18.1|| A Failed Attempt

Sam watched the eerily white lab buildings, a sudden chill coming over him. They oddly looked like ghosts. He turned away and refocused on strapping on his bulletproof vest. The faster they got this over with, the better.

Three days. Tom had been held prisoner for three whole days. He was probably going mad in there, and Sam couldn't blame him. Unless, Snitch Gravel had killed him already. The mere thought made Sam shudder.

"It's sort of cold," Jerry said all of a sudden. "Should we put on something more than t-shirts?"

"No. It going to get pretty hot eventually, so it's better this way," Sam answered, putting his night vision goggles on.

"Right, whatever you say boss," Jerry grumbled. "Are we going already?"

"Yeah, we should." Sam looked to Jim. "Are you sure you want to come in?"

"You need the extra man power, don't you?" Jim said, loading his gun and seeming strangely familiar with a weapon.

"A miracle, that's what we need," Sam mumbled, looking towards the labs again. He'd handed over leadership for the operation to William. He had more experience than any of them and knew the compound, but Sam still felt uneasy.

"So, this is it, then?" Billy said excitedly. "Our first mission as trained secret agents. Let's go bust Tom out!"

"William, how long will it take us to get there?" Jerry asked.

"About an hour," William answered, checking his watch. "Once there, we must use extreme stealth since you're surely expected. Let's move out or we'll lose the perfect moment."

Sam nodded and they headed out. It was weird to see William moving with so much purpose and confidence, but Sam was grateful they had a seasoned agent with them this time. The only thing that really bothered him was how belligerent William was towards Kyle. They seemed to have some history and Sam was afraid to ask. He'd like as little drama as possible.

Almost an hour later, William suddenly stopped and wheeled around to face them.

"You, motorcycle boy, move the rock!" he ordered.

Sam stared, wondering if William had gone back into crazy mode, when Kyle actually answered.

"How about I move your face and help you admire the other side of your body?" His voice was low and dangerous.

William rubbed the bridge of his nose. "This is the entrance."

Sam turned from William to the boulder. It rested on a rocky mound surrounded by trees, but didn't seem distinct at all. "Well, I guess it is well camouflaged."

"Do tell me how you managed to get inside before, seeing as I have to move the rock aside," Kyle said seeming mildly interested by William's affirmation. Since William didn't answer, Kyle frowned. "We have no time for your games. Tell us how to open it or I'll use you to make a new entrance."

"No need," Jimmy said and reached for a nearby branch. He pulled it down as if trying to break it. It bent over at an odd angle and the boulder rolled aside.

"Stop doing stuff like that. We have no time," Jerry said, striding inside the tunnel, followed by Jim and Billy who stuck his tongue out at William. Jimmy and Kyle threw William murderous looks and rushed after them.

"Stop this," Angie said seriously. "That guy in there, Sam's twin, is my boyfriend and I don't want you not liking Kyle to get in the way of rescuing him."

"You have a boyfriend, squirt?" William asked surprised. "Already?"

"You remember me," Angie said taken aback and Sam had to admit he was just as shocked.

"Of course I remember you. You're Kathy's little friend," William said with a soft smile.

"But then... You remember Kyle, too?" Angie asked confused.

"Yeah, I do," William said with a snarl and went inside the tunnel.

"What's his problem with Kyle?" Sam asked, following Angie inside.

"I'm not sure. Kay's whole family is weird like that." Angie shrugged and she and Sam hurried to catch up with the others.

They walked in silence, their footsteps echoing eerily off the stone walls. They only had a flashlight as a source of light, but it did the trick. The tunnel was low and narrow, allowing only one person to pass at a time.

"How much longer?" Billy asked impatiently once the ground was replaced by rough stone.

"Not much longer," William whispered.

"Great. Where does it come out?" Sam asked.

William stopped in his tracks and Sam walked past him. The look of mild panic on William's face couldn't be good.

"William?" Sam asked worried.

"Be quiet, we're here," William whispered rushing forward with the flashlight and illuminating a thin slab of wood. He stuck his ear to it. "There's someone on the other side."

"Let me," Sam said, pushing William aside and sticking his ear to the wall.

At first, silence greeted him, but it was soon broken by muffled voices. Sam pressed himself firmer on the wall and strained to make out what they were saying.

"Why haven't they come yet?" a man asked, seeming confused.

"Oh, they will come. And I have a bad feeling about it. We'd better get him out of there," another weak voice answered.

"Should I take care of it?"

"I'd rather do this personally, but you can come, too."

Sam listened on, having a bad feeling about the whole situation. It was four in the morning. Why were these two people up, obviously discussing their break in? He could clearly hear two sets of footsteps walking away, and the sound of a closing door. Sam waited for a few more seconds to make sure that no one was left in the room, then pressed his hands against the wall and slid it aside cautiously. As soon as the first sliver of light made its way into the tunnel, he peeked inside the room, but it was empty. He slid the wall away completely and jumped to the floor lightly, followed by the rest of the group. They'd come out from behind a massive mirror.

"I think we're in Snitch Gravel's office," Jerry whispered, looking around.

