Another glorious Social Season night, another extravagant ball but only this time, it was hosted by the Queen herself. The magnificent Soiree that will forever be incomparable. The gardens were eerily quiet and deserted but that did not mean that every single family of the ton was not at the Soiree, in fact, they happily enjoyed themselves within the modest mansion as music filtered past the doors that were opened by the royal guards.
(y/n) walked in with her sister and the Hargreeves' family, her head held high as she ignored the passive-aggressive look from Five who stood next to her. Couples were waltzing together on the dancefloor, the guards announcing the presence of the Hargreeves and the (l/n) family as everyone walked down the stairs except for Five and (y/n). The Viscountess watched over her sister as she gained the attention of every eligible man and she was happy with the outcome.
"Are you just going to stand there like some old prude?" Five smirks lightly at his jest at the girl next to him who sneered at him. He would be lying to himself if he didn't think that the Viscountess looked beautiful in her gown.
"Say whatever you want about me but remember my words, stay away from my sister." she seethes before walking past Five and bumping into his shoulder. He falters from the movement, his senses filled with the glorious floral scent that drifted from the oldest sister, that heavenly lily scent that made his head spin and has him leaving the room whenever she was residing in it or he would not be able to contain himself.
(y/n) walked towards her sister and Lady Grace, all three bowing before the Queen who smiles at them. "I do hope you are finding everything in town to your satisfaction, Viscountess (l/n)."
"Indeed I am your Majesty. This town is absolutely beautiful."
"I am pleased to hear that. Enjoy your night ladies." The Queen nods to the girls before they walk off again to let her and Lady Grace talk. Five was on the other side of the room, drinking whiskey with his brothers as he scowled at the lack of eligible ladies that were to his standard. His eyes cast over the girls before pausing at the Viscountess, seeing her smile as she talked with her little sister. She only smiled around her and what a lovely smile it was. The softness of her lips turned up slightly took Five's breath away as this was the first time he saw (y/n) smile with actual joy in her eyes.
"Is there finally a lady that has managed to catch your attention brother?" Luther muses and quickly diverts his gaze, glaring at his oldest brother.
"Hush, you." Five walks off before he could get pulled into a dance, looking busy as he held his drink and stood closer to the sisters that talked together.
"What has gotten your attention sister?"
"There's a field of flowers outside..." (y/n) had a wanting look in her eyes and Five follows her gaze to see fields of tall yellow blooms silently waving with the breeze. "Nevermind that, you should go dance with someone." (y/n) hinted to her sister as a man came forward asking for her sibling's hand. "Go on." she grins, watching her little sister enjoy herself as she danced with the young gentlemen on the dancefloor.
(y/n) struggled to keep the smile on her face, falling to leave a cold expression as she drank her whiskey and stared out to the field again. Five wondered why she wanted to go out to the fields so bad, swept up by the ladies that suddenly barraged him for a dance. Before he could be pulled onto the dance floor, Five sighs in relief when the Queen's Guards, announce that she was going to name the Diamond of the Season.
"Your presence is noted, and your Queen most appreciative. Allow it to be my honour to present to you the season's diamond... Miss (s/f/n)!" (y/n)'s blood ran cold as the applause waved over her head, hearing her sister gasp next to her in joy. Of course, she was excited for her little sister but now she was worried about the men that wouldn't treat her well.
"(s/n) wait-" a guard took her by the arm to the middle of the room before (y/n) could stop her, glancing over at Five who had a determined look on his face.
He wouldn't. Not after warning him.
"You look at her the way I look at a finished musical piece, brother." Viktor chuckles lightly.
"Every man needs a muse, does he not?" Five says before walking to (s/n) with the other gentlemen, his mind decided that he should now fulfil his duties of being Viscount with the Seasons Diamond now announced. He ignores the glare from (y/n), asking the youngest sister of honouring him with a dance. (y/n) watched with blazing fury, the glass in her hand cracking but she sets it down before it shatters.
"I see your sister and my son being favourable to one another." Lady Grace stands next to the Viscountess as she wipes the glare from her face to greet the Lady with a calm nod.
"Yes... That I can see..."
