💫 Boggart (Harry Potter AU) (Part 1) 💫

The ending of this story might seem disconnected as I was in a bit of a dark phase writing this but never finished the ending until now. I'm not feeling like that anymore now so maybe the ending might be a bit of a weird read.

I am not following the legitimate timeline of Harry Potter at all from neither the movies nor the books. All made up here ok.

Please don't crucify me if there are mistakes as I have never read the books, only watched the movies and even then, its been years since I last saw the movies.

It was another new year, another new year to attend Hogwarts as the 5th-year students all piled up on the train back to the schools. It was a beautiful day, the sky a clear blue as the 17-year-old students sat with their friends in different carriages, most hanging with their classmates from their own house colour.

Five huffed out from the narrow space of the hallways, eager to just sit down in a carriage and get this ride over and done with. He shoved his hands in the pockets of his navy suit, mindlessly ignoring Draco who was going off about this Potter again. Not that he really cared but he couldn't escape it since they both were in Slytherin and were in the same group of friends.

"How long is this going to take?" Five sneered lowly, looking over the many heads to see that there was a line. "Let's just take this one." The Slytherin group nods and sits down on the empty carriage next to them, Five sitting by the door as he took out a book to read.

"You're always having that head of yours stuck in your books Five." Blaise and Theo snickers as Pansy was annoying Draco with her failed attempts to woo him.

"Yeah, I bet there's nothing that can actually take your attention away from your precious books." Marcus muses and Five simply ignores them just like Crabbe and Goyle who were too busy eating. The traffic in the hallways soon calms down and when it does, Five hears a familiar group of people walk into the train. He lifts his head, glad that the people in his carriage paid him no attention as he sees a certain group of girls, specifically the last one trailing behind them with her headphones in.

(y/n).

She was once again using that muggle contraption where she could hear music, using a small cellular device to read whatever she was reading. Five watch her walk past him with her group of friends, leaning his head over the door to see her talk to her friends and nodding to whatever they were saying. They went into the carriage just one ahead on the opposite side of the Slytherins carriage.

"Move." Five looks at Goyle who was sitting next to Draco in front of him. He shrugs and moves, Five taking his place so now he could see (y/n) from the open carriage window. She still had her headphones in, her hood over her head as she leans her head against the window of the train that was now moving. She looked exhausted, probably giving that same excuse to her friends who asked her if she was ok. Five watched as she waved her hand, her friends talking to each other and she sighs. Five and (y/n) briefly caught each other's gaze and (y/n) quickly looks away, closing her eyes to probably sleep.

Marcus was wrong. There was something, someone, that could break Five's attention away from his book and that was the most ordinary and average girl he knew in Hogwarts.

(y/n).

The girl was like an extra when it came to the world, more invisible than the background extras that revolved around the world of Harry Potter and his gang of mystery solvers. She minded her own business and stayed in her own world, not bothering anyone. She was nothing special, not extraordinary and at first, Five never would've guessed she existed.

Until he heard her swearing at Goyle and Crabbe in their first year during meals. The duo were throwing food around in the Great Hall and she had snapped after trying to keep her patience.

"What the fuck is wrong with the two of yous!? You both act like you were raised on a fucking farm with the animals! Do you not know how to act like decent human beings or are your heads too empty of a working brain to even do just that!?"

Five was the only one that burst out laughing from the spew of insults while everyone else was shocked from the amount of swears that came out from this first-year student. Since then, Five was interested in the girl, observing her since that first night in the first year at Hogwarts.

It was easy to observe (y/n) since she was in every class of his, sitting somewhat in the middle of the room with one of her friends that were in the class with her so she could read the board. (y/n) was in a group with 7 friends including her, all of them split across the 4 houses but they all were extremely close friends which surprised a lot of people. The houses were normally pitted against each other but this wasn't the case. They acted almost like sisters which Five connected with, being very close with his own family despite their differences.

(y/n) was a quiet girl, never speaking up in class and if she did, only every now and then to ask her friend what they had to do if she wasn't paying attention. (y/n) never attracted any attention from the other students and was very patient or either she just didn't give a shit about anything around her. It was next to impossible to piss the girl off and when she was angry, it was almost terrifying. No one hated her but she wasn't popular either, just a ghost that wisped past people in the hallways. Even Dracos gang didn't know she existed, always too busy bullying some other poor student.

She was an average student, trying her best but not being able to exceed to the top like him, Hermione or Draco. She was just a normal student who shouldn't be interesting to anyone but to Five, she was a complete mystery.

She was always covered up in her coat, her hood always up with the excuse that she is cold. This was true in fact as during the colder seasons, she was layered up to stay warm which amused Five every now and then when she walked into the class dressed as a polar bear. She didn't care about what others thought of her, saying that she 'doesn't give a shit' or that what people did now would be irrelevant when they actually went out into the real world after graduating, which Five completely agrees to.

