Chapter 11 - Blue and Red

Blue and red lights were what caught Dylan's attention as he was driving home after football practice. He thought this to be unusual, as the neighbourhood was usually very calm and not much happened around these parts of the city.

The curiosity got the best of him and he pulled his car over to the side to see exactly what was happening.

As he got out of his car, he took a look around at the scene. There was a black car that crashed against a brick half-wall that was running along the sidewalk. The hood of the car was wide open and beat up, with black smoke coming out of it.

There was also some shattered glass surrounding the vehicle, the passenger window was completely smashed, yet there was still no sign of the driver.

As if the universe was listening to Dylan's thoughts, a gurney was pushed right past him with an unconscious body strapped to it.

It took him only a second to realise that the limp body was his cousin Amber. It took a further second for this to register in his brain, to realise the seriousness of the situation. On the third second, the steady flow of dark red blood that was coming from Amber's head caught his attention.

Everything was hitting him all at once, and he did not know how to process all the information. He soon realised that he was glued to his spot and his hands have been shaking slightly; whether from fear or adrenaline, he did not know.

He finally managed to snap out of his trance and rushed over to the paramedics, just as they were loading the gurney with Amber onto the ambulance.

"Hey is she okay? What's wrong with her, what happened?" Dylan shouted as he was running towards the ambulance, gaining the attention of the paramedics.

"Okay sir please calm down and step away" the paramedic has extended his arm towards Dylan, stopping him from coming closer to the ambulance where Amber currently was.

"No, you don't understand, this is my cousin. I need to know if she's okay" he rushed out, making sure they heard him before they left.

"Well call her parents and let them know we're going to South Palm Hospital" the paramedic informed Dylan, just before he slammed the ambulance doors shut, and the ambulance left whilst blaring the loud signal.

Dylan stood there, still unsure of what exactly has happened. Should he call Aunt Charlotte, or should he just call his own parents and let them know what happened. Hell, even he doesn't know what happened.

Before he knew it, his mum's number was dialled on his phone and the phone was placed against his ear. He could faintly hear the ringing of the phone, the steady beeping of the call.

"Dylan honey, can I call you back? I'm with a client right now" said his mother's voice through the speaker on his phone.

"Mum, there's been an emergency"

"Okay Madam, I think that's all the information we need for now. We will be in touch soon to talk to your niece. In the meantime, if you have any questions at all, you've got my phone number" said officer Ripley, shaking Olive's and James' hands after which he walked away with his partner.

The waiting room was relatively quiet, there are some families waiting to hear news from their relatives' doctors. The atmosphere was sad and impatient, but that didn't let Olive or James affect them.

"Okay, honey, you have to tell me everything that happened one more time" Olive insisted whilst looking at a worried Dylan. She knows what happened; he told her at least 7 times by now, but she still felt like there was something missing, like something was not adding up.

"Mum I told you already. I finished football practice and Amber wasn't there, even though I thought she might wait for me to drive her home like she usually does. I didn't think much about it though so I got in my car and started driving home, but on my way I saw the accident and stopped to see what happened, and that's when I saw Amber on a gurney" he said it all on one breath.

"Was there any one else on the scene? We know Amber wasn't the driver so what happened to them?" Olive was thinking out loud, trying to put all the puzzle pieces together.

"No I didn't see anyone else, but maybe the driver was picked up first, you know, before I got there" reasoned Dylan, also trying to make sense of the situation.

"Both of you, just stop!" James joined the conversation, having had enough of his wife and son going back and forth with the same story, "Let's just wait for some news on Amber and we'll worry about the rest later, okay?" he asked them both, hugging Olive to his side.

When Olive told him what happened earlier today, the first thing he thought of was to call Charlotte and let her know what happened. Unfortunately she didn't pick up the phone, so they had to leave a voicemail.

Both him and Olive felt guilty that this has happened on their watch. Amber was their responsibility and they were supposed to take care of her. They were supposed to help her get better, not have her land in the hospital after 3 weeks of her staying with them.

"Family of Amber Cole?" came a voice from behind them to which they turned around and faced a middle-aged man with blonde hair and a white coat.

"Yes, that's us. We're her Auntie and Uncle and this is our son. How's Amber, is everything okay?" Olive rushed out, wanting all the information as soon as possible.

"Your niece sustained quite the injury to her head which caused her to lose some blood. However, we have now stopped the bleeding, and her head CT scan didn't show any major injuries to her head or brain which is good news. As for right now, she is still unconscious and we would like to keep her for a few days for observation" said the doctor, whose name tag said 'Dr. Robbins'.

"Do you know when she's going to wake up?" asked Dylan, looking up at the doctor with hope glistening in his eyes.

"She should be waking up in the next couple of hours, so you can all take a deep calming breath. She should be fine" he said with a smile, looking at the worried family in front of them. "If you would like to see her, she's in room 4565" he added, shaking James' hand and walking away, leaving the family to process the news he just gave them.

They all rushed to the fourth floor where Amber's room was located. They didn't say anything on their way up there. They all just wanted to see Amber and see that she was okay for themselves.

Once they made it to her room, the sight surprised them. Amber was lying unconscious on the hospital bed, hooked up to machines with a white bandage around her head. She looked so peaceful, despite the cuts and bruises on her arms. Her eyes were closed, and her breaths were deep. It looked as if she was sleeping, but they knew better.

While both James and Olive rushed to Amber's side, to hold her hand and to stroke her hair, Dylan stayed back. He didn't dare move, as thoughts consumed him.

Thoughts of guilt.

This was all his fault. If only he drove her home, this would never have happened to her.

If only he didn't have football practice, this would never have happened to her.

If only...

I'm not gonna lie, Grey's Anatomy inspired this chapter :)