"How wonderful would it be if our families joined? That would be so lovely, would it not?" (y/n) doesn't say anything, waiting for her sister to come back.
"(y/n)-"
"-come with me to the retirement room." (y/n) drags her sister away, looking back over her shoulders to sneer at Five. "Stay away from that asshole."
"(y/n)! Wake up! Wake up!" the girl groans in her bed as she hides beneath the blankets, exhausted from staying up all night doing her work.
"What? It's too early for this shit." the youngest sister keeps shaking the older one until she gets fed up and looks at her over the blankets. "What?"
"The Hargreeves is taking us to a travelling carnival that has come to town!"
"That's nice. I'm exhausted, you go ahead-"
"-no I want you to come with! It has been too long since we went to an amusement park as a family!" (y/n) bristles from the statement, sighing out before sitting up.
"Alright, I'll come. Just go down and let Lady Grace know I will be ready in a couple of minutes." (s/n) squeals happily and (y/n) smiles softly, only wanting her little sister to have good memories from now on. She runs away to tell the Hargreeves family the good news as (y/n) gets ready, dressing in her suit as she usually does when she had to go out in society. A disguise as a male and an armour she uses to protect herself.
"What's taking her so long?" Five huffs out as he waits in the panting room with his family, reading the newspaper.
"Is she coming?" he looks up to see his mother talk to the youngest sister and he quickly stands up.
"She is! Please give her a couple of minutes to get ready." (s/n) smiles happily, looking over at Five who bows to her.
"Morning Miss (s/n)."
"Good morning Viscount Hargreeves." The sister blushes as he takes her hand and kisses the back of it. Ever since the youngest (l/n) was announced the Diamond of the Season, every man, including Five Hargreeves, has been taking every chance to woo her. "Are you excited to go to the carnival?"
"It is one of my family's favourite activities so I try to organise it for them as much as I can, so yes, I am looking forward to it."
"Well, I am excited to even go to one. My sister and I have never had the time to go to a carnival." Five frowns lightly, wondering why (y/n) never went to a carnival before. Surely she must have gone when she was little.
"Well, if you would like, I can take you around the activities."
"I would love that, thank you Viscount Hargreeves." Five nods, giving a tight smile until he heard the sound of boots walking towards the Painting Room. His eyes widen as he sees (y/n) walk into the room, fixing her gloves that pull over her slender fingers which moves her feathered hat on her head. She was wearing a suit like one she wore on the day they first met. There was a dark hooded gaze from the Viscountess as she peers at him from beneath her hat that sends a shiver down his spine.
"So I hear we are going to a carnival?" (y/n) speaks up, sudden authority in her voice that challenges Five.
"Yes, the carriages have been waiting outside for a long time." (y/n) glares at him and he was shocked that she didn't send him a sharp sarcastic response back to his comment as she goes to her sister, taking her to the carriages with the rest of his family.
"I see the older sister is going to be a thorn at your side if you wish to pursue the Diamond of the Season." Diego muses and Five rolls his eyes at his brother, getting into the carriage with the sisters.
"A protective thorn that I hope you do not insult in any way brother." Viktor narrows his eyes at his younger brother as he gets into the carriage as well with Allison.
"(y/n), are you ok?" Allison asks the girl and she smiles tiredly which Five notices.
"I'm alright, just a late night."
"Are you sure? You missed on breaking your fast with us." Viktor says and Five notices how exhausted she looked but kept a smile on her face for her sister who held her hand.
"Don't worry about me, I'll have something at the carnival." Five frowns from how tired she looked as she stares out the window the entire time to the carnival as everyone else was excited about the activities to come. The carriage came to a stop at the entrance and everyone got out first except for Five and (y/n).
"Are you sure you are ok?" he held her arm but was given a cold glare.
"What do you care?" she rips her arm from Five's grip and there was a sinking feeling in his chest as he steps out. He decided that it would be best to just enjoy the day with his family and to show (s/n) around the activities as he promised.
"Miss (s/n)." Five holds out his arm despite the cold glare he received from her older sister.
