Surprises
Not related to the cross over
Stella sat in her hospital room, staring out the window. It had been a couple weeks since Will had left and she recovered from her surgery. So far, the lungs were doing great but she was supposed to stay in the hospital for a month for observation.
She sighed, wishing Will didn't leave. That one week when he was there was the best few days of her life. Besides being with Poe, she had never been happier.
But now, he was gone. And the worst part? She didn't even know where. She couldn't bring herself to ask Barb or Julie, afraid of being rejected.
She really did love him, and she knew it was mutual. It was like a stab to her heart every time Stella walked passed his old hospital room.
Her eyes drifted to her wall where all her sister's artwork was displayed. But it wasn't just hers anymore. All the realistic and cartoon drawings Will have her hung beside her sisters.
A small smile graced her lips.
The door creeped open, snapping Stella out of her train of thought. Barb stepped in, holding a trey of food. "I brought you some lunch, Stella."
Stella stood from her chair and grabbed the trey gratefully. "Thank you, Barb."
"Anytime." She was about to walk out but hesitated and turned back around. "Actually, after you're done eating, there's a surprise waiting for you in the lobby."
"Um, okay," Stella replied before sitting down and eating her breakfast.
What kind of surprise could you give a girl who had lived in a hospital half of her life? Maybe her mom or dad came today see her since Christmas was in a couple days.
After her trey was empty, she found herself walking down the halls, waving to nurses and doctors as she passed.
Someone fell into step beside her. "Anxious to see your surprise?" Julie's voice rang through her ears.
"Aren't you supposed to be home with the baby?" Stella asked, her eyebrows raising.
Julie chuckled. "I brought her. She's with the surprise."
"So it is a person?" Stella asked, pushing the doors to the lobby open.
"See for yourself." Julie pushes her through the doors and turned her around.
Stella froze, her eyes watering. "Will?"
He looked up from the baby that was laying in his arms and gave her a lopsided smile. "Hey, Stella."
"W-What are you doing here?" She probably looked like an idiot with her wide eyes and slightly parted mouth. "I thought- thought-"
"I did," Will informed her and handed the baby back to Julie. He grabbed the pool stick (or whatever it's called) and thrust the other end toward her. "I'm visiting."
Stella grabbed the other end, five feet apart. "How- why?" She wanted so badly to just hug him but she knew she couldn't.
"Because I missed you." Will smiled again, brighter. "And I thought it would be a pretty good Christmas present."
"Topped them all," Stella joked, reaching a hand up to wipe the tears from her eyes. "I missed you too."
Will nodded. "So, how have you been?"
"Lonely," She answered. Without Poe and Will around, there was no one to talk to.
"Oh." Will purses his lips. "I wish it could be longer but I leave in a couple hours. How about we don't waste our time moping around?"
"That sounds like a good idea," Stella said.
Julie laughed. "There's a couple more babies in the NICU if you want to go check that out. Be quiet and sanitize."
They nodded before heading in that direction.
Will pushed open the doors and they were met with a large window, looking into the NICU.
"Remember this place?" He asked.
Stella nodded. "Of course. It's where we first talked. I'm sorry, I wasn't the nicest."
"Don't be." Will smiled and peered through the window at a baby who was hooked to a ventilator. "Poor babies."
"So how have you been?" Stella asked, tearing her eyes away from the babies to look at him.
He met her eyes causing her heart to flutter. "Not too bad. I was transferred to another hospital, I don't know the name. It's lonely and only one other patient with Cystic Fibrosis."
"What's their name?" Stella asked.
"Haley," Will answered.
Oh, it was a girl. "Is she nice?" Stella ignored the weird feeling in her stomach. Jealousy?
"Yeah, she's nice. I don't really talk to her though. Apparently she finds me attractive." Will snorted and rolled his eyes.
"Oh." Stella but her bottom lip and looked away.
Will noticed. "But-" he nudged her with the cue stick. "-she's got nothing on you. I've told you before and I'll tell you again, you're beautiful Stella."
"I love you!" She blurted, her eyes filling with tears again.
"I love you too, more than you could ever know," Will said. "You know, I heard in some cases long distance relationships work out."
Stella's heart beat quickening. "Yeah?"
"Mhm," He hummed. "And I've been thinking, if we keep this face timing thing up and keep in touch, we could make it work."
"Oh really?" Stella raised an eyebrow.
Will nodded. "So, Stella, will you be my girlfriend? We may have been already dating, I'm not really sure but let's just make it official."
Stella laughed. "Yeah, I'll be your girlfriend."
"Great!" Will exclaimed. "Now, I leave in an hour. What do you want to do?"
"We can go find Barb? Have you seen her yet?" Stella asked as they walked down the hallway.
He shook his head. "I just talked to her over the phone."
"Okay, lets go." She tugged on the cue stick and they walked down the hallway, talking about random stuff.
"Oh there he is!" Barb exclaimed as they ran into her in the hospital. "How are you doing, Will?"
Will bit his lip to keep from smiling. "My medication is working."
Barb laughed. "That's great!"
"I didn't know that!" Stella exclaimed. "Will, that's amazing!"'
"I know." He nudged her with the cue stick for the second time.
Barb looked at her watch and gave them a sympathetic look. "Will, your mother will be here soon. You guys should go back to the lobby."
Will furrowed his eyebrows. "She said a couple hours. It's only been one."
"She changed her mind. I'm sorry, baby." Barb smiled sadly. "Y'all can FaceTime all you want though."
"Of course she did," will muttered. "Okay, lets go. It was good to see you, Barb."
"You too, honey." Then she continued her trip down the hallway.
By the time Will and Stella got to the lobby, his mom was pulled up to the front.
He sighed. "I'll visit again soon."
Stella nodded. "I don't want you to go."
"It's whats for the best. I can't risk getting you sick with your new lungs and everything," Will said.
Stella bit her lip. "Screw it." Then she hugged him. She knew it was a dangerous move, that she might get sick. But at this point, she didn't care.
Shocked, Will hesitated before hugging her back. A couple seconds later he pulled away and smiled. "Now, when I walk out that door, you better go shower. Douse yourself in hand sanitizer if you have to."
Stella laughed. "Okay, Will."
"I'll send you more drawings," He told her.
"You better," She teased.
"I love you, Stella," Will said.
"I love you too." Stella grinned. "Bye. I'll see you soon."
He saluted her before leaving, hopping into his mom's car, and waved to her before she drove off.
Stella sighed and headed back to her room.
That was quite a surprise.
