A few years go by as Five and Dolores got much closer, spending their every waking minute together in the apocalyptic world. As a ghost, Five realised that Dolores didn't age when he did, growing so much taller than the small woman that was adorable in his eyes. There were many days that Five teased her about her height knowing she couldn't do anything back except cross her arms and pout. She couldn't even touch him, something Five was devasted about since he couldn't hug her.
Dolores kept Five company through his years, sticking by him during the night as they talked and watched the fireflies or when he had to go out to the city during the day. Dolores wasn't visible during the day, stuck being transparent but she still stayed with Five and he knew she was there with him. He could sense her presence, protecting him and helping to carry stuff. It was one of his favourite moments, watching the objects Dolores was carrying look like they were floating in the sky.
Five sometimes think how he would have never made it this far alone if it weren't for Dolores. She always ends up bringing so many useful things that she finds while Five was asleep. Heavy winter coast when the season were changing, hiking boots for arduous journeys and she also built him a makeshift home at the cluster of trees they lived in. She even built him a bed!
Five swore that Dolores saved his life, being so appreciative towards her. He also slowly fell in love with Dolores, realising his feelings for her on the night of his 26th birthday. Dolores had given him a handmade gift of a painted portrait of his family.
After so many years, Five had burst out into tears when he saw the gift. He saw himself in the portrait with his family all hugging him, the details all a close resemblance to how they would look in their 30s.
"I tried to imagine what they might have looked like and with you in it too. I hope you like it. I'm sorry if I got anything wrong." Five quickly shook his head as he held the painting in his shaky hands.
"It's perfect." Five quickly wiped his tears away, glad for the nights he and Dolores spent talking about his life and his family. "Thank you so much Dolores." Without a second thought, Five jumped on Dolores and realised that he was hugging her. "Wait, how am I hugging you!?" He leans back in shock and Dolores looks at him with wide eyes.
"I, I don't know!" Dolores mutters out in shock, tracing her hand against Five's cheek and he grabs it, leaning against her palm. She cried softly, feeling another person after so many years.
Five decided that he wanted to confess, he didn't want to miss his chance.
He needed to tell her what was in his heart before it was too late.
He kissed Dolores' hand, placing a hand on her cheek and leaning his forehead on hers.
"Dolores, I need to tell you something." Five shudders out, his feelings overflowing for the woman before him.
The woman that supported him, that kept him sane, that kept him to continue living and not give up.
The woman that stayed by his side through thick and thin.
The woman that helped him stay human.
"I love you Dolores. I love you so much." Five stutters out, his heart racing in his chest as the words spilled out in the open night air. He leans back to see Dolores looking at him with wide eyes, them flashing with pure joy as she smiled with tears escaping down her cheeks.
"Five, do you really mean that?" He nods and Five swore that he meant it with his whole life. He would bet on his life to prove that his feelings for Dolores were real and true.
That he truly loved her.
Dolores quickly jumps on him, hugging him tightly as she cried out. "I love you too Five! For the first time ever, I felt love for someone ever since I woke up. You, and it will always be you." She leans back and Five stared at Dolores as she shone with the same amount of love for him as he did for her.
In all his years, Five never felt more complete, happier than he was now.
He had his life in his arms and he wouldn't trade it for anything.
Five quickly kissed Dolores with all his emotions bursting for the woman in his arms as she kissed him back deeply. They expressed their love for one another more intimately that night as the full moon shone above them with the fireflies glowing like golden gems.
Five slowly wakes up to see that he had fallen asleep while working on equations, the night sky littered with millions of stars replacing the day sky. He saw a foxtrot sleeping above his head on his bed, a white bunny laying by his feet as the disco ball above his head spun on a thread. It illuminated his room like the moon as the woman he loved slept next to him peacefully, huddled in a small ball.
Five smiles warmly at the flower ring that rested on her ring finger, the same one on his as he played with it, twirling it around. He yawns and starts working on the equations again, glancing at the girl that had woken up.
"Morning princess." Five grins as Dolores rubbed her eyes cutely.
"Morning love. Working again?" Five nods, his heart blooming with love and adoration.
Many years had gone by and Five was sporting much more grey hair than usual as he sat next to Dolores who read over his equations.
Five stared at the answer of the long equation that was written out in chalk against a blackboard that Dolores had found for him. "I think this is it Dolores. I think I found the right equation!" Five jumps up on his feet but Dolores shakes her head.
"I don't know love, it doesn't look right to me." Five frowns, looking over the numbers and letters.
"What could be wrong?"
"The result number seems too large. I'm not sure." she stands up inspecting the equation but Five gets distracted at the love of his life who hasn't aged a day unlike him. She wore a soft off-shoulder gown made from flowers and different materials, her hair tied up with different types of roses and lilies pinned in her hair.
"Well, we won't know if we don't try."
"It could be dangerous."
"I know, but I have to get back to my family. I need to save them. I can't stay here another couple of years-" Five quickly shuts up, realising what he said. "I didn't mean it like that Dolores-"
"-it's ok Five, I get it." She smiles at him but he could sense the sadness in her smile. "You need to save everyone and to stop this from happening." Five sighs out and nods, fisting his hands and concentrating to open a portal. He hasn't been able to do this in years but with Dolores who was supporting him, he finally opened one.
