The Carnival Of Love

It was a scorching hot summer day; a perfect day for the fair with my two best friends. The clouds impersonated different animals such as bunnies, snakes, and lion mane. I could see the entrance in the distance and the long-queues edged forward slowly. Faint music could be heard from beyond the distance, with a hint of an occasional happy scream suddenly piercing the air.

After we brought our bracelets, the light from the rides and games mesmerized me. Even though I came here every year, I couldn't help but feel like a kid again. My attention was on the delicious scents wafting through the air from the different booths. The music spilled from the stereos and somehow kept playing all my favorite songs.

"I'm so happy to have you guys with me, again." I smiled brightly as I placed both my arms on their shoulders.

"I missed your craziness too, Lana," Meadow joked, poking my nose.

"Who wouldn't miss me?" I teased, nuzzling my face in her neck inhaling her strong cherry blossom scent.

"Declan." they both replied in unison.

"Gee and I thought friends were supposed to always make you happy," I sighed, dramatically.

"Those are fake friends. Real best friends always tell you the truth, even if it may hurt," Meadow responded, slithering her arm past my waist towards Catalina and sharply pinching her.

"Ouch! What the fuck!" Catalina cursed, causing her to jump out of my arm.

"You've been on your phone the entire time. What's the point of hanging out if you're attached to that stupid thing," Meadow scolded, holding her hand out for Cata's phone.

"But Meadow, it's Sebastian, the hot ass boy I met two days before coming back," Catalina pleaded, her lower lip quivering, but Meadow stood stern. "Ugh, just my luck." she slammed her phone against Meadow's palm and crossed her arms like a child.

"Maybe meeting him two days before coming back was your payback for always making fun of my crush on Declan." I poked my tongue out.

"It's mostly Meadow! I just agree." Catalina shrugged.

"Since we are on Declan again... What happened when you both left the room? You didn't come back for like an hour," Meadow asked, her eyebrow raised sternly.

Fudge! I completely forgot I never revealed Declan and I's absurd moment together during Prom. It took about a week for me to process losing my first kiss to Declan then coming to terms with the fact I was in love with him. There wasn't any point hiding it and denying it; that would only make matters worse.

However, Meadow and Catalina left so quickly, I couldn't admit my big secret and I most definitely didn't want to tell them over the phone. But the moment has finally come, and my heart was accelerating so fast.

"Oh... About that... W-,"

"Lana!" A loud, deep voice shouted my name from a distance.

Turning around, I saw Ambrose jogging our way with a large soda in his hand and a gigantic grin plastered on his lips. When he reached us, Ambrose enclosed me into a tight hug, his chest rising as my face was stuffed into it. He's so lovey-dovey with me. Cadian and Jayden strolled towards my girls, hugging them as well.

"I missed you!" Ambrose cooed, tightening his hold and suffocating me.

"How sweet," Meadow scoffed, grabbing my shoulders and breaking Ambrose's grip on me.

Ambrose's face scrunched up. "I missed you too, Chickie."

"Guys, we're wasting so much time let's go on some rides," Catalina whined, gripping Ambrose's hoodie and dragging him towards the first ride she saw -- Bumper Cars.

We took turns partnering up together, though Ambrose tried claiming me on every ride. With the Bumper Cars, I had to suffer sharing my car with Ambrose, although there were enough cars for each of us to have our own. Despite going on rides dozens of times, we still screamed and laughed like it was our last night on earth. During the Cyclone, when we were spiraling in the air, Ambrose interlocked our hands.

Meadow forced us all to enter the haunted house despite knowing how much we feared anything with monsters, especially me. I clung to Ambrose while Meadow laughed at the fake interior meant to scare us. Catalina held onto Meadow, pinching her every time something scared her.

Served her right.

"If I get scared one more time. Imma pee my pants," I complained, hiding behind Ambrose's shoulders, my heart beating frantically.

"Don't worry, Lana, I'll protect you." Ambrose winked, flexing his minutiae bicep only to scream when a fake ghost appeared in front of him. "I'm out!" he yelled, interlocking our arms as we made a run for it.

"You guys are a bunch of babies!" Meadow yelled, scolding.

"Let's ditch them," Ambrose whispered, feeling his warm breath on my ear sent shivers down my back. "What do you want to do?"

Smiling, I screamed, skipping across the lot. "Food!"

