Chapter 10

Trigger warning.

Kacey ends up falling asleep in Remington's lap, leaving the singer to stroke her hair and wonder what she likes so much about him. He can't think of anything she'd like, but clearly there's something. Her head is against his shoulder, green eyes closed, still red from crying. Her hair is a strawberry blonde colour, falling over her shoulders in gentle waves.

Remington tries to get his head around why the hell his brothers were in that band. It doesn't make sense. They promised they would wait and they promised they wouldn't share that song, and they broke both. How do they think that what they are doing is okay? What the hell?

He doesn't move Kacey off him. She seems comfortable and obviously she needs someone to take care of her and love her. And Remington does love her. He should tell her that. When she wakes up, he'll tell her.

His therapist comes in to check he's okay after tonight's incident, smiling at the sight of the young girl in his lap and giving him the evening's medication with a glass of water. He tells Remington he'll have to wake Kacey up if she doesn't so she can go back to her room for bed and the boy just nods, even though he doesn't want to do that. He'd hapilly let her sleep here all night if it makes her happy.

At nearly ten o'clock Remington puts his book down. "Kacey, sweetie," he says, stroking her hair again. "Honey, wake up."

The girl whines and opens her eyes slightly. "Don't want to," she mumbles.

"You can go back to sleep in your bed, okay?"

She rubs her eyes. "But I wanna stay here."

Remington plays with a few strands of her hair. "I know. You can come see me in the morning. We can talk about your mum's visit if you like."

"Promise?" She looks up at him and yawns.

"I promise. Do you wanna know something?"

Kacey yawns again, nodding.

The singer smiles gently. "I love you."

Her eyes brighten up and she looks at him like he's the most important thing in the world. "You do?"

"Mhm. Now let's get you to bed. I'll walk with you to your room."

Kacey throws her arms around him. "No one's ever loved me before," she says into his shoulder, "I love you."

Remington gets off the bed with her in his arms, deciding the easiest thing is to carry her to her room. "Which way am I going?" He asks, and Kacey points down the corridor. "You were crying pretty hard earlier. Did it go really bad?"

"Yes. You were crying, too."

He walks slowly. "Yeah, my brothers are being dicks again. It's okay. Where now?"

Kacey motions towards the stairs. "Up there," she says through a yawn, "Remi?"

"Hmm?"

"Can I call you that?"

The man steps up the stairs. "Course you can."

She's falling asleep again. "You're so nice." The words are soft, slurred together in a sleepy, innocent voice.

"Stay awake a moment longer for me, sweetie. Which room is yours?"

"There's a sticker on the door," she mumbles, "of a cat."

Remington smiles, looking at all the doors. "A cat, huh? Who put that there?"

Kacey yawns. "Me. Mum won't let me have a cat."

"We've got a cat at home, she's called Jenny."

"I want to go to your house."

He sees the sticker and knocks on the door while being careful not to drop the girl. "You would fit right in," he says, a voice from inside telling him to come in. "Here we are, Kace." Remington opens the door with one hand and smiles at the girl who's sitting up in one of the two beds. "Hey, I'm just putting Kacey to bed," he says quietly. She nods as he lies Kacey down on the empty bed, looking back at the magazine in her hands. Remington takes Kacey's shoes off and leaves the on the floor by her bed, tucking the covers around her and whispering, "sleep well."

The next day Andy comes to visit, and Remington collapses into his arms sobbing, confusing the man. "What's wrong?" Andy asks, sitting down with Remington in his lap.

The boy shakes his head. "They didn't-they didn't tell you?" He grabs Andy's hand and grips it.

"Who, sweetheart? Has something happened?"

"My brothers."

Andy frowns. "No, I haven't spoken to them for a few days. Why? What happened?" He rubs Remington's back.

Remington tries to tell him what happened but the words get stuck in his throat and he sobs loudly into his husband's shoulder.

"Oh baby, what's going on? You're shaking."

Again, Remington just shakes his head.

"Talk to me, honey, what did they do?"

"They're so mean," Remingto cries, "I just wanted one nice night and they ruined it!"

Andy rubs his fingers over Remington's hand. "What happened?"

"I had a panic attack," he goes on, "and collapsed."

"You collapsed?"

Remington nods. "Andy, they're so mean!" He sounds so hurt.

Saddended, Andy kisses Remington's head. "What did they do?"

The boy lifts his head up and looks at Andy, who wipes under his eyes. "They're in another band!"

"What?"

"They're in another band! And they played my song that I told them I didn't want them to share! The one I played to you."

Andy's eyes widen. He can't process this. "They what? Fucking hell, that's awful. I'm so sorry. That's so disrespectful."

Remington nods. "They lied!"

"I'll talk to them, okay? Harshly."

"Shout at them! Make them fucking cry! Because they made me collapse."

The man shakes his head in desbelief. God, is he gonna be having some words with them later.
