Chapter 17

Holding Kacey's hand, Andy stops at the desk in the hospital. "I'm here to visit Remington Leith-Biersack," he says.

The woman at the desk nods. "Remington is currently in the sick ward. I can show you to his room."

Andy, of course, is worried by this information. "Why? Is he okay?"

"He's not in a critical condition, mainly just there for precautions since he relapsed yesterday. Will you both be visiting?"

The man nods. "If that's okay."

"Of course. We'll have to check with Remington before letting you in, but follow me."

They walk behind the woman down the corridor, Kacey feeling safe with Andy. He let her stay at thier house last night in the spare room, and even made her dinner and lent her some clothes to wear, and though they're too big, she doesn't care. She's just happy to be getting looked after for once. Her hand feels as safe in Andy's as it does in Remington's.

The woman opens a door, telling the two to wait outside as she steps in and tells Remington who's here. "Okay, you're good to go in," she says to Andy and Kacey, "you've got an hour. If something seems wrong just press the red button by the bed."

"Thank you, I will," Andy responds, waiting for her to step out before going in. "Hi sweetheart."

Remington is sitting up on the bed with his sketchbook, smiling when Andy comes into view, smile growing when he sees Kacey. "Greetings."

"Formal," Andy teases, "can I sit?"

The boy nods. "Obviously. I'm touch starved. And this stupid tube is so annoying," he whines, fiddling with it. "Hi Kace." He moves to the side of the bed and Andy sits next to him. "Come sit, I missed you."

Kacey smiles, joining to men on the bed, and Andy pulls Remington into him. "What happened, hon? Bad day?"

"I made myself sick yesterday and then breakfast made me throw up so they put me in here." He shrugs. "I was worried about Kacey and I had a nightmare, so..."

"Worried about me?" The youngest asks.

Remington nods, leaning against Andy. "Course I was. I'm glad you're okay. What happened? How come you're with Andy?"

"Mum destroyed the things you got me and then kicked me and left me on my own so I called Andy. I had to talk to a woman about it and she said I can stay with Andy until it's all sorted out."

The boy is so relieved. "Well Andy is the fucking best. You're in safe hands." He leans over for the glass of water by the bed, sips it, and puts it back down. "He's also weirdly good at making blanket forts."

The words make both Andy and Kacey laugh, and the girl can't help but to look at the tube taped to his face. He looks so frail and breakable. She recalls him saying that he's been in hospital with a feeding tube before, but actually seeing it is different. Scary, almost. It makes her understand why Andy is so gentle and understanding. He has to be, for Remington. "I love Jenny."

"She's the fucking cutest!" Andy goes to talk and Remington puts his hand over his husband's mouth. "Don't say it. EW!" He takes his hand away. "You licked me. That's gross."

"You're the cutest," Andy says, shaking his head in amusement when Remington screws his face up. "See. Cute."

"So is your mum going on trial?"

Kacey shrugs. "Dunno."

Andy hums. "Yep. She is. Two weeks tomorrow."

"Thank the lord. Can you fill up my glass?" Remington waves the empty glass infront of Andy, who takes it and gets off the bed. "Come 'ere Kace, I missed you." He opens his arms for a hug. "Your mother kicked you?"

Settling in his arms, Kacey nods.

"How bad? Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine, Remi. There's a bruise, but it's fine. Are you okay?"

Remington smiles. It's a relief to see her. Like he can breathe again. "I've been better. How're you finding it with Andy? Is he treating you well?"

"I love it. He's so kind," she gushes. The contrast from her her mother to Andy is almost overwhelming. From someone who hardly acknowledged her persence so someone who checks on her and talks to her. It's strange, in an odd way.

The singer adjusts the tube on his face, mostly because it's annoying. "He's so fucking kind. And he's the calmest person in the world."

"Talking about me?" Andy asks, glass of water in hand.

"Yes. Only bad things, don't worry."

"Mm, charming. Here's the water."

"Thanks!" He watches Andy sit back beside him. "Have you spoken to my brothers?"

Fingers drawing over Remington's knuckles, Andy hums. "Yep. I shouted at them again and told them to get themselves together and they sat there ashamed of themselves."

