CHAPTER THREE

"Dean. Nycole." Sam wakes them up, and she looks at him through narrow eyes. He starts turning lights on, and she puts her head under her pillow.

"What are you doing, man?" His brother asks him from his makeshift bed on the floor. "It's the middle of the night."

"We have to go." He says, and Nyx lifts the pillow to look at them.

"What's happening?" She asks, confused.

"We have to go. Right now." Sam says, and the urgency in his voice gets the others to finally start moving.

They all pack up their stuff, and Nyx goes to check out of the motel while the boys put everything in the car. She goes back out and gets into the backseat of the car. Dean starts driving as Sam tells him where to go.

He gets on the phone and starts talking to someone. He had another dream so they're headed somewhere to check out if they have a job to work. It's in Michigan, and that's really all Nycole's pieced together so far.

Dean doesn't think that the license plate that Sam saw will check out, and she agrees with the older boy. Neither one of them believes that there's any way that Sam's having dreams about people dying, and they're all coming true.

"Yeah, I'm here." Sam says into the phone. "Jim Miller. Saginaw, Michigan."

"It checked out?" Nyx mumbles to herself.

"Do you have a street address?" He asks the person that he's been on the phone with.

He writes it down and then looks out the front window as he gets off of the phone. "It checks out." He says. "How far are we?"

"From Saginaw? A couple hours." Dean tells him.

"Drive faster." The younger boy says so his brother presses down on the accelerator.

They eventually pull up outside the house that Sam dreamt about, and there are cops and paramedics all over the place. Someone's in a body bag on a gurney in the garage. The hunters get out of the car and walk up behind the crowd of people outside the house.

"What happened?" Dean asks.

"Suicide." A woman tells him. "I can't believe it."

"Did you know him?"

"Saw him every day at St. Augustine's. He always seems— seemed so normal." She says. "Guess you never know what's going on behind closed doors."

"Guess not." Nyx mutters.

"How did, uh—" Sam starts. "How are they saying it happened?"

"I heard they found him in the garage, locked inside his car with the engine running." The woman tells them, and Dean and Nyx both look at Sam. That's exactly what he told them he saw in his dream.

"Do you know about what time they found him?" Nycole asks her.

"It just happened an hour or two ago." She sighs. "His poor family. I can't even imagine what they're going through.

They all see a woman by the house start crying, and the man standing with her tries to comfort her. Sam turns around and walks away from them.

Dean and Nyx hesitate for a moment before walking over to him. "Sam, we got here as fast as we could." He says as he leans against the Impala.

"Not fast enough." He argues. "This doesn't make any sense, man. Why would I even have these premonitions unless there was a chance I could stop them from happening?"

"I don't know."

He sighs. "So, what do you think killed him?"

"Maybe this guy just killed himself." Nyx says. "Maybe there's nothing supernatural going on here at all."

"I'm telling you, I watched it happen. He was murdered by something." He says. "It trapped him in the garage."

"A spirit, a poltergeist, what?" Dean asks.

"I don't know what it was. I don't know why I'm having these dreams. I don't know what the hell is happening." Sam says as he looks between the two of them, and neither of them knows how to respond. "What?"

"Nothing, man. We're just worried about you." His older brother tells him.

"Don't look at me like that."

"We're not looking at you like anything." He says. "Though I gotta say, you look worse than Nyx."

"Nice." She glares at him.

"Thanks." Sam says sarcastically.

"Come on. Let's just pick this up in the morning, alright?" Dean says as he goes back over to the driver's seat. "We'll check out the house. We'll talk to the family."

"Dean, you saw them. They're devastated. They're not gonna want to talk to us."

"Yeah, you're right." He agrees. "But I think I know who they will talk to."

"Who?" Nyx asks, and he just smiles as he looks over at her. "I don't like that look."

The boys go to the Miller house and pretend to be priests in order to get the family to talk to them, and Nycole stays at the motel. She told them it's because "she doesn't feel like going to hell when she dies". So, she decides to utilize her free time to call Bonnie instead.

"Hey, how's life on the road?" She asks when she answers the phone.

"Oh, you know, never a dull moment with Dumb and Dumber." Nyx tells her, and she chuckles.

"Hey, uh..." Her tone turns more serious as she pauses a moment. "Jeremy told me about what happened in Missouri. How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine now. Just a small scar on my forehead, you can barely even see it."

"So, what's up?"

"Have you read in any of your Grams' old grimoires about people having premonitions?" She asks.

"Like seeing the future?"

"Yeah, sort of. People having dreams that feel real and then end up actually coming true?" Nyx clarifies as she fidgets with her necklace.

"No, not that I can remember. But I can look if you want." Bonnie tells her.

She takes a deep breath. "Yeah, if you don't mind."

"It's no problem." She says. "It'll give me something to do. I love my dad's side of the family, but they are like wet paint that never dries."

"Alright, thanks. Let me know what you find." She says and then they hang up.

The teenager calls Ric next. "Hey, how are you feeling?" He asks.

"Much better, thanks." She says. "Hey, I was hoping I could ask you for a favor."

"Yeah, what's up?"

