Chapter Seven

The witch who had led them in hobbled over to a stool where an old, patched and murky hat sat. Jenna, whom had been overcome with curiosity, peeped to the side to see a man with a flowing silver beard sitting in the royal chair.

"Black, Sirius," Professor McGonagall announced, and a confident boy with long black hair sat down on the stool. The hat was placed upon him, and it suddenly yelled, "Another Black?!"

Jenna was so surprised she jumped. She then realised people were laughing, so she smiled and tried to act like nothing had happened.

"Hmph, I know... GRYFFINDOR!" The hat finally decided. Sirius Black sighed with relief and hurried off to the Gryffindor table, welcomed by what looked like Prefects. Nearly everyone in the Great Hall was puzzled for a moment, but soon turned their heads to see the next being.

"Jones, Jenna!" The witch then declared, before taking up a seat beside the stool. Jenna's heart was thumping. She slowly made her way up to the stool and sat down on it. She crossed her legs politely and wished that the hat wouldn't yell 'Slytherin'.

"Lots of courage, I see... and a desire to have a soulmate? Hm... GRYFFINDOR!" Jenna took a sigh of relief and ran off to be greeted by her fellow Gryffindors.

As time passed, James Potter and his gang were all in Gryffindor and Snape was in Slytherin. Sirius and Peter were discussing loudly that Hogwarts should have a hot tub in each dormitory. Jenna snorted into her plate at this as Professor McGonagall glared at them both.

Once the excitement had all cooled down, Professor Dumbledore stood up by an owl lectern and spoke: "Welcome to Hogwarts! Enjoy your stay Newcomers, and well, for those who have already joined us, good luck this year! As we remind you each year, the stone circle is out of bounds due to... well, some work." He beamed at all his listeners. "Without further ado, let the feast begin!"

Food of all sorts filled the empty tables immediately. Jenna gaped at all of this, then grinned and began to fill her plate with roast potatoes, roast chicken and carrots. "Excuse me Xavier, but who is that?" Jenna asked the Prefect she was sitting next to, pointing at a ghost with a ruff on.

"That's Sir Nicholas, Ghost of Gryffindor." He'd smile and continue eating. "Hello young 'un!" Sir Nicholas would pop up in front of her like a bullet. She'd drop her cutlery and it would clatter as it hit her plate, making even more people stare. "Hello, everyone! Wait, you're another Black?" Sirius nodded eagerly, curious as to what Sir Nick knew about Hogwarts.

"And Hogwarts also has many secret passageways!" Sir Nicholas would smile. "What, through portraits?" James piped up. The Ghost nodded. "Well, got to go, Headmaster will be announcing bed soon." And he was right.

Jenna had just finished her pudding when Professor Dumbledore stood up. "Well, I think it is time to get some rest." He said, smiling around at everyone.

And with that, everybody stood up and there was a rush to get to the dormitories. Prefects led the Gryffindors up lots of stairs, until they finally reached a painting with a rather fat lady painted upon it. "Lion tails," said the tallest Prefect.

The potrait hole swung open and revealed a cosy room lit up by a blazing fire. "This is the Gryffindor common room, where you-" Jenna couldn't listen, her curiousity had got the better of her and she edged closer to a pile of books on the fireplace.

She was pulled away by one of the girls and back into the long line of excited first years. "You will have to think of what your dormitory looks like every time you wish to enter. This is because there are only five beds in each dormitory and there are other years. Each dorm has a unique marking on the back of their doors," A Prefect explained as we all ambled up the tight staircase to see our dorms.

When all of the Prefects had retreated to their beds, the first years all stayed in the common room, chatting appealingly.

"I wonder what's happening at the stone circle..."

"That dinner was nice!"

'I can't wait to start my lessons.' Jenna thought, her nose in a book. Her family often called her Belle, as she loved books.

There wasn't a single first year who had been able to get into their dormitories. Jenna was one of the first to do so, so the rest of the girls followed.

Whilst trying to get some sleep, they all heard the boys bickering outside, unable to get into their dormitory. The girls all fell into a fit of giggles. Most couldn't fall asleep, Jenna couldn't because she was too excited for the following day. She pondered about the books, quills and ink pots hidden away in her trunk.

The girl that had pulled her away from the fireplace that very same evening was sobbing into her sheets. Jenna felt sorry for her: she was homesick. She slipped out of bed, grabbed an interesting book on creatures and handed it to her, beaming. The girl looked up. Her face was blotched with tear stains. Jenna could recognise her from being Marlene McKinnon.

"T-Thank you." She smiled back, taking the book and the tissues Jenna had taken from her trunk. "Care to go into the common room?"
"Yeah! Let's go!" Jenna grinned and made a reach for her Gobstones.

"Go to sleep you two..." a sleepy voice echoed from the bed by the stairs. The two giggled and headed downstairs.

After what seemed like an hour, the sun was shining through the curtains in the common room.

"Wake up! Jenna!"

"Hm?" She would mutter sleepily, her eyes still closed.

"You're gonna be late for your first lesson!" James was nudging Jenna: she had fallen asleep onto the small round table. Marlene seemed to have awoken too.

"Let's go!" Jenna screeched, panicking that she was late already. She and Marlene took the staircase three steps at a time to pull on their robes and grab their bags.
