Don't You Remember
You were always a man of few words
So I listened to you on the day I left home.
"Don't let them break your heart,"
You said.
I laughed at the absurdity of it.
"I'll be fine, Dad. Just fine."
We hugged before I drove away.
~
I'd always thought that your heart grew cold
Just after mom died about ten years ago.
I remember being about thirteen
And thinking: This is okay.
It's just your way.
I never expected much in terms of love
Not from you, not from a man made of stone.
So, these parting words lingered around in my head
As I drove down the empty highway.
~
What does a man with a closed heart know about love?
How can you wish for me a lonely and protected life?
What were you afraid of?
Isn't it time for me to walk my path?
Isn't it time for me to feel everything that I can feel?
~
I picked up my phone
And dialed his number.
He's just a boy,
Cute and sweet.
We met at the coffee shop
Down the street.
He didn't answered.
~
"Hey, I want to see you.
I want to feel you touch my skin.
I want to be swept away.
I want to be loved like nothing else matters.
I don't care how young we are
Or how much it'll hurt when it all fades away."
These are the words I wanted to say.
~
You were always a man of few words.
So I listened to you that day.
"Don't let them break your heart."
But that's not the life I want to live.
Don't you remember when you fell in love
Or how you carried mom in your arms on your wedding day?
Don't you remember the way she laughed and the way you both kissed?
Well, I do.
~
The phone chimes and I answer.
It's him.
"Hello. I need to see you again."
