As the second day of Spring rolled around, the streets instantly filled with the clusters of young women and nobles rushing around to purchase the most exquisite gowns and jewellery for the second ball of the Social Season.
There was excitement and buzzing amongst every lady, whispering and gossiping of the different bachelors that have gained their interests. For tonight and after tonight shall the callers come to give their gifts to the women they desire.
You walked around the town, wearing a simple (f/c) gown with your parasol and your face free of your mask. People easily walked passed you, not giving you a second glance as you blended in with the crowd which gave you so much more freedom than when you donned your famous black lace mask.
It was a beautiful spring day for some tea and a stroll with the blue skies clear of any clouds and florists displaying their most beautiful flowers, covering the streets of sweet jasmine and honeysuckle.
You chuckled, seeing the ladies around you frantic and panic for tonight while glaring at some men that eyed you from across the street. You sighed out in bliss, closing your eyes for a brief moment to take in the smell. This brief moment however had caused you to stumble on your feet and bump into someone.
"I am dreadfully sorry! I didn't mean to bump into you!" You quickly apologise, bowing and looking up to have your eyes widen at the man that stood before you.
"It is quite alright." Five Hargreeves pulled out a fake smile and you could see the annoyance in his eyes but you knew that he had to keep up the gentleman act especially in public. Five helped pick up your parasol as you brushed your black-feathered fan against your face, hiding your grin.
Have I seen her before?
Five stops short, glancing up to see this strange woman before him look awfully familiar. Especially the fan. "Your parasol miss." Five could pick up on the hints of whispers around him, women chatting about the scene and exaggerating what they were seeing.
"Thank you so much." You take your parasol, your fan brushing against Five's hand and he shudders against the feeling.
"Wait-" he looks up to see the strange woman disappear from thin air.
Night quickly fell and the dark skies lit up with lights and fireworks as noble families and women travelled to the next ball in boats across a calm river. The entrance was lit up by string lanterns, carriages and horses lined up for those who wish to leave early. Women dressed in more bright and eye-catching gowns, the men wearing their most formidable suits as they milled about underneath trees filled with fairy lights.
The red carpet had lanterns lit with fire down the sides as Five and his family walked down the pathway with people gawking and whispering once again.
"Do they have nothing else to do besides stare at us?" Five mutters out, fixing his cuff with his white-gloved fingertips as his polished black shoes dragged him forward. He sighed out, tugging on his collar beneath his black and blue suit.
"Dear brother, we are the stars of this ball. Why else would they stop and stare?" Klaus, snickered down at his younger brother, his fiance on his arm as he kissed his cheek.
"Now don't go disappearing off like you usually do. Father needs you to find a suitable bride." Allison places her hand on Five's shoulder, her other hand holding onto her husband's arm.
"Dear sister, there is nothing more than I love to occupy my time with is to fraternise with these children and have them giggle all over me." Sarcasm dripped from Five's voice and he immediately walked off to try and hide.
I wonder if Madam (y/n) is going to be here.
Five's mind wanders back to the woman from the night before, her mischievously bright eyes and devilishly smile. He was brought back by the laughter of the women as they danced with their partners on the dance floor, lifted up and spun around before being settled back down on their feet. The orchestra was lively and enthusiastic, synching with the atmosphere despite Five's utter urge to steal a horse and ride off. Five spent the next few hours forced to converse and dance with young ladies despite his disgust.
"May I have the next dance?"
"Actually, I think I should retire-" Five freezes as he turns around, the last lady he danced with completely forgotten as his eyes rested on the woman his mind was wondering about. "Madame (y/n)."
You grinned cheekily, your eyes behind your lace mask illuminated by the lanterns that shone over your red gown that you had decided to wear. Once again, you stood out amongst the rest in your simple yet beautiful dress with your hair free-flowing.
"I see my request has been turned down." Your pink lips turned up at the corner. "How unfortunate-"
"-no! What I mean is that I would love to." Five quickly sputtered out and the ladies behind him all groan and gasp in jealousy as he took your hand. You dragged him out from the dance floor despite Five's confusion and towards the buffet table filled with drinks. "Are we not dancing?"
"Thought you needed a rescue." You picked up a glass of whiskey. "Why, did you actually want to dance?" You glance up at Five, passing him the glass as you drank from another.
"Well-"
"-You looked tired dancing the past few hours. Didn't think you would be up for another." You grinned behind your glass as Five looked at you.
"You've been here since the beginning?" You hum out.
"I'd rather observe than join in the festivities. I enjoy my solitude much more than conversing with a group of people that try to get to your wealth. Don't you think?" Five nodded in agreement, the both of you enjoying the comfortable silence as you drank whiskey. The host suddenly comes out, a staff lit up in flames at the end.
"It is with great privilege that I present the newest spectacle of illumination! Feats your eyes above and allow all that is radiant to overwhelm you!" Five watched you as you stood up at the announcement, staring up when the string lights above you suddenly lit up like large fireflies. He didn't realise the soft smile on his face as he saw how entranced an in awe you were of the lights, the childlike excitement and wonder in your eyes.
"It's beautiful!" His heart leapt as you sighed out, almost reaching up to touch the lights. "As if the stars were so close to our fingertips." applaud erupts from around them but Five couldn't take his eyes away from you as you shone beneath the warm lights like an angel.
"This may be sudden, but I may have a solution that would benefit the both of us." Five blurts out all of a sudden, gaining your attention.
"And what issues would we both be having?"
"A solution that ensures that mothers and daughters steer clear from me, and for the bachelors of this season to not even glance at your way." You raise a brow, your interest piqued.
"What may this solution be?"
"We could pretend to form an attachment with each other." Five mutters out, glancing around to see the eyes of everyone on them as he leaned down towards your ear. "With you on my arm, the world will believe that I've finally found my bride. Every presumptuous mother in town will leave me alone and will be the same for every man in town. They will finally lay their gazes to rest and I am sure that you will never be approached again with a mention of a proposal." Five noticed the excited gleam in your eyes.
"Everyone will presume what we are. You and me, unavailable and unattainable." You gasp out, a sly smile on your face.
"A farce to fool everyone to think we are to be married when we know that we will not."
Fireworks suddenly burst into the sky as you took Five's hand as a sign of agreement. "An absurd plan but one that I would enjoy very much." The music from the orchestra suddenly surrounded you both as you and Five walked together towards the dance floor, gaining every eye and attention possible.
"Look into my eyes." Five took you to the middle as you stood before one another, bowing. "If this is to work, we must appear madly in love." Five whispers out, taking a step closer towards you.
He carefully lays a hand on your waist, the other holding your hand as you rested yours on his shoulder. You both stared into each other's eyes, dancing to the music that was made for you both. All eyes were on you like the most important couple of the century. You danced close to one another, hands brushing against each other as you only focused on each other like you were mesmerised. Five spun you around and dipped you sensually as the fireworks burst behind you both like an age-old fairytale love story come true.
Except this all would be fake.
Or will it be?