The room contained a huge desk and chairs, a couch, a large control panel and screens covering one of the walls. A large window next to the screens showed nothing but the walls of another building. An impeccable black suit lay on the couch.

Sam looked at it intrigued. "I wonder what he's wearing now."

"Probably another suit," Jerry mumbled.

"Stop talking! There's surely a guard outside," William hissed annoyed. "We should get out of here before he comes back."

"Wait just one minute," Jimmy said, crossing the room quickly and stopping in front of the control panel.

He analyzed it for a few seconds, then pressed a button. The screens came to life, showing different places in the compound. Jimmy looked at them briefly then started typing away like crazy, changing the images, as if he'd done this a million times before. Sam wondered if he'd ever worked as a security guard, but now was not the time to ask and the answer was probably yes anyway.

Jimmy stopped suddenly and pointed towards a screen. "There, that has to be the building. It's the only guarded one. Let me see if I can get some footage from inside..." he said and started typing again. "There we go!"

A heavily guarded corridor appeared on the screen. Jimmy continued typing and the image zoomed in, but it didn't go beyond the one door at the end of the corridor.

"I can't get anything from inside. Snitch Gravel put a password on it."

"We should carry freaking laptops with encryption software," Kyle said, going next to Jimmy and looking at the console carefully. "Let me try."

He started typing, looking at the changing images from time to time. All of a sudden, he stopped and looked towards the door. Sam heard it too. Footsteps.

"Out the window, quick!" he said terrified.

He rushed to it, opened the latch and pushed it open. They were on the second floor and couldn't jump. Mad ideas zoomed inside Sam's head, but he could only see one potential way out of this. He took out the round magnet and started pulling the cable out of it.

Jimmy said it could be incredibly strong if set right, so Sam twisted the small dial on its side to maximum power. There were iron fittings inside buildings, that much he knew. And maybe, just maybe, the magnet was powerful enough to pick up on them. Praying that he was right, he pulled his arm back and threw the magnet as hard as he could at the opposite building. It hit the wall and stayed there.

"Come on, let's go," he whispered, connecting the hook at the end of the cable to a slot on his bulletproof vest.

The others followed his example except for Kyle who kept typing at the console. Outside the door, the steps were getting louder.

"Kyle," Sam hissed.

"You guys go ahead, I'll be right out," he said, not taking his eyes away from the screens.

"On three then," William said, not giving Sam a chance to argue. "One, two... three!"

Sam pushed the small button on the hook and the wire immediately started rolling back inside the magnet, yanking him out the window. Air rushed through his hair and as the wall of the opposite building was closing in alarmingly fast, he fought a sudden impulse to throw up. He heard Jerry scream behind him, which was probably the worst thing that could happen, but the approaching wall was more troublesome. Sam stuck out his feet and stopped himself from hitting the building like a sack of potatoes.

As soon as his boots touched the wall, he pressed the button again and started sliding down the building. He reached the ground on shaky legs. He so didn't want to do this again. Jimmy came to him and pushed another button on the hook to release the magnet and caught it before it hit the ground.

"What d'you scream for?" Sam asked, rounding on Jerry.

"I'm so sorry," Jerry panted. "I just didn't expect that. Didn't like it much either."

"Are you kidding? It was freaking awesome!" Billy said, but Sam was no longer listening.

His eyes were glued to the window, looking for any sign of movement. "Come on, Kyle, come on..."

A round, black object zoomed out the window and stuck against the wall of the building. Kyle appeared on the windowsill, jumped and perfectly braked against the wall, to slide down next to them gracefully. It did look incredibly cool, but Sam was sure he'd looked more like a bumbling mess.

"Something's not right," Kyle said, catching his magnet, stashing it away and taking out a pair of infrared binoculars.

"Something other than you acting extremely irresponsible and almost getting captured?" William asked.

"What?" Sam asked, totally ignoring William.

"That guard that came in after you guys jumped out. We actually based our entire battle plan on the fact that Snitch Gravel's guards are pretty much idiots," Kyle said, looking around. When he lowered his binoculars, he seemed truly worried.

"They never let us believe otherwise," Jerry answered.

"They're not, are they?" Sam said, swallowing the knot in his throat.

"Nope. That guard that came in actually checked every possible hiding place and I'm sure he's already informed Snitch Gravel that we might be here," Kyle answered.

"That would classify as very bad," Sam said, trying to fight the panic rising inside him. He had to steel himself and get used to the idea that everything that could go wrong will during this cursed mission.

"Why didn't he find you if he looked everywhere?" Billy asked curiously, looking at Kyle as though he were Batman or something.

"The room had a very high ceiling and I used the magnet to stick to it. Only place he didn't check," Kyle answered neutrally and raised the binoculars again. "Getting inside that building won't be easy. It's the only one connected to the big one we just came out of."

"I don't care!" This was getting increasingly frustrating, and Sam had had it. "We knew it wasn't going to be easy. Let's knock those guards out somehow, get inside and save Tom already!"

"Yeah, I think knocking out is the best solution," Kyle agreed.

"Good then. Let's get on it," Jim mumbled and they all rushed around the corner.
