Five sighed as he sat on the rooftop of the Umbrella Academy, his home, watching people below on the streets mingle and walk idly by. This had become the norm of his routine, having nothing else to do but to 'grow up' as Hazel had once said. Quite unfortunate that he had to pass away, though.
Five sat cross-legged on top of a table that was pushed against the ledge, his head in his palm with his elbow resting on his knee as a book lay in his lap. He shuddered against the cold chill as the sun started to set and spatial jumped away from the rooftop to drop onto a couch, scaring his siblings who were in the living room. They all welcomed his appearance, going back to watching whatever film they were watching while Five went back to reading. The usual quiet air beside the draining white noise of the movie was suddenly disrupted by a symphony of harmony and singing.
Five winces as the song was strangely pounding in his head. "Who's playing music this loud?" he looked around, trying to find the culprit but gave up and listened to the song. It was sad and beautiful. Soulful yet full of melancholy. The male siblings looked at him weirdly while Vanya and Allison looked proud? "What?"
"You're hearing a song right now?" Vanya asks and Five nods slowly. "Five! You're hearing your soulmate!"
"My what?" the sisters gasp in shock.
"The person you're destined to be with!" Klaus suddenly pipes in. "You hear whatever song they are playing sometimes and feel their main emotions like happiness or sadness!"
"But it's weird that you're hearing your soulmate now. People normally get it as soon as they turn 10 or something." Allison adds in and Five just looks at the three excited siblings in confusion.
"Well, I only hear them playing a song-" Five gasps painfully, doubling over as a sudden wave of sadness washes over him. Five whimpers softly, sudden tears streaming down his face.
"Five?" the Hargreeve siblings look at the physically younger one with concern that the Five Hargreeve was crying.
Having a soulmate was surprising but not shocking to Five at all. This wasn't his first time hearing or feeling his soulmate. He had felt them before he got stuck in the apocalypse. Granted, Five was always a calm child growing up. More mature and always keeps his other siblings in line and never raises his voice. But that all started to change when he turned 13 and started feeling bursts of anger and he knew that wasn't from him.
The anger he felt from his soulmate was like a bomb and adding his own rage was nuclear, resulting in most of the murder sprees that Five mercilessly committed. He wouldn't necessarily murder without assessing the consequences but he couldn't help himself whenever his soulmate saw red. Thankfully, that all stopped as soon as he came back home from 1963 with his family but he ended up not feeling anything anymore after that.
For 5 years, all he felt was an abyss-like emptiness and the feeling of his soulmate disappeared until it came back full force.
It was quite late in the day as Five was making another cup of coffee in the kitchen. It was a rare sight, seeing Five clad in pj pants and a simple shirt. As Five poured the coffee, he jumped slightly, hearing someone laughing softly. There was a sudden warmth in his chest and he stopped to listen.
"Why are you smiling like you've killed someone?" Diego asks and Five looks at him.
"I'm smiling?"
"Yes. And like a creepy stalker at that. Is it your soulmate?" Five nods.
"It's the first time that they're happy." Five sits down at the dining table, smiling softly as he hears their soft giggles.
"How cute, the dangerous Five Hargreeve is all soft for his soulmate."
"I'll still cut your tongue off and feed it to you, Diego. Don't test me." Five smiles creepily at his brother, making him quickly leave the kitchen as Five just listened to his soulmate laughing. "I wonder what she's doing today. Maybe she's with some friends." Throughout the whole day, Five could feel his soulmate being so happy and he couldn't help but grin the entire time. "She's singing!" Five exclaims suddenly, scaring the random passerby and Luther, who tagged along with him since he had nothing to do.
"Who?" Luther asks and Five deadpans.
"My soulmate you moron. She's singing! She must be so happy!" Five chuckles, hearing you sing softly but then belting out the words you knew. "Not bad. Not good either."
"You can't sing to save your life either." Luther chuckles and Five glares at him.
"Oh, she's trying to rap and failing miserably." Five chuckles, hearing his soulmate just mumble the song. "It's cute." Luther watches in surprise as Five starts humming, a sudden skip in his step as they head over to Griddy's.
Five was cleaning up his bedroom late in the night, filled with the urge to move around and do something, as he was surrounded by pop songs that pumped him up. He couldn't understand the language but he figured it was something along the lines of loving yourself and he was glad that his soulmate was feeling self-loved since he wasn't there in person. The song was playing on repeat and he didn't mind, bopping around and moving things around his bedroom.
"What the fuck am I watching?" Five jumps as he sees his sisters and Klaus standing by the doorway.
"Were you... were you dancing?" Allison snickers behind her hand.
"I'm not!"
"You sure were!" Klaus bursts out laughing as Five flushed red.
"Your soulmate sure is something to get you to dance." Vanya giggles and Five quickly teleports to his door to slam the door closed in their faces. He huffs out in embarrassment but that quickly dies off as he yawns.
"I need to sleep." Five sighs out, getting into bed but lays there wide awake. "She's not going to sleep is she?" Five stayed awake almost all night listening to a song on repeat in his head. He was not to be messed with in the morning. He was dangerously tired and quiet during the day but as the night rolled around, he was extremely worried.
"What's going on with your soulmate?" Ben asked, putting away a book he was reading.
"She's listening to a sad song on repeat." Five frowns, hearing the soft sniffles.
"Is she crying?" Ben asks and Five's heart breaks at how sad his soulmate sounded and teleported to his room, shutting himself off from the others. He lays in bed, hearing his soulmate cry for hours long into the night.
"I hope you can hear me somehow, but I'm here for you." Five's resolve slowly dissolves, hastily wiping his tears away at how useless he feels as he hears the loud and depressing song playing over and over. "Please, please stop crying..."
Five sighs, downing the piping hot cup of coffee in one go and chucking the empty cup away. His mind was completely empty as he walked down the bustling streets filled with people either chatting or desperately trying to get to their destination. Ever since his soulmate had finally fallen asleep, all he heard was silence. Absolute deafening silence and he hoped that his soulmate didn't disappear again like before. He didn't want her to disappear when he knew she was hurting so much.
Five walked towards a park and headed towards the tallest hill with a single willow tree on it. It was the only tree that no one seemed to visit, so he could spend time to just think and find ways to find his soulmate. As he got closer, a familiar song started playing in his head.
"It's the same song from last night." Five sighs out sadly, getting closer to the tree while the song suddenly got louder the closer he got. "Why is it getting so loud?" Five winces as he stood right in front of the long draping leaves of the willow tree, seeing someone else sitting against the trunk with their head resting back. They were mouthing the words to whatever song they were hearing through their headphones, not noticing Five's existence as their eyes were closed.
I wanna hold you when I'm not supposed to. When I'm lying close to someone else.
Five gasps, hearing the same lyrics he had managed to memorise fall from the person's lips. They opened their eyes to see Five standing in front of them as he sang the next few lyrics.
"You're stuck in my head and I can't get you out of it. If I could do it all again."
