CHAPTER ONE
"OWWW!!" Clay whines, landing right on his back. He frowned at Kestrel. "That HURT!"
"Cry me a river," Kestrel rolls her eyes. "You'll be fine. Fire clearly doesn't hurt you."
"Mom," Peril says from were her and Tsunami were looking at a map, frowning. "Don't be so mean to Clay!"
Kestrel huffed.
Ba-dump! Clay's heart went as he smiled at her.
She's so great . . . her eyes her scales her hugs her warmth her personality HER-
"Three moons, STOP!" Starflight groans from a spot where he was reading from a scroll. "Your happy thoughts about Peril are gonna give me a headache. It's cute and all but GOODNESS."
"Sorry," Clay says.
"Oh, also, Tsunami," Starflight says, "that wasn't funny."
"What'd I do?" Tsunami asks, but Clay could tell she was holding back giggles.
"You know what I mean. Sometimes I wish I could stuff all your heads somewhere where I can't hear them." Starflight muttered the last part, returning to his scroll.
"Wait what did she think?" Peril asked.
"You don't wanna kn-"
"I thought it must suck to hear all our heads. You know, EVERYTHING we're thinking. For example: your internal gushing about Clay all. The. Time."
"Huh?" Peril says, suddenly looking embarrassed. "I don't-"
"Yes you do." Starflight says, rubbing his temples.
"If it helps my brain gushes over you a lot, too, Peril." Clay says, and Peril looked at him like she was about to melt with happiness.
"OKAY, enough mushy-gushy talk." Kestrel says.
Starflight quirks a brow at her.
"Don't you dare, NightWing!" She hisses.
Starflight laughs. "Does Dune know you think the way his tail twitches when he's happy is cute?"
"And we are DONE." Kestrel flairs her wings, clearly embarrassed.
Peril was giggling as Tsunami rolled her eyes, clearly thinking they were all silly.
"GUYS," another voice called from another part of the cave. "Where's the leftover cow from yesterday??"
"Clay had it for breakfast!" Starflight yells.
"Awe man," Sky was frowning as he entered the part of the cave they were in, holding a falcon.
"Sorry Sky," Clay says.
"It's okay. I found a falcon anyways." He cheerfully plops down across from Peril, starting to eat the bird.
Clay walked over and sat next to Peril, who nuzzled his cheek affectionately.
Clay sighed. He loved those around him, Peril, with her burning passion of trying to be the best she could be, which, to Clay, was all the time. Whether she was in a bad mood and yelling at everybody, or she was sitting with Clay being her usual sweet self; like right now, for instance.
And Sunny, with her enthusiastic perspective of the world, she was so empathetic, so sweet. She would always think about what others were saying or maybe thinking, their opinions, always trying to see their side of the story.
And Glory, she was probably about eighty-percent sarcasm, ten-percent grumpiness and ten-percent genuine care for the others. She barely shows emotion, but when she does, it was usually very . . . unemotional. Like she was trying to hold it back but was only letting a little bit filter through.
And there was also Starflight, who could read minds and see the future!! Clay thought that was cool, though, as Starflight said, the young NighWing has a harder time with the future part. He never delved into it, which Clay was okay with. Though, he did wonder about it sometimes, his thoughts spiralling on and on about the topic. Then he'd wonder if Starflight could hear him and he was giving him a headache and he'd send a silent apology to the NightWing's brain.
And of course Tsunami. She was very impulsive, seemed to enjoy violence, and obviously hated Kestrel. Clay was okay with Kestrel, she could be harsh at times, but Peril or Sky would usually calm her down, then things would be okay again!! But Tsunami would pace around whatever room the seven dragons were in, ranting and raging about Sky and Peril's mother's fighting techniques.
And Sky, he was sweet, he had this hobby of finding snails and putting them in jars to study. Clay thought it was a little weird, but he also found it sorta cool. In its own way.
Webs wasn't too bad, he could be a little depressed, but usually his mate Hvitur would make him feel better. Clay didn't know why he was sad, once, he asked Starflight if he ever heard it in his thoughts, but the black dragon just frowned and said it was really sad and would only make Clay feel depressed.
So, Clay had decided to let Webs be Webs.
Hvitur was super cool though, he always had cool stories to tell the dragonets when they were young. He would always bring back souvenirs from the outside, which would be how Clay got cow jerky on his and the other dragonets' third hatching day.
Dune was also really cool. He was kinda like a dad to the whole group, especially Sky and Peril. Everyone figured that he favored them because they were Kestrel's dragonets, but Clay was fine with that.
One particular day, the whole group of seven were passing around a mango, each taking a bite before handing it to the next dragon. Then it eventually got to Peril, and she ate the rest of it while it was cooked in her fiery claws.
Then Starflight spoke. "Webs is looking for us. We're in the history cave!!"
Webs's head appeared in the cave entrance. "Hello, it's time for your history lesson."
