Chapter 13

Kacey goes to talk to her therapist after a long hug with Remington, and while she's gone, the singer goes to ask to use the phone to call Andy. He leans against the wall after dialing the man, waiting for him to pick up.

"Hello?" Andy answers, the number showing up as unknown on his phone.

"Hi Andy!"

"Sweetheart, hi! This is unexpected."

Remington smiles. "So you know Kacey?"

The older hums.

"Okay, so it's her birthday tomorrow, and her mum has got her basically nothing for her past birthdays. So can you buy her something and bring it when you visit?"

"Sure. What does she like?"

"Maybe a colouring book or something. Oh! And she wants to learn the piano so-like-a book to help with that?"

Andy writes these down on the back of a reciept. "What about some pens for the colouring book, too?"

"Yeah, good idea. Andy, I feel so fucking bad for her. Her mum is awful. Kacey told me she's left her home alone overnight a lot and she had to walk to school by herself when she was ten. She nearly got hit by a car and her mum didn't care."

"You really care about her, don't you?"

"She's like my fucking daughter, Andy. She has to go home next week and she's so fucking scared. Like-she was sobbing about it earlier." He sighs. "I told her I'd give her your number incase she needs to talk to someone, okay? You'll reply to her if she texts you, won't you?"

The way Remington talks about Kacey is so beautiful to Andy. "Of course I will, honey. You're such a good person, you know that?"

Remington pushes a hand through his hair. "So you'll bring the things tomorrow?"

"Yep. Your brother's are coming with me, by the way. So be ready for that."

The boy groans.

"I know. You don't wanna see them. But sweetie, you gotta let them apologise."

"Oh fuck off. I don't care."

Andy shakes his head, amused at Remington's whining. "I did have a go at them, if that helps."

"That does help. Did you shout?"

"Oh yes. I was very angry."

Remington smiles to himself. "Andy?"

"Hmm?"

"I'm really worried about what's gonna happen to her."

"I know. Look, hon, I'm gonna get in contact with social services, okay? You really don't sound happy with her going back to her mother and I can't let her go back if she's being neglected. It's not right at all."

The boy breathes out in relief. "Oh my God, thank you."

"I'll see you tomorrow, pretty."

"Okay, but if my brothers come I'm gonna be mad."

Andy chuckles. "I know. I love you. Bye!"

After dinner Remington and Kacey sit in his room, finishing off the colouring they've been doing, and Remington is told by a doctor he's seen around but never really spoken to come outside for a moment. "Can you come with me?" The man asks, "I'm Kacey's therapist. I need to talk to you about something."

"Okay," Remington agrees, confused but going along with it. He follows the doctor into his office and is told to sit down. "What is it?"

"Okay, this is heavy stuff, so I need to check you're in an okay place mentally. If you're not, say, and I can talk about this with you at a different time."

"No, I'm good."

The therapist is looking at a piece of paper on the desk. "I know you and Kacey have grown to be pretty close in the time you've been here. She talks about you in all the sessions I have with her."

Remington nods.

"And I'm sure you're aware that she's leaving next week?"

He nods again.

"Okay. We've had a call from social services. Her mother has been anonymously reported for abuse and neglect. Do you know anything about this? She hasn't mentioned anything like it to me, or to anyone else here, so we're just trying to get to the bottom of it before we take action."

Remington mentally thanks Andy for reporting Kacey's mum. "She told me a load of shit that her mum's put her through. She started crying pretty hard, saying she's scared of going home and that her mum makes her feel invisible. I told Andy, my husband, because it's been bugging me, and he said he'd call social services, so..."

"You realise this is a very serious accusation?"

"I know. But I'm really worried about what will happen if she's sent home. She said her mum leaves her home alone and that she used her cigarrete lighter to burn herself. Her mum didn't even notice. She forgot about her birthdays and they didn't even have a home this last year because she wasn't paying rent."

The man is writing this down as they talk. "Thank you for telling me that. You're doing a great job with her, Remington. You're a natural father."

"I am?"

"Absolutely. She adores you. And that's also what I wanted to talk about. Obviously her mother is gonna be investigated, so she will have to go back home until we can be sure these accusations are true. But if they are, and she needs to be put up for adoption, would you think about becoming her adoptive parent?"

Remington nods straight away. "I'd do it," he says, "one hunderd percent. Me and Andy, we'd adopt her."
