel the world alone once she graduates high school (though those plans would've probably changed because she was only twelve when she made that decision).

but all of it was about to change when artemus told his daughter the news that she would be spending the year with her mother, maura, in henrietta, virginia. as happy as blue was to see maura more than she usually does — which was only for two months every summer — she wasn't ready to live in the town that she'd absolutely dreaded for most of her life.

blue promised herself that she wouldn't get attached to the place; she'll see artemus again once the one year was over and she'd go back to her dream life, so there was no reason to get comfortable in a place that wasn't home to her.

but then she meets the raven boys and her original plans change a bit — well, a lot.