(y/n) was always listening to music using her muggle contraptions, at every possible minute of the day like she loathed silence. She even uses her cellular phone to record the classes for later on if she missed any important details while taking notes, which Five deemed quite smart. She wasn't a regular witch, always using those muggle tools like a laptop to do her assignments or to talk to someone from far away. Five remembers catching her outside in a hidden part of the courtyard to talk to a younger girl on her screen or catching her wide awake outside on the schoolyard stairs on extremely late nights.

Five was always up late and so apparently was (y/n), seeing her either sitting on the steps to watch the night sky or on an open balcony and without her headphones. These were the moments that surprised Five, seeing such a sad look on her face and he realised something. During the 4 years he's been here in Hogwarts, he's never seen (y/n) smile or look happy.

Sure, she was smiling during the Yule Ball last year when her group of friends went together as each other's date, which was smart again, but there was a sense of forlorn sadness behind her smile. Even though she danced and laughed with her friends, there was a sense of distance between her and them. Five had noticed her taking out hidden alcohol from behind the punch table, drinking her sorrows away as if she tried to chase the sadness away. She drank and drank during the ball but she acted as if she wasn't affected which made him concerned about how long the girl had been drinking for.

"Oi Hargreeves, what are you looking at?" Draco pulls him out of his reverie, Five quickly moving his gaze away from (y/n). He didn't want the group to bother her.

"It's nothing..."

"What class do you have first?" every student was asking each other during breakfast to see which friends could be together for which class. Everyone was given the day before to settle into their dorms, to remember the hallways and memorise which ones to take for their future classes.

Five was ignoring the Slytherin group once more as he laid his chin on top of his hand, the gang talking to each other as he looked over at (y/n) talking to her friends. Her hair was tied up this year with her curtain fringe framing her face, Five noticing that it was a new haircut. She never had a fringe before, her hair cut much shorter than before. Her cloak was folded over her lap as the weather started becoming very warm, a surprising notion that (y/n) was normally always cold. She pushed her glasses up her face, showing her timetable to her friends and hi-fiving at whoever was going to be in her classes.

She hadn't touched her food, not even taking a single bite and only drinking her tea with some strange tablets. This concerned Five, his eyes narrowed on her as she yawned. He wondered if she slept properly, which wouldn't surprise him if she didn't since her schedule was as horrendous as his. The bells rang and the students all stood up to head off to their first class of the year.

"I'll see you guys later ok." (y/n) says, waving goodbye as she heads off in the opposite direction from her friends and Five figured her first class was with him once again. He followed her from a distance as she put her headphones in again, walking against the walls to reach the class first. There was a couple of students already waiting around for the teacher for Divination, talking to each other.

"Oi Hargreeves!" Five sighs as Draco calls him over to the group, heading over to talk to them while keeping an eye on (y/n) who already chose her seat. Professor Trelawney soon walks in everyone rushes to sit with their friend, the Slytherin group hanging in the back but Five decided to take the seat next to (y/n)'s when no one moved to take it. She didn't pay him any attention as he sat down, taking out his books like she already did which were spread open on her desk. "Psst!" Five turns around to see Draco sitting behind him with Blaise. "Why are you sitting there and not with us?"

"You guys talk too much during class." Five quips back and Draco rolls his eyes before sitting back in his seat, Five moving to look at (y/n). "Hey." she looks up at him with surprise, pointing at herself and he nods.

"Uh hey." she mumbles out very quietly which wasn't uncommon during class except when she was very loud during her breaks when she hung out with her friends.

"The names Five."

"I know, we almost have all our classes together." Five was surprised that (y/n) even knew that or even paid attention to that certain detail. "I'm (y/n)... I guess we're partners for the rest of the year if that's ok with you."

"Yeah, I'm fine with that." Five nods and he and (y/n) both turn back to pay attention to the class. He could already tell (y/n) didn't like the class except for the free tea she took advantage of, chuckling softly. "I'm guessing you like tea."

"Ah, you could tell huh." (y/n) nervously rubs her neck. "I think I'm the only one that likes it here. Look at all their faces." Five looks around and snorts lightly at the disgust on the faces of the students around him.

"Truth be told, it wasn't that bad but I prefer that muggle drink they call coffee."

"I didn't peg you to be a coffee drinker." Five realised that the way (y/n) spoke was different from the others here, wondering if she moved from overseas to attend Hogwarts.

"Gives me the caffeine boost I need to tolerate most of these mouthbreathers." Five notices (y/n) scoff softly and he grins.

"To be honest, coffee makes me sleepy."

"Really?" she nods and both Five and (y/n) go back to actually paying attention to the teacher.
