Chapter Seventeen
Remus led Jenna and Marlene to the hospital wing, Jenna was curiously looking at Remus as if he knew something she didn't.
"Remus, what is it?" Marlene kept repeating, but he wouldn't answer. His face was still pale. He pushed open the large oak doors, to reveal Lily lying completely still, as if she was frozen. Her eyes were closed, and she was covered in bandages.
"Lily!" The girls both exclaimed and ran to her aid. But she was fast asleep: a bottle of Skele-Gro rested on her bedside cabinet. Madam Pomfrey rushed out of her office, seeing that Lily had visitors.
"Madam Pomfrey! Is Lily okay?" Marlene asked, shaking with fear.
"She'll be fine dears," Jenna and Marlene grinned at each other, "but she will be in here for, perhaps a month."
"A MONTH?!" Jenna gaped, her eyes wide with shock.
"Madam Pomfrey? May I have a moment, alone?" Professor Dumbledore stood at the door.
"Yes, yes." She huffed, storming off to her office.
"Professor Dumbledore- our classes, we were just wandering around, he dismissed us-" he gave them a skeptical yet amusing look.
"I asked Remus to go and fetch you from Charms. He reported back to me that you were in the common room," he raised a brow. "More to the point, you see your dear friend," he gestured to Lily, "has been severely attacked."
"By what, Professor?" Marlene asked, staring at Lily's limp body.
"We have no clue, but we can only guess. Lord Voldemort."
"V-Voldemort?" The girls gasped, glancing at each other sideways.
The elongated day seemed to last forever, Jenna calculated that it would be a long time before she or Marlene were over this. After all, Lily Evans was one of their closest friends, and to see her in that demeanor...
Sirius and Remus had tried to soothe them into a relaxed tone, but no attempts were actually working. It seemed to be very boring in the common room for the rest of the week: Marlene and Jenna had spent their free time studying in the Library. Of course, the news that Lily Evans was attacked by Lord Voldemort had travelled far beyond the school, The Daily Prophet, The Ministry.
"God, this is so boring!" Marlene snapped, hitting her book closed.
Jenna glanced over in the middle of a nasty-looking essay. "Go play with Abigail or whatever," she grunted, putting her nose back down to her parchment. Marlene sighed and continued to scribble down some words.
"Wait, wait. Paws for a minute." Marlene promptly warranted a smack on her arm. The girls both fell into heaps of giggles.
"Marlene?" Jenna sighed, closing her book shut and standing up to return to the dormitories.
"Yeah?"
"Maybe we should listen to Remus and Sirius, they're right. We shouldn't let this bother us-"
"But she's our friend!" Marlene screeched, receiving a few dirty looks from some girls nearby who had their heads together.
"Psh. I know that, but it doesn't mean it should ruin us having actual fun. SLUMBER PARTYYY!!!" Jenna shrieked, waving her arms and running out screaming.
"Who wants to play a classic Truth or Dare?" Alice giggled, holding up a torch to her face so it would light up in the pitch black. Abigail's constant, loud snoring suddenly ceased. Squeals of delight sounded from all around. "Okay! Lights on!" Brilliant light filled the room as the girls pushed themselves off their beds and onto the floor, clutching pillows to their stomachs.
"So, who first?" Marlene grinned, rubbing her hands together.
"Marlene! Why do you have pasta?"
"I get hungry. During the night." Jenna rolled her eyes and turned back to the group.
"I'll go first." Abigail looked at her feet, grinning.
"Okay. Truth or Dare?"
"Dare."
"Okay. I dare you to kiss Snape."
"Sure." She shrugged, standing up. Jenna gasped and tried to hold in her excitement.
Abigail returned to the room twenty minutes later, panting and blushing fiercely. Her lips were chapped.
"Why are we even playing this game? We're eleven!" Jenna growled.
"Because we don't have a life."
"Excuse me!" Marlene crossed her arms.
"I was joking! It's fun, Jenna." Alice grinned, handing over the money to Abby.
"You pay them if they do it?!"
"Yeah. Pretty much." Marlene and Jenna then fought for the next turn. "Calm down! I only have five quid left."
"Muggle money!" Jenna grinned, her eyes glazed as she moved over to look at it. She was distracted by a sudden movement outside. She looked out of the window and into the Black Lake: Sirius was drowning. Jenna gasped and forgot to tell the others as she rushed out.
Down the stairs she went, as quickly and carefully as she could. She had had swimming lessons, so she had a feeling she could save him. A bitter feeling of regret for not telling the others hung at the back of her mind for the moment: saving Sirius was the main priority.
"Sirius!" Jenna yelled, leaped into the water and kicking towards him. He was floating downwards, she took a deep breath and swam down and snatched his robe. A little face suddenly formed by some seaweed. Curious as she was, Jenna realised she had to get Sirius to shore first.
She paddled to the shore and hoisted him onto the dry grass. He was barefoot, but still wearing his robes which were now soaking.
"You could've died!" Jenna screeched when he gave forth a cough of water. She was included in a hug before she could do anything.
"J-Jenna. Thank y-you, so m-much..." he sobbed into her shoulder, his teeth chattering from the cold. She took off her robes and threw them to him to keep warm them dived in to find whatever was hiding in there. "Where did y-you go?!" Sirius shrieked.
Jenna made her way down to the area where she had seen the minute face peering up at her. She swam up to the surface for a gulp of air, then leapt back down again. Suddenly, her leg had caught in some seaweed. A human with a fish tail was gliding over to her, holding what looked like a chainsaw.
She gasped and tugged at her leg as hard as she could, but it wouldn't budge. The mermaid was raising her saw- Jenna closed her eyes- she swung it.
Jenna's leg suddenly freed itself from the weed. She glanced up and saw the mermaid smiling at her: she had done her a favour. Jenna beamed back, she had obviously cut the seaweed, not her leg. She gave a brisk salute then returned to the surface.
It was some time before Jenna and Sirius returned to the common room. Sirius was stumbling beside her, gripping onto her left shoulder as much as he could.
"Jenna! Sirius!" Marlene hugged them both, thoroughly glad that they had returned. Sirius' teeth chattering shattered the happiness.
"Sirius? What happened? And Jenna, your hair is wet! Both of you!" The duo glanced at each other with a grin. Professor McGonagall suddenly burst through the doors, her face pale and tired.
"Explain yourselves! Both of you!" She snapped, taking a seat at her desk. Professor McGonagall had kindly allowed them some sleep before serving detention at six in the morning.
"Well I-" Jenna started, but Sirius cut across.
"It was me, Professor. You see, I thought I was brave enough to fight the Giant Squid," he puffed his chest out a little, "so of an evening I challenged him and well, here I am."
"Honestly, Sirius Black. You are going to be the death of me." Professor McGonagall said, shaking her head.
