Trigger warning : mentions of eating disorders.
"He's back!" Remington announces excitedly, bounding into Abigail's house.
The woman closes the door, follows him through. "Andy?" She asks, sitting down.
"Andy!"
"When did that happen?"
"Last night," Remington explains, "I was crawling home and he drove past."
Abigail raises an eyebrow. "You were crawling home? Last night? In the rain?"
Remington nods.
"How did it come to that?"
"Doesn't matter 'cause he's back!"
The older pours him a glass of water. "It's great, Remington, but we need to talk about why you were crawling home in the rain."
"But it doesn't matter."
Abigail shakes her head. "It definitely matters."
Remington pouts. "Well now you're ruining my good mood," he complains.
"It's okay to be excited because he's back, but it doesn't magically make everything else okay. Surely you were crawling home in the rain for a reason, no?"
"Yes, but-"
"Remington, I understand your excitement, and I need you to understand that Andy being back doesn't fix everything. Just like you still had things going on when he was here six months ago."
The boy looks down. "But can't I at least enjoy it before you make me talk about everything wrong with me?"
"I'm not saying you can't enjoy it, I just want you to be aware that the excitement will wear off and you may possibly feel worse than you did."
"Well fuck you. You're supposed to make me feel better, not worse." He folds his arms and scowls.
"Tell me why you were crawling home, Remington."
"I don't want to."
"Look, I'm here to help you. You know that."
Remington shakes his head.
"Okay, let's try this. How did seeing Andy again make you feel?" She watches him pick up the water, sip it, and stay quiet. "Remington, it's important you talk to me."
"I felt guilty."
"Why's that?"
"'cause I fucked his life up." He puts the glass down. "See, you ruined my good mood."
Abigail sighs. "Have you two spoken about why he left?"
Remington nods.
"And how did that go?"
"Fine. It went fine."
"You sound hesitant, Remington. How did it go?"
The boy huffs. "It went fine."
"You know I don't believe you."
"He said we're gonna be okay but he was touching his collar."
"Okay. Can you explain what that suggests?"
Remington rubs his eyes. "Just-he always does that when he's not okay." He looks down. "Or when he's lying."
Abigail leans forwards. "You think he was lying?"
"I don't know anymore."
The next day, Remington goes to group therapy, where he's been regularly going since Andy left. At the end of the hour, he's rinsing out the mug which he was drinking coffee from, since there's a drinks machine in the rom they use, and is approached by someone who joined this week.
"Remington, right?" The man asks.
"Oh, yeah, hi. Marcus?"
"That's me."
Remington smiles. "So how come you're here?" He puts the mug upside down on the side by the sink.
"Anorexia, you?"
"Same."
Marcus hums. "How long've you been coming?"
"Six months."
"Is it worth it?"
"I think so." He pulls his phone from his pocket, replies to a text from Andy about where one of his hoodies is. "Why? Are you doubting it?"
The man shrugs. "I don't know. My therapist said I should try it."
"Same here. I wouldn't have if she didn't say to."
"So she's persuasive, then?"
"I just trust her."
Marcus hums. "So how long have you had it?"
"Sorry?"
"Anorexia. How long?"
Remington is a little put off by the question and the way it was worded, as though the disorder just popped up one day out of no where. "Dunno really. Could be two years, could be six."
"Huh?"
"Well it could've developed at any point after meeting me abusive ex. I don't know when."
"Six years is a long time," Marcus says.
Remington shrugs.
"From one anorexic to another, have you ever actually stopped eating?"
"If you're about to ask me how, don't. I won't tell you. It fucked everything up. Nearly lost me my husband. See you next week."