We stopped at my favorite food stand-- the Gyros. My mouth watered as the potent scent of cooked lamb flew into my nose alerting my stomach it was time. Ambrose ordered us three Gyros, and two large sodas, which to be fair wasn't enough, but I could always go for seconds. My stomach wailed; it couldn't wait until we found a table, so I bit into the Gyro, staining my lips with the white sauce.

While Ambrose stopped at another food booth, I basically inhaled the rest of my Gyro, leaving me only with tinfoil. Pooey. Ambrose must have read my mind since he brought us three Korean corn dogs and an order of crispy chicken strips with french fries. We probably looked insane with the mountain pile of food in our arms, but I didn't care.

"Thank you for all the food." I smiled, taking a huge bite of the corn dog only to burn my tongue in the process. Opening my mouth, I fanned my tongue, which was sticking out like when dogs are dehydrated.

"It's the least I can do for using your money to buy ice cream." Ambrose gently tapped my head with his. "Look, a free spot, let's go sit."

It took us less than ten minutes to consume everything we brought and were left with satisfied full tummies. It was only eight-thirty; I had to make sure to save room for dessert. Usually, before we leave Meadow, Catalina and I decorate one funnel cake and share it together. By the end, we're all covered in powdered sugar from our mini food fight.

Ambrose burped loudly and smacked his chest. "We should probably play some games until the food goes down," he suggested, cleaning his hands with the napkin.

"Oh, that's a great idea! I had my eyes on a rainbow unicorn since we got here," I answered, licking the crumbles on my plate.

"Perfect! I'll win my girl her precious Unicorn," Ambrose cooed, softly pinching my cheek.

After cleaning our area, we walked over to the garbage can across the table we were sitting on. The light on the Ferris wheel captured my interest and distracted me from where I was going. My heart does the tango as I visualized a scene of Declan and me enjoying a ride on the Ferris Wheel together. This was another one of my dreams which wouldn't come true anytime soon.

When I asked Declan to join us, he claimed he was busy studying, but school hasn't started... So what was he studying? I rather he just admit he doesn't want to go with me; the truth is better than a nice lie.

Suddenly, I bumped into a hard surface, knocking my crumbled garage right out of my hands. My cheek flushed crimson red when I noticed it was someone's chest I slammed into.

"I'm so sorr-," my mouth shut completely when our eyes connected.

What was he doing here?

"I guess, school isn't the only place you daydream," he commented, his chocolate eyes glistening underneath the multicolored lights sending my heart into a frenzy.

"W-w-what are you doing here?" I stammered, my eyes widened as UFO saucers.

"I figured the fair wasn't such a bad idea," he smirked, lowering himself down to pick up the garbage I completely forgot I dropped.

"Oh," was all I managed to force out.

"Lana! My little angel Lana, where are you!" Ambrose shouted, frantically racing around the parking lot like a madman.

"Ambrose!" I yelled, making a tunnel around my mouth with my hands to hopefully elevate my voice.

His panic-filled gaze softened once connecting with mine and happily ran over to my side. Though the second he saw Declan in front of me, his smile crumbled into a frown. "I guess following us to the beach wasn't enough," Ambrose raged, his tone laced with bitterness.

"I wouldn't waste my time following you," Declan countered, his lips curled into a small smooth smirk.

"Great then." Ambrose grinned, darting down at his wrist pretending he had a watch on it. "It's getting late so Lana and I are goin-."

"Declan! Bro, I thought you were going to the bathroom." Nate patted Declan's shoulder, his eyes twinkling the second he noticed my presence. "Oh, fancy seeing you here."

"Is it really? Everyone goes to the fair." I giggled, my eyes crinkling from how huge my smile was.

"Let me rephrase... It fancies seeing you with Declan." he grinned, as he quirked an eyebrow in amusement. "Is Meadow back yet?"

"Yeah, she's somewhere around here," I replied, searching around the lot for my black-haired friend. Maybe if Meadow dyed her hair pink, she would be easier to find in this massive crowd.

"Lana! How dare you leave me alone with these idiots!" Meadow shouted, basically exploding my ear in the process. "Do you know how annoying it is to babysit these boys! I was this close to ripping them apart," Meadow raged, sending a glare at the two boys who kept their gaze locked on the ground.

"I love it when a woman knows how to take charge," Nate commented, his tongue softly gazing at his bottom lip.

