It was once again time for the Spring ball that the Hargreeves held annually at their ancestral hall, maids and butlers running amuck to complete their designated tasks. Lord and Lady Hargreeves were hard at work organising the ball, letting the siblings entertain themselves before the guests all arrived at the end of the week.
The Hargreeves and the sisters were playing Pall Mall, Five's siblings taunting him that (y/n) had managed to grab his special mallet and now his strikes were coming up short. "I would dare say that without your precious mallet brother, it seems that you cannot perform like before." Ben chuckles as Five sighs when his ball goes past the wicket.
"Yes!" (y/n) jumps in joy as she manages to get her ball through the wicket, Five looking over at her as she gets smothered in hugs by Allison and Klaus. He smiles at the scene, unknowing of Viktor watching him. "Go (s/n)!" the sisters cheer each other on, the others taking their turn until it was (y/n)'s turn again.
"Now you have two choices (y/n); go for the wicket or send Five off his course. I'd rather piss him off and send his ball of course." Diego muses and she winks at him.
"I like that idea."
"(y/n) don't-" she hits her ball and it collides into Five's which flies through the barrage of trees and into the forest.
"Yes!" the siblings all cheer the Viscountess' move as Luther goes to take his turn.
"Do not celebrate so soon." He hits his ball and it sends (y/n)'s through the very same forest that Five's ball flew through.
"Oh, what a bloody good shot brother!" Five grins out, smirking at (y/n) who pouts, pushing down the fluttering feeling in his stomach seeing her pink lips puff in annoyance.
"It looks like the two of you might have to fetch them, or would you rather cut from the game?" Klaus snickers as (y/n) and Five look at each other.
"Oh, I'm getting my ball alright."
"After you then." the siblings chuckle as they watch Five and (y/n) go off into the forest before continuing their game.
"How far did that brother of yours hit my ball?"
"I hope it went further than mine-"
"-ah shit.. I ." (y/n) whispers, pausing to see that her ball along with Five's had fallen into a large puddle of mud. "So... what do you want to do? Take them out?"
"And cheat? I'd rather not." Five huffs out as he stomps towards the puddle, trying to think of a way to get his ball out.
"Well, no point in waiting around." (y/n) unclips her skirt, revealing the pants she was wearing underneath.
"Wait-" Five quickly averts his eyes with his cheeks bright red.
"Hold this, and please don't get it dirty." he watches with wide eyes as (y/n) rolls up her pants and removes her shoes, walking into the mud. He gulps seeing (y/n) bend over, her hair falling over one shoulder as she bites her lip in concentration. There was a heat in Five's body as she looks over at him briefly to make sure he didn't dirty her clothes before hitting the ball out of the mud. "Your play, Sir Hargreeves. Unless you don't want to ruin your boots." (y/n) smirks seeing him narrow his eyes at her from using the lesser title before carefully setting down her clothes on a hanging branch.
"Do not worry about my boots." She was surprised that he showed great care for her belongings, stepping into the puddle to hit his ball out. Five hits his ball and grins at (y/n) who rolls her eyes with a smile, him walking out of the puddle but (y/n) struggled to get her foot out.
"Shit... I think I'm stuck."
"Just pull."
"I am!" (y/n) huffs out, using her mallet to try and get out. "My foot is sunken in!" Five snickers and she glares at him. "Are you really going to laugh at me and not help me?"
"Maybe I should just leave you here too."
"Five for the love of god, fucking help me out of here this instance!" Five shudders as (y/n) says his name, a warm feeling in his chest. "Five!"
"Ok!" he stomps back into the puddle, grabbing hold of her arm. "Ready?"
"Yeah..." Five tries to pull the girl out but his feet also starts to sink in, losing his balance. "Wait-" both Viscount and Viscountess gasp as they topple over, falling into the mud.
(y/n) cracks a smile as Five groans in annoyance. "This is not funny."