Remington finds that funny. "Good. You're a good husband"

"Right back at you. Hey, I was teaching Kace how to play the piano last night. She's good."

Yawning, Remington sinks down into the bed and lies with his head in Andy's lap. "The meds make me so sleepy," he says, yawning again. "I feel like we're a family. You, me, and Kace. We're like a family."

Andy smiles at Kacey as he plays with his lover's hair. "We are a family, sweetie."

The words make Kacey's heart leap excitedly. She's never felt like she belonged anywhere, not like this. And the connection these two men have, the love they share, the utter adoration; it makes her realise how beautiful love can be, how there are people who are so happy together and who would do anything for eachother. She thinks it's such a shame that her mother never found that, how she drifts from man to man aimlessly, no real feelings. Just something to keep her company. Because having a daughter was never enough. Because being responsible for another person didn't fulfill her the way it would fulfill Remington and Andy. Because she could never just settle for what she already has. She always wants more. Another drink. Another cigarette. Another man. Another one night stand.

But never a daughter.

For the third time, Remington yawns, feeling relaxed enough to sleep now he knows Kacey is fine and he's with Andy. "'s a twenty six," he mumbles, "'m fallin' 'sleep."

Andy sees how happy Kacey is to be in their gentle presence. "Go to sleep, princess. I love you."

"Love you too," Remington mumbles, eyes closed, one hand in Andy's, the other held against his chest like how a child holds a stuffed bear.

With Remington asleep, Andy carefully lets go of his hand and lifts him off his lap so he can get out of the bed. He holds a hand out for Kacey, who takes it and follows him out of the room. "We should let him sleep. We can stop on the way back for some lunch if you like."

She nods but is thinking about something else. "Okay," she agrees.

Andy unlocks the car once they're outside, waiting for Kacey to do up her seatbelt before turning the key. "It was good to see him. He needed that."

"Was he really worried about me?"

The man glances at her as he's pulling onto the main road. "Absolutely. He tends to use all his energy worrying about everyone else and never himself. Once he cares about someone, he would do anything for them, even if it meant practically killing himself to do it. It happens with his fans. They tear his life apart and he still does so much for them. He played a tour when he wasn't eating and ended up collapsing in front of fans and being taken to hospital. We've been working on it for years."

"Is his band famous?"

"Yeah. They've got a million listeners on spotify and their fanbase is very intense. Remington is also the one in the spotlight because he's the singer, and the pressure isn't really good for him, but he wouldn't give it up for the world. Sometimes it's like he doesn't think about himself at all."

Kacey finds it hard to get her head around it all. "What do you mean, the fanbase is intense?"

"People seem to love finding any little thing to criticise them for. Remington opened up about his abuse and his anorexia and was accused of being dramatic. There are confession pages where people can send in anonymous messages and some of them are awful. A while ago Remington asked them all to be taken down and had a mental breakdown over them, yet they still exist. They were attacked for cancelling tours even though he was literally about to kill himself and he needed time off, attacked because he couldn't hug fans, and attacked for being with me because apparently he's only with me for the fame."

"Why would he be with you for fame?"

"Oh, I'm in a band, too. Black Veil Brides. I have some solo stuff, too, and they opened for me a couple of years ago. That's how we met."

The girl feels like she is in heaven. Both Remington and Andy are musicians, and they seem like the most genuine, understanding people ever. "What's it like being famous?"

"Sometimes I love it, sometimes I just wanna be able to go on holiday and not have it posted about. We got married in Greece and the theories about it were fucking stupid. Even now, some people still accuse us of lying about our relationship for the media."

Kacey watches cars pass by. "You know when you came to pick me up yesterday and you said to tell them my dad's coming if they asked?"

Andy hums.

"Did you mean it?"

"That I'm your dad?"

Slowly, she nods, hesitant but desperate for an answer. She's hardly spent two days with Andy and she knows that she wants him as a parent.

"Course I did. Remington already agreed that we'd adopt you if they found your mum an unsafe carer."

Kacey can't believe it. They want her. Someone actually wants her.