Instantly, Meadow turned around, her face shifting from its ivory complexion to a flushed pink one. "N-Nate... How long have you been there? Why didn't you warn me?" Meadow asked, gritting her teeth.

"Why would I warn you? It's just Nate," I whispered.

Meadow rolled her eyes, and Catalina harshly grabbed my shoulder, bringing her lips up to my ear. "Meadow has a small crush on Nate," she whispered, thankfully the music would make it almost impossible for the guys to hear it.

"Since when?" I shouted, my eyes widened in disbelief.

"Are you guys seriously gossiping right now?" Ambrose asked, checking his imagery watch again. "We should enjoy the rides while it's still open."

"He's right," Meadow agreed.

"I have a proposition... Why don't we all separate in pairs? Meadow and me, Catalina and the twins, and Declan and Lana." he smiled, a hint of mischievousness was hidden in his eyes.

"I'm fine with that," Meadow and Catalina answered in unison.

"What about me?" Ambrose asked, pointing at himself.

"Join any group you desire," Nate replied, shrugging his shoulders. "Come on, Meadow the Pirate Ship is calling our names," a massive grin plastered on his lips as his arm was open wide for her's.

"Duh, easy choice," Ambrose singsonged, interlocking our hands together, and I immediately felt guilty. My heart longed to feel Declan's finger laced with mine, but the chances were near nonexistence.

While I was looking down at our hands intertwining, I felt Declan staring at us with narrowed eyes. He must loathe Nate for putting us in the same group together. I'm sure he would want to be anywhere but here with me.

"You guys are buying me a fish," Catalina declared, waving goodbye to me as she jogged over to the game trailers.

Nibbling on my lip, I let the awkward silence sink in before finding the courage to speak. "So what should we do..." I drawed out.

"You pick," Declan stated, staring off into the distance, his lips pursed.

"Should we go win you the Unicorn? Surely, it should help determine which man is better for you," Ambrose provoked, only to receive no response from Declan.

"I do really want that unicorn." I chewed on my bottom lip, nervously.

"Let's go," Declan announced, already going ahead without us. Like natural instinct, I dashed to Declan's side, feeling the weight sinking on my chest if we were too far apart.

Declan and I watched Ambrose failing miserably at the bottle toss game. I managed to knock one of the bottle towers down and lost twenty dollars trying to get the other one down. Every time Ambrose failed, he opened his brown wailing wallet and handed the owner another five-dollar bill. Guilt resided in my chest as I watched the boy struggle to win me some stupid stuffed animal I could live without.

Though I really wanted the Unicorn. I had a name already picked out for her... Hopefully, it's her, gender is still unknown.

"Maybe it's time to give up," I suggested, placing my hand on his shoulder to reassure him.

"No! I gotta win it for you," Ambrose exclaimed, throwing a ball only to completely miss and almost knocking the owner on the head. "Goddammit!" He shouted, pulling out his wallet for more money, but it was vacant.

"Ambrose, I can't keep letting you use all your money for the Unicorn," I sighed, tenderly caressing her back.

"It's fine... I'll just go to the ATM and withdraw fifty bucks," Ambrose declared, marching away, but I held him by his hood.

"Let it go," I begged, fluttering my eyes with a slight poutness on my lips. He could never resist my puppy dog face.

Suddenly, we heard the sound of bottles knocking down behind us and we both craned our necks back to see. Declan had successfully struck each tower in one shot causing the fireworks to explode congratulating him. My mouth was agape in complete, utter shock at how easy this game was for him.

"That one, please." Declan pointed at my Unicorn. The owner handed him the beautiful Unicorn, and Declan strolled over to us. "Here."

"Oh, thank you," I replied, my cheeks burning from this unexpected turn of events.

The entire time Declan seemed so uninterested in the game to only win and give me this wonderful prize. My heart beamed with joy over something so small as receiving my Unicorn. Now our Unicorns could date and live out my dream of being with Declan.

"Motherfucker," Ambrose cursed, kicking the booth out of rage.

"What's next?" Declan asked, his eyes never leaving mine.

"Photo booth!" I smiled, wiggling my eyebrows.

Who doesn't love a good carnival chapter ;)?! Gosh it's like every time Ambrose and Lana have some alone time Declan somehow finds his way in the middle of them!