"Is there any way that you could look through Isobel's old paranormal research?" She asks. "I'm hoping that you might find something on people having premonitions."

"Premonitions?"

"Yeah. Like dreams that come true."

"I can look." He says. "Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, everything's fine. Just let me know what you find, please."

"Yeah, I will." He says, and they end the call.

The boys get back later that night and tell her that they found nothing. Dean sits on the bed that she's laying on and starts cleaning his gun as Sam does some research. She'd offer to help him, but she has no idea what to even look for when it comes to this particular case. The boys don't know what to look for at this point either.

"So, what do you have?" Dean asks.

"A lot of nothing." Sam tells him, and Nyx rolls over to look at him. "Nothing bad has happened in the Miller house since it was built."

"What about the land?"

"No graveyard, battlefields, tribal lands, or any other kind of atrocity on or near the property." He says as he sits down on the other bed.

"Hey, man, I told you. I searched that house up and down. There were no cold spots, no sulfur scent, nada."

"And the family said everything was normal?"

"If there was a demon or poltergeist in there, don't you think somebody would have noticed something?" Dean asks.

"Can spirits attach themselves to people?" Nyx asks. "What if it's not haunting the house, but the family?"

"They can, but I looked at the infrared thermal scanner. There was nothing." He tells her, and her eyebrows furrow as she tries to come up with another idea.

"So, what, you think Jim Miller killed himself, and my dream was just some sort of freakish coincidence?" Sam questions.

"Stranger things have happened." She says. "Especially when it comes to us."

"I'm pretty sure that there's nothing supernatural about that house." His brother tells him.

"Yeah, well... You know, maybe— Maybe it has nothing to do with the house. Maybe it's just a—" Sam grabs his head, and Nyx sits up on the bed. "Maybe it's connected to Jim in some other way."

She moves closer to where Dean's sitting on the bed, and they both look at his brother, who seems to be in pain.

"What's wrong with you?" Dean asks.

"My head." He says as he leans forward.

"Sam?" Nyx gets off the bed at the same time that Dean stands up. They both quickly rush over to where Sam's now on the floor, leaning against the bed.

"What's going on? Talk to me." Dean says as he steadies his brother. Sam starts rocking because his head hurts so much.

the younger boy groans, and he reaches out toward his brother. Nyx puts her hand on his arm, and he grabs her hand.

"Sam, what is it?" She asks, but it's like he's not looking at them anymore.

Dean looks at Nycole, but neither of them has any idea what to do to help him. They don't know what's happening, so they can't know how to help him through it.

"It's happening again." Sam says suddenly. "Something's gonna kill Roger Miller." He tells them.

"Jim's brother?" She asks, and he nods.

The hunters all get up and run out of the room. The three of them quickly get into the Impala, and Sam calls someone to get the address for Roger's place. Nyx looks at him as he gets off the phone.

"I'm scared." Sam says. "These nightmares weren't bad enough, now I'm seeing things when I'm awake? And these visions or whatever, they're getting more intense and painful."

"Come on, man. It'll be alright." Dean says. "You'll be fine."

"What is it about the Miller's? Why am I connected to them? Why am I watching them die?" He asks. "Why the hell is this happening to me?"

Nyx reaches forward and rests her hand on his shoulder, trying to comfort him. "Hey, we'll figure this out." She says, and Dean agrees.

"We face the unexplainable every single day." He says. "This is just another thing."

"No." Sam argues. "Tell the truth. You can't tell me this doesn't freak you out."

Dean's quiet for a second before he speaks up. "This doesn't freak me out." He says, but Nycole can tell that he only said it for Sam's benefit. She understands why Sam is so worried about this though.

They drive up outside the apartment building that Roger lives at, and they see him walking outside. The boys both try to get his attention.

"What are you guys, Missionaries?" Roger questions. "Leave me alone."

"Please!" Sam yells as Roger walks away, and Dean quickly goes to park somewhere.

"Hey, Roger! We're trying to help!" Sam yells as they get out and run after him.

He closes the door to his apartment complex, so now they can't get in. The boys try to get him to listen to them as he walks away from the door.

"Why don't we try the fire escape?" Nyx suggests, and Dean looks at her.

"Good idea." He says, and they run to try and find it.

Dean has to bust into a closed off area for them to get there, and then they start running up the steps as soon as they're in. They hear a thud and all of them immediately look up. Sam stops so Dean and Nyx move past him and keep moving up the fire escape. The pair make it outside his apartment, and she immediately turns away after she sees blood all over the window, and Roger's head in the flowerbed beside the stairs that they're standing on.

"Here. Start wiping down your fingerprints." Dean says. "We don't want the cops to know we were here. Go. Go." He quickly hands her and Sam each a bandana. "I'm gonna take a look inside." He says as he opens a window that leads from the fire escape to the inside of the apartment.

"I'm sorry, Sam." Nyx says, and he looks at her.

"Wipe down the railing on your way back down and then go to the car. You don't have to stay here." He tells her.

"Are you sure?" She asks, and he nods.

"I know stuff like this still bothers you, so go." He says, and she leaves the boys up there.