"I didn't say it was." (y/n) looks at Five and the both of them burst out laughing, taking their gloves off and wiping the mud off their faces. "Ok, let's go. The others will be waiting for us." (y/n) carefully stands up, holding out her hand to help Five on his feet. He grabs her arm and stands up but he felt himself being disorientated and starts to fall back again. "Five!" (y/n) gasps out as he didn't let go of her arm, pulling her down with him again.
There was a brief moment of pause as Five looked up at the girl that hovered over him, her eyes wide in shock with her cheeks a beautiful pink hue. The sun glinted off from her doe eyes and Five couldn't help himself to drift his gaze to her lips. She was undeniably beautiful, her hair fallen over one shoulder and her blouse drifting down her arms that held his shoulders. Five leaned up and carefully wiped the mud near her lips, earning a quiet hitch from (y/n).
"Five..." he breaks out of his trance and quickly moves his hand away from her cheek, her quickly getting up from Five and standing next to him. (y/n) hears cheering in the background as Five stands up and he helps her across the puddle. "Uh, it looks like the game is over..."
"It would seem so..." (y/n) went behind a tree to take her ruined pants off, wiping off the rest of the dirt on her body before clipping on her skirt and putting her shoes back on. Being somewhat clean, she walks back out to see Five frowning as he thought over something quietly. "You know that I did not mean anything by my words from that party." (y/n) narrows her eyes at Five.
"Sure-"
"-please, I know you are still mad at me so tell me, what I can do to win your approval."
"I'm not angry at you out of spite. I only want what's best for my little sister and ensure that she is happy. I hoped you would understand my position as a Viscountess and having a sister to protect."
"I do... I do understand that it is our responsibility to do so." Five nods. He just wanted to end the animosity between him and (y/n), to befriend her. More so, he wanted to be closer to her instead of being distant guests. "Then can we put our past hostility behind us and allow me to prove myself to you." (y/n) stands before Five, her chest feeling heavy at his words. "Let me prove to you that I can offer you sister all the happiness and security she deserves." (y/n) frowns, feeling her heart ache suddenly.
"I..." (y/n) hears her sister yell out that she won the game, smiling as she heard the Hargreeves cheer for her and she knows that she would be happy here when it came time for her to leave. "I will grant you this one favour. Truce?" Five smiles, holding (y/n)'s hand that she had reached out for him to shake.
"Truce." (y/n) walks off with her mallet and ball as Five watched her from the distance. He couldn't understand why he had sinking feeling in his chest.
The warm evening breeze drifted over the fields of grass as the clear blue sky blanketed over the land, (y/n) taking a walk through the Hargreeves' vast property. She just needed to get away from all the talk about Five this and Five that from her little sister. She had been talking her ear off about how kind and how much of a good listener he was, about how he was genuinely interested in her and her hobbies. (y/n) tried to be supportive but she couldn't help the weighted feeling on her chest. She didn't know why she felt like this when the topic of Five came up. The sun was going to start setting soon so she decided to head back to the Hargreeves' ancestral home.
The Hargreeves ancestral home was standing tall and quiet, empty of life since the maids and the butlers were away along with the Hargreeves family but Five didn't know this when he woke up from his nap. He walked around the eerily quiet halls, calling out for his siblings but getting no such reply. There was a panic that settled on his heart, one of his many nightmares coming true of being left alone as he searched for the sisters.
"Mother? Viktor? (y/n)?" Five was dead set worried now, running through the house and not realising that (y/n) had gotten home to freshen up. He was hyperventilating now when he didn't see any form of life, barging into (y/n)'s room just as she put on a robe.
"Five!?"
"(y/n)-you-" Five gasps out and (y/n) pushes aside her anger that he had barged into her room when she saw how panicked he was.
"Hey, hey. It's ok, everything is ok." she rushes over to Five, holding his hands in hers as he tried to breathe. Five felt the world spin around him and his chest burned from the lack of air. "You need to go outside." (y/n) pulls Five out onto her balcony, letting him take in the country air. "Look at me, I'm here ok. You're alright, everything is ok."