He looked at it in shock, seeing a familiar set of faces on the other side. "I did it. Holy shit I did it!"
"Five! It's getting smaller!" Dolores panics and Five realises that the portal in deed was shrinking.
"Come with me!" Five begs Dolores but she shakes her head.
"You know I can't Five. I don't have a physical form-"
"-Dolores, I'm begging you! I can't live without you, please!" Five cries out. "I can't lose you. Not you, anyone but you please." Dolores cried softly, placing her hand on Five's cheek even though he couldn't feel it.
"I'm sorry Five. My story ends here."
"Don't say that. Don't say goodbye! Please, just come with me. We can try, you can try to come with me." Five begs and Dolores looks up at the night sky as the full moon finally came out from behind the clouds. It shone over her, her body shimmering and slowly coming more solid than transparent.
"I love you Five. You will forever be the only one I love. I hope you know that."
"Dolores..." she grabbed Five's face, kissing him deeply when she could finally touch him. She kissed him as if it would be her last, pouring her life and her love.
Five held the only woman who could hold his heart in her hands, holding her close and kissing her with everything he had. With every memory, with every emotion, with every laughter, sadness, anger and all his love. "I love you, Dolores. I love you so much." Five whimpered as she slowly took her ring off and placed it in his palm, closing his fingers around it softly.
"You are my life Five." Dolores softly cried, her tears turning gold. "You gave me a reason to stay, but now it's time for me to go home, just like you have to go home." Five burst into tears, seeing the love of his life slowly turn into fireflies.
"Please don't go, Dolores! Don't leave me!" She held Five's cheek in her palm as Five held her hand tightly, not wanting to let her go.
"I love you Five." her soft voice rang in the air one last time, the fireflies circling him before flying away to leave him alone in despair and alone once again. He looked down at Dolores' ring, slipping it on and going through the portal.

Five sighs as he sat on the front steps of his old house, watching people walk past by him and vehicles zooming by on the road. It oddly felt weird to him, to hear a cacophony of sounds surrounding him when he was used to hearing Dolores almost all of his life.
Used to the sounds of her voice and her giggles as he chased her around the fields.
Used to the buzzing fireflies that he listened to with her every night as they danced across the night sky.
Used to the tiny honks of the white bunny and yips of the foxtrot that she kept as pets, or as their children that she used to say.
Five hated it, all this noise. He just wanted to hear Dolores again, just one last time.
Five sighs out and stands up, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he decided to go for a walk to clear his head. He walked down the pathway silently, dodging people that walked by him. It almost felt surreal, seeing so many people alive when it was going to turn into a dark and desolate area in a few days.
Five was about to cross the road when he suddenly hears a truck honking loudly. He notices a figure on the road and realised that it was a girl running after a small animal, the truck not slowing down.
"For fucks sake!" Five grunts and quickly teleports to the girl, grabbing her and teleporting her to safety on the pathway. "What the fuck do you think you're doing!? You could've gotten killed you-" Five's words get caught in his throat as he saw the familiar flower ring not on his finger, but on the girl's finger that he saved. She held a white bunny in her arms as she looked at the road and back at him with wide eyes.
"I'm so sorry! This little asshole decided to escape my house and run across the road!" Five almost got whiplash, hearing the unfamiliar vulgar words spill from the familiar pink lips he used to kiss every morning he could when he woke up in the apocalypse. "I should've watched where I was going." The girl sighs out, brushing the dirt off her clothes with one hand. Five blinks in confusion as to why she was wearing jeans and a shirt, and not her usual floral dress she used to make by hand. "Thanks for saving me. I'm really sorry if I caused you any trouble."
She looked different yet somehow looked the same. Her smile and her eyes held the same familiar happiness and life that Five fell in love with.
"Dolores?" he whispers out but the girl in front of him looks at him in confusion.
"Uh no, my name is (y/n). What's your name?" Five quickly snaps out of his daydream and clears his throat.
"It's, uh, Five."
She tilts her head in confusion. "Like the number?" Five nods and she beams.
"It oddly suits you. I love it." Five couldn't help but see his love flash before his eyes, hearing her voice say the same words when they first met in his head. His heart raced as he tried to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. "Well Five, let me treat you to lunch. My way of saying thanks for saving my ass." Five stutters as (y/n) grins, her face beaming with joy just like Dolores.
"Uh, no, it's fine-"
"-nonsense! I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you!" (y/n) grabs Five's hand and drags him with her to a diner that was close by. Five stares down at the flower ring on (y/n)'s hand as they both sat in a booth together across from one another.
"Where did you get that?" (y/n) blinks then looks down at her hand with the ring as it rested on the table.
"Oh! I don't know. I found it on my hand when I woke up one day. I had an oddly weird dream that night, something about a boy. But I never took it off. There was something in me that didn't want to. So I kept it on." Five glances down at his ring, seeing both rings resting on his fingers. "Holy shit! You got the same one as mine! What a coincidence!"
The girl points at the rings and Five smiles softly, running his finger over the ring that belonged to the love of his life. "A coincidence indeed."
