Chapter Five - A Pigeon Poops A Bowling Ball On My Nose
"Ow!" I shrieked as searing pain was all I felt on my nose. I couldn't even breathe and had to leave my mouth open just to let air in and out of my lungs.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket, and sure enough, I looked like Rudolph the red nose reindeer. With my glasses on, I was a nerdy one.
A nurse came in with a bottle of water and a bowl of soup. "Good, you're awake!" She had a cheery tone and voice, like what you expect nurses to have. Not those cranky ones on television. She handed me the bottle of water and placed the soup on the desk beside me. I peeked and it was a bird's nest soup. I only got to taste it one time when we went out to eat at a chinese restaurant, and ever since, whenever I hear BIRD'S NEST, I get hungry.
"How long have I passed out?" I asked her as I took the soup and started devouring, I mean eating, them.
She checked her watch. "About an hour," she said. I then wondered what my group was doing. I would've been sad for missing the fun, but then I thought that if they were still doing sports, it would be better for me to not be there. I guess sports will just never be for me.
After I finished my soup, I asked the nurse if I could walk around the camp. She said okay, as long as I watch out for any flying objects that are heading for my face.
My nose was covered with about two band-aids and I suddenly looked worse than nerdy Rudolph. But I couldn't possibly bore myself in that clinic. I had to take the risk of people looking at me and thinking how I looked funny.
After a minute of walking, I reached the wall climbing arena. The green group, the Grean Reapers, was occupying the area.
I watched them, and how their legs and arms were strong enough to pull themselves up the wall. How they were all so coordinated, and balanced, and well-fitted. My arms and legs were never that strong. I could only probably reach the third stone before falling to the foam on the ground.
Then I felt someone beside me. "Celene, what are you... Woah, your nose." Prince's eyes were full of surprise so I guessed that I looked awful than I expected. "What the hell happened to you? Did you play volleyball and got hit on the nose?"
It amazed how Prince could figure out almost anything. "No. A pigeon pooped a bowling ball right to my nose."
"Ha! So you humiliated yourself in playing volleyball again." He was smirking. That evil, sneaky smirk.
Of all the embarrassments I got in sports, freshman year was the worst. I had a crush on Travis Griffin that year, and we happened to be in the same volleyball team in one gym class. I tried my best to impress him, but fate was definitely playing with me. On my serve, it only landed about five feet in front of me. When the ball headed towards me, I ducked. And, when Travis passed the me the ball for the second ball touch, I had my arms open too wide that it landed inside them like a hoop basketball. Everybody laughed at me, including Travis Griffin.
That day, I decided that he was a jerk.
"At least I got a serve right," I defended.
He scoffed. "Yeah at least you only got your nose broken and not your brain."
I looked at the Green Reapers again and ignored his comment. Most of the Green Reapers were done with Wall Climbing. Just about ten campers left. My eyes wandered around them. Most of them were sitting by the benches, wiping their sweat with smiles on their faces. It must feel good to have your body built for sports, and not puffing pillows.
Then, my eyes landed to the left. I felt my heart go wild as a wild boar and wild cat and other wild animals again. It was him. Mr. Stranger. He was a Green Reaper.
Like everybody else, he was wiping the sweat from his forehead, and I watched. How his arms moved as he wiped those sweat away. How his sweat still trickled down his face. How even on a sweaty state, he still looked absolutely perfect.
"What are you looking at?" Prince asked, confused. And so, I told him about Mr. Stranger, about how I felt a million sparks fly around me when I first saw him. "Sounds like love at first sight to me, and Celene? You're the last person I expected to believe in that. You always insisted that it doesn't exist."
I bit my lip. He was right. I was the one who screamed to the world that love at first sight isn't real. But look where it got me to. "I know, I know. I'm more than surprised as you are. But I don't know what happened. He stood out from everybody else. Like there was a magnetic pull. Like that moment was destined for me to see him. Like destiny was doing it for a reason. Like..."
"You like him. I get it." He cut me off, and I didn't even notice that as I was talking, a smile grew on my face.
I looked at him again. Still perfect. "I have to take a picture of him. I need to send it to Jennifer and tell her everything."
As I took out my phone, Prince said, "Aren't you afraid that he'll see you taking a picture? That would make you look weird and with that you'll ruin your shot with him."
I sighed. "You're right." But I did really want a picture of him, not only to send to Jennifer, but also to keep on my phone. Something to look at when I think about how I had my love at first sight.
But I told myself, it wasn't love at first sight. It couldn't be. No matter what Cheska and Prince said, it wasn't love at first sight.
But I still wanted that picture. Then, I got an idea.
I changed the settings on my phone and clicked for the video recorder. I focused my camera on the right side of the arena, clicked record, then slowly moved the camera to the left. When I finally got a good take on Mr. Stranger, I ended the record. I played the video, waited til it landed on him, paused it, and took a screenshot. There. I had a picture of him.
"You are one sneaky stalker, Celene." Prince said. "But I don't think this attraction will last. It is just a simple camp crush, after all."
In my head, I thought, Maybe he's right. This is just temporary. I hope it really is just a simple camp crush.