"I thought you-everyone was gone." Five takes in deep breaths as (y/n) takes his hand and places it on his heart along with hers so he could feel his heartbeat sync with hers.
"I'm right here." Five was finally able to get air in his lungs, looking down at (y/n) to see her staring with worry in her eyes. His breath hitches again but not from the panic but from how close she was to him, being able to smell that same illustrious lily scent from her. "I'm not leaving you, I'm right here ok Five. Just breathe." (y/n) whispers, letting him calm down from his attack. He glances his gaze over her face, feeling her faint breaths against his chin and the heat from her body. He lets his hand go from his chest, brushing (y/n)'s hair back away from her face that had fallen from her braids, the other still on her chest to hear her heartbeat quicken beneath his hand.
(y/n) was shocked by Five's action, quickly stepping away from him. "(y/n)-"
"-you can't be in here, you shouldn't be doing this, I shouldn't be doing this. This is not right-"
"-(y/n) wait-" Five was about to reach out to her as she runs away but freezes when he hears his family call out that they had come back from shopping.
(Y/n) hides in a random room, slamming the door behind her as her back pressed against the wood. Her chest heaved from panic and her mind jumbled as her fingers gently touched her cheek where Fives hand brushed her hair back, the skin heating from the memory. She couldn't... she shouldn't. No, he was the man her sister was in love with, she wouldn't hurt her. Not her only family.
(Y/n) waited for a couple of minutes before returning to her room, letting out a sigh of relief that Five wasn't there before getting dressed for dinner. She quickly ran down the stairs, hoping to get a spot next to one of the Hargreeves siblings for the night.
Oh, thank god.
There were three spots available, the frantic Viscountess taking the seat that had an empty spot on her left which was at the end of the table, her back against the wall of the mansion. Allison who was next to (y/n) spoke eagerly to Viktor eagerly before greeting Luther who soon walked into the dining room.
Please, please...
(Y/n) hopes he would take the seat next to her but takes the empty one just opposite her at the table, looking at who was present besides Lady Grace and Lord Hargreeves.
Shit...
Five soon walked in, tugging on his cuffs and he looks up to see (y/n) look at him before quickly turning her gaze. He saw the last empty spot next to her and clenched his jaw before moving behind his siblings to his seat.
(Y/n) heart raced the closer Five neared her, her heart jumping in her chest and her breath hitching as he gently held her waist to move past her. Five hears (Y/n)'s breath hitch as he walks behind her, his grasp tightening on her waist for a quick second before lingering his touch on her back when he moves to his seat.
(Y/n) hides the pink hue in her cheek with her hair, her fingers brushing against where Five held her waist before breaking out of her trance when Lady Grace and Lord Hargreeves arrived for dinner. They signalled permission for everyone to sit and Five waited for (y/n) to be comfortable before pushing her chair in as the gentleman he was.
Five was hoping he could talk to her, to talk about what had transpired between them in (y/n)'s room but she blatantly ignored him throughout the dinner. "Oh dear bestie of mine, can you please pass the greens?" Klaus smiles sickly sweet at (y/n) who blinks at him. He knew something was going on between her and his younger brother, grinning widely at his master plan.
Five stared at (y/n), breathing in the sweet lily scent that emanated from her as she stood up to reach over for the bowl of greens. Heat spread over Five's cheeks when he saw her bend over him, quickly looking away as she sat back down.
Klaus enjoyed the embarrassed look as he took some of the greens, holding the bowl back out for one of the two to put it back in its original place. "You can keep it there-"
"-there's not enough space dear brother." Klaus cuts off Five who sighs and goes to get the bowl. The mischievous older brother jerks the bowl back more and Five stumbles a bit, grabbing hold of what he thought was the table for balance until he heard a quiet gasp beneath him. He looks down to see that (y/n) was frozen, his hand grasping her thigh. Five quickly grabs the bowl and sits back down, both Viscountess and Viscount not looking at each other the whole of dinner with pink faces.