"(s/n), what did I tell you?" (y/n) warns her sister, wondering why she was willingly going with the asshole after what she told him about what happened that night. That night Sir Hargreeves called women cattle.
"I will be alright-"
"-then I will come with you." Five inwardly groans that he would not be able to converse with (s/n) if the Viscountess was there hounding him.
"Wonderful! Viscount Hargreeves, I hope that will be alright with you."
"It is no problem for me." Five smiles at (y/n) who rolls her eyes at him, walking beside (s/n) as she was in the middle. The youngest (l/n) and the youngest Hargreeves conversed while (y/n) stayed silent, looking over at all the activities and stalls that were around her. Five snuck glances every now and then at the oldest sister to see a gleam of excitement in her eyes, a childlike wonder surfacing from being buried. He smiled softly at how adorable she seemed at the moment, wondering why she didn't just go off to play some of the games.
"As I live and breathe, is that really Five Hargreeves with a woman?" A tall man walks up to Five, a large smile on his face and Five happily greets him.
"Anthony Bridgerton, the rascal that finally came out of his hiding of nightly pursuits. It is great to see you again my friend."
"And I, you. I was wondering if we would never catch up again seeing as you stopped coming to the Gentlemen's Club and now I see why."
"Let me introduce-"
"-I am Viscountess (l/n) and this is my younger sister (s/f/n). Pleasure to meet your acquaintance Lord Bridgerton." (y/n) cuts off Five which amused Anthony.
"The pleasure is mine." Anthony surprises the sisters and Five as he holds (y/n)'s hand and kisses the back of it.
"My family are sponsoring Miss (s/n) for this season and are staying with us for the time being."
"I believe the Queen has announced you Diamond of the Season."
"She has Lord Bridgerton." (s/n) replies.
"I am not surprised by how your wonderful sister has brought you up with such perfect mannerisms. She must be proud."
"You're much too kind my Lord." Five narrows his eyes at (y/n), noticing a hint of pink on her cheeks and a fire bubbled in him. "But yes, I am proud of my sister."
"It was fortunate that we meet but we must be going-"
"-let me escort you, Viscountess (y/n), join your promenade if you permit me so."
"I-" (y/n) looks at her little sister who was nodding her head yes and she decides to let the Lord Bridgerton join her. "I wouldn't mind if you joined, yes." the sisters soon walk off ahead, arm in arm as they giggled together but Five grabs Anthony.
"What are you doing?"
"As you asked of me. To keep the oldest away from her sister so you can woo her."
"And all your blatant flattery was not part of the deal."
"Well, you did not tell me the eldest was beautiful. I am shocked that you have not chosen to be her escort and I will not make the same mistake as you." Five seethes as Anthony goes off to converse with (y/n), not liking how he managed to make her smile and laugh so effortlessly. He didn't like this feeling, didn't like it at all and (y/n) knew.
(y/n) could feel the stares of Five while he amused her sister, catching his eyes every now and then while Anthony would try to entertain her with his many skills. She knew that there was something going on between the two men and she would let it play out, enjoying the attention Anthony was showering her with. (y/n) could later humiliate the two for finding out their game later on.
"You truly are amazing Lord Bridgerton." (y/n) feigns sweetness as she 'marvels' over his gunship at a shooting range game, looking over at Five as he challenged Anthony to a game. (y/n) smirks at Five, noticing the snarl on his lips as he tried to focus on shooting down the pins. "You're beating Sir Five." (y/n) muses, doting on Anthony even though she could shoot better than him, silently laughing at Five as he glares at her before shifting his stance and suddenly managing to gun down every pin in seconds. Five smirks noticing the shock on (y/n) as she witnessed his true hidden skill, the best gunman in the ton.
"Ah, seems like I lost again to the best of the best once again." Anthony sighs, chuckling as Five hands (s/n) a gift for his achievements. (y/n) was still in shock from the speed and ferocity of Five's shooting, wondering where he learnt his skill and he enjoyed the bemused look on her face.
"Seems like I have put your tongue in a twist love." Five whispers into (y/n)'s ear as he passes her, revelling in the way her cheeks burn pink and the small almost inaudible gasp that leaves her lips.
